MLT - Cortese has an ego problem

I'm pretty sure Crouch wouldn't have stumped up 500k of his own cash to pay the wages if he knew there was a billionaire wanting to buy the club.

Uhm... depends on what he knew or did not know - he stumped up the £500k for exclusivity, something that would not have been necessary had he beleived they were the only game in town. I believe Crouch felt it was the best game in town, and I just wonder how much of that had to do with the creibilty extended to the pinnacle bid by Matty's involvement - many of us thought the same when he became involved - it elevated a rumour to something we placed hope in, only for it to be quite quickly and cruely exposed has having no substance.

To me Crouch was obsessed by being at the reins of SFC, anything that might achieve that was worth a try. Like buying a lot of shares at 65p which was ridiculous and put any one with serious money off because all shares then became that price or damn near it.

I doubt they knew anything about any other bids, if you remember at the time the administrator was running around saying we could be liquidated, that was

Crouch's main motivation for chucking his hard earned in.

The administator definitely didn't mention that one of Europe's richest men were interested in buying the club to us when we were chucking our tenners in the buckets.

I thought this at first, but now I think even this was an NC masterstroke.

By letting MP take the conference himself, the target of ire was not present, combined with the language issue (I actually think MP can speeeeka da Eeenglish better than he let on) meant that his first conference was totally defused of confrontation and aggression.

Therefore I consider it unlikely that NC will show his face tonight either.

Nonsense. It was in front of the media, not the fans. There would have been no "aggression", just hard questions which would have been difficult for Cortese to answer. I think many more people would have at least some respect for him if he stood up in front of the cameras and said "This is our new Manager (sorry, First Team Coach). Yes, Nigel was good for us, but i wanted a change, live with it". Instead he wimped out and the only sensible conclusion one can draw from his no show is that he's spineless, cowardly and scared.

I agree that he wont be there tonight. But that isn't due to any "masterstroke" (please!) more because he's gutless and doesn't want to hear the inevitable chants of how much of a w@nker he is.

I cant blanme the guy for wanting to be at the helm, short of playing up front and scorring the cup final winner, it must be a fans dream to be in charge of teh club you support. I also dont blame him for stumping up the cash, he believed it was necessary and the club needed the cash to keep going for another month. I was just surprized that considering how easy it was for many on here to discover the means behind the bid, that neither Crouch nor Matt, both of whom had credibilty and in Crouch's case serous cash, to lose they seemed not to do that simple DD.

He was taken in by them, cant blame him for that. I remember plenty of people on here were as well. Ultimately he was willing to do something for the club and had the clubs interest at heart, even if he did back the wrong horse. I am truely amazed so called Saints fans are slagging off our greatest ever player and supporting the chairmans treatment of him. It's wierd. Can you imagine the uproar if the glaziers treated Bobby Charlton like it? Yet Saints fans slag him off such is their desperation to back their hero and get a sniff of the champions league. Seriously wierd.

I agree with you that Matt was a genius and our greatest ever player and I for one adored him, but these snidey unsubstantiated comments about Cortese whenever the opportunity presents itself are damaging the club with negative press and serve no purpose.

With his job he holds a great amount of power and like spiderman with great power comes great responsibility

End your feud with Cortese like Punch did and move on 'together as one'

I dont agree with you. Adkins's sacking shocked the footballing world. The journos smelt blood and would have done their best to destroy NC and his new appointment. Him not being there removed the red rag to the journalistic bull, and the small delays in translation took whatever wind was left out of the sails.

Respect for getting a Marvel Superhero in a post :smug:

I just think about missed opportunity - how great and perhaps significantly more interseting and thought provoking it would be if someone in Matts position said something along the lines of:

'Of course this decision comes a shock to all at Southampton - and everyone knows I do not see eye to eye with NC - but I would urge caution before we jump to conclusions and start questionng the sanity of it - whatever I think of him as a person, and whatever strange little petty things have gone on between us, the fact remains he sacked Pards and appointed Nigel against many in footballs better judgemnet and that worked - overall the major strategic decisions have worked out so far, so that in itself means I have to grudgingly acknowledge that this could be a good one as well. We all know football has no room for sentiment anymore and even though on a personal level this is not good day for Nigel, nor does it present the club as caring and 'ethical', if I can use that word, we need to take time to assess this in the larger context of the ambition NC has for teh club. We may not agree with it, we may think its the wrong way, but I for one, want to see and understand a boit more about what is behind it before I jump to conclusions...'

I suspect that as his opinion 'should carry more weight' than the likes of us, this would have a huge influence on the media, fans and perception of the club - not agreeing with NC, not hiding his obvious dislike, but seperating out the imporatnt stuff from the BS and emotional rhetoric - emotional rhetoric that has little substance or value apart form appealing to fans.

What's weird about it?

Are ex players allowed to go round saying what they want without forum members commenting on it?

How good a player do you need to be for your views to be unchangeable. What about Terry Paine, was he good enough or are we allowed to challenge his views.

Do we have to agree with great players, simply because they were good at kicking a football around.Remember we are not talking about playing football for a club, but running a club. If Paul McCartney paints a shiete picture, do critics say he's a great songwriter therefore we cant slag his painting off.

Matt is as qualified to run our football club as Nicola is qualified to play up front tonight. Therefore if he wants to comment on the running of the club, why is it weird to disagree with what he said on the basis of his playing career.

There is nothing wrong with challenging what Le Tiss says and pointing out where you feel it may be wrong, but some of the things some on here say about our greatest ever player is ridiculous. Turkish is right, you would never get that at any other club.

These are some tweets from Punch from last January, everyone slated him at the time but do we now think there may have been more to it? For example, a chairman getting too involved in team selection?

wasn't there a follow on to this where he met NC and now JP actually praised him? Forget not it was NA's 2 who fell out with him, not NC

all NC did is refused to sell him at less than his value thus creating a limbo situation. Not wanted by NA not going anywhere else for nowt. Well that's how I saw it I think.

First up Bobby Charlton is on the MU board and had been long before the Glaziers came in - and to my knowledge he has not slagged the Glaziers in public, whatever his personal thoughts may be. In additional Matt took a media role not associated with club so he has a platform to express his opinion, and as such he is also judged in that MEDIA role as to whether his public comments are based on personnal or professional opinion, both or sour grapes - as we tend to do with most journos and pundits who express a view - and we have the right to reply and disagree - so a slightly different scenario to BC at Manchester.

See above, I am more than happy to applaud Matt for doing something, anything when he thought it would help - but still feel he was naive in not at least trying to find out what he was heading up. Especially as Crouch then agreed to stump up and lose £500k...

... this has NOTHING to do with your asseertation 'such is their desperation to back their hero and get a sniff of the champions league' which is BS anyway, and completely irrelevent to discussing whether Matt is overstepping the mark as a media figure - he is not being criticised as a footballer or a 'saints hero' but as a media pundit.

Err, i think the hypoetical point was can you imagine the uproar IF Man U treated Bobby Charlton that way. Do you think their fans would stand for it?

Seriously, Saints fans are wierd.

Their greatest player is critical of the chairman and he is slagged off as being disruptive

Their greatest manager is critical of the chairman and he is slagged off as being disruptive

A life long fan who has been going to games for 40 years is banned for writing a midly critical article on the webiste he runs. Saints fans support the chairman and add their own criticism of the fan who was banned rather than supporting him.

Any remotely or negative media article is dismissed as bullsh it and lies, whilst any postive one is greated with joyous celebration

Can anyone see a pattern here? Wierd, brainwashed internet people who cant accept anything said against the man they worship for fear that it might upset their champions league dreams. Proper wierdos.

Seriously, Saints fans are wierd.

Their greatest player is critical of the chairman and he is slagged off as being disruptive - only after he began using his media persona as a vehicle for this - he is being judged as any other media pundit - not as an ex player

Any remotely or negative media article is dismissed as bullsh it and lies, whilst any postive one is greated with joyous celebration - Rubbish - you may not get it, not sure why, but you seem to have moved on as subtly as possible from 'ALL negative RUMOUR and SPECULATION to all PUBLISHED media' - I made the point yesterday about this , you did not get it then but to repeat, NEGATIVE stuff has GREATER consequences and as such demands greater due diligence - Positve stuff may be BS just as often as the negative - it may even be more BS, but has NO consquences/impact so you simply dont need to spend time analysing it - you either lap it up or ignore with no harm done

Can anyone see a pattern here? Wierd, brainwashed internet people who cant accept anything said against the man they worship for fear that it might upset their champions league dreams. Proper wierdos.

I disagree. I met him, his wife (wow by the way) and his son and he was both engaging and charming. We spoke for nearly an hour and he was interested in my business and set up a meeting at the club on the strength of that one conversation.

Cortese makes tough business decisions for the good of the business which he lives and dies by. He hasn't got too much wrong other than an inability to communicate to people who buy his product who constantly whinge about everything and every time he tries to make it better they whinge more. When it does get better they find something else to whinge about.

He hasnt raided peoples pension pots or used slave labour or not paid tax or gone bust without paying creditors.

Hello spanners on the internet.

Listen up. Matthew Le Tissier will be commenting about matters ascertaining to Southampton Football Club for some time yet.

How about at least once a month, every month, for the next thirty years.

Now you strange people can hop from foot to foot getting jolly upset about it, grizzle that your opinion is just as jolly well important, whine about how unqualified he is. You can all do that for the next thirty years. Fill yer boots.

And you can even squinney and shreik that Matt Le Tissier might say something that might upset the faceless bloke in a suit who haopens to run the club at present.

And why not - because thats why we all love football isn't it? To get behind chief executives. We've all got our favourite chief executives, haven't we? They are what make football simply magical. So sure, if Matt puts that at wonderful thing at risk, you people stand up for what you believe in. Grizzle your little hearts out.

The rest of us will be still here. Looking on at you. Pointing, and laughing. Pointing and laughing.

The rest of us will be still here. Looking on at you. Pointing, and laughing. Pointing and laughing.

I will do you the honour of sifting through the shiedt and responding to what is a valid and reaonable point - You are right, football should not be about supporting chief execs - we make heros of great players and managers - fair point and that is as it should be - BUT Matty has moved on from just being an ex hero player, he has a MEDIA role and as such has different responsibilities - and therefore should not be immune to being criticised for what he says in that media role - as we do all the time with the pundits and media 'personalities' - sorry but cant see why taht should comes as such as 'shocking surprise'.

The second point is that of the CEO - a role that as you state should not be on most fans agendas/radar. Point is, its impossible for it not to be in football where so much of the clubs on the field fortunes are now linked with the commercial viabilty of the business and its growth stragey (no matter how unrealistic you consider it to be) - it should not be beyond your comprehension that as such many see such things as important and want to understand the rational behind it - and support it if they chose to, either by seeing the logic in it or at the very least recognising that its different to the persistent lack of real ambition shown in the past - the 'budget for 17th' mentality which was so often criticised under Lowe's tenure.

I have feck all idea how thsi will work out, whether MP is the right man or whether thsi will turn out to be a step too far by NC. But I am glad that we are NOT accepting of 17th as success - that we will at least try and follow a plan for better things, no matter how difficult that may be - that is afterall a fundemental of sport - the day we accept 17th as success year on year is the day it becomes dull and pointless - when any joy you have in supporting a club dwindles - its not failure, poor form or bad results that kills fans love for the game, but the idea of giving up on anything ever being better or seeing your club not even bother to try - The fact there are fans out there that are prepared to accept that for their clubs, believing prem status is enough, I dont laught at them, I find it sad that they have accepted their station - thats not what being a fan should be about surely?

I admire him as a player (hence my username) but Le Tiss claims Cortese has ego problem, yet continues weekly one-way slanging match via TV & papers.

the problem would seem to be that NC is sitting in his (MLT) chair. MLT never came across to me as the brightest bulb in the chandelier and his constant sniping just makes me think I wasn't wrong.

I see the other old fool who should know better is expressing his doubts about our new manager's credentials in the papers as well.

He uses every opportunity he can on Soccer Saturday to slag Cortese off. A I said, it is a one-way slagging match that Le Tissier has maintained in public on various media outlets for a very long time.

So changing the name of the MLT suite and blocking his season ticket was totally one way, yes?

I know people that have been obnoxious in restaurants or bars before and been banned from some establishments for drunkenness but that doesnt make them not nice human beings.

There are celebrities that people say 'oh he's such a miserable git in real life' when all the celeb wants is for people to p*ss off and leave them alone.

I've given you an example, one of a few, not sure what more you are asking for. I could name the place and time (s) it happened but I chose not to on a public forum. Although I doubt it would matter in your eyes as you've already defended his actions by saying its okay for people to acts like Helmets and get themselves banned from places. So if that's your standard the anything seems to be excusable in your eyes.

Ok, lets say you were the Saints chairman and I was a Saints legend. As we all know you don't like me, if I was on Sky's "Soccer Saturday" every weekend slagging you off, would you honestly leave the "Matthew Le God lounge" titled as it is? I find that hard to believe.

Technically I don't think anyone can use someone else's season ticket, the club aren't actually doing anything wrong not allowing into the stadium someone using Le Tissier's if it isn't him. What they are doing is enforcing the rules for him and not others, but given the one-way public slanging match Le Tissier is having with Cortese I don't blame him for not doing Le Tissier and his mates any favours.

Micky is at the top, then Shearer, then Wright, then Paine etc you know blokes who made something of their careers, captained their country instead of just being a big fish in a small pond forever. In fact I'd even rate Chris Nicholl above MLT

Slight problem with this. You are falling into the classic distort the probabilty/sats to prove a point - mostly used by those the 'spiritualist' game or teh spoon bending watch restarters - I worry about you.

How many restaurant meals do you think NC has had in his life - how many restaurants has he been in? Yet you take ONE example, and ONE side of the story and use it as conclusive proof he is not nice .... I could point out that the 99.99% of times he has no doubt eaten in a fine restaurant, had a great night, tipped well and been courteous to all as proof that he is... but I wont as that would not be Proof he was - merely that on 99% of the time he behaves in a certain way in public. Suggest you go back to the drawing board and wipe this FAIL example from the armoury.
