Terry Paine Club President

Interesting that in all the pro Adkins articles in the Sports Echo, the only support given to the decision to change the team management comes from Terry Paine, the newly installed Club President.

Of course all media comments have to be taken with a pinch of salt but, if reported correctly, it unfortunately follows a pattern that Terry has followed most of his life.

A great player for the Saints but not well liked by his teammates, as David Bull's book 'A Constant Paine' will testify.

Unfortunately he had an unfortunate reputation of toadying around Ted Bates and it seems 40 or so years on, he is one of the very few relics of the Saints past who is able to have a rapport with Mr Cortese but I guess that is relatively easy when you live in South Africa!!

A tad unfair on Terry. Whilst many of his colleagues were not best mates with him, they all respected his ability. Some were also jealous at his relationship with Ted. Terry himself admits today that he was a bit ruthless in his youth but that got him where it did. As for his relationship with NC - well Terry is smart, maybe he will be the one that NC one day listens to, he certainly respects him as shown by making him President. I think once TP has his feet under the table he will in his own way seek to have some positive influence.

"I can only say I support the Chairman's decision..." are his exact words.

Take that whichever way you like - yes Adkins should have been sacked or I dont agree with it but I am only allowed to say I support it otherwise my nice bright shiny new Club Presiedent title will go tits up !

NC meet with all players and staff and insisted that all messages about structure changes are positive.......

Expect all twitter, media, facebook ect to be positive while staff toe the party line

Terry Paine always just toes the party line.

Why is expecting employees to toe the party line so surprising. It happens in everyday life all the time.

TOE the line.

Le tiss and channon both summed it up for me. Both better players than Paine for me.

Well they were not better players I can assure you

Terry Paine was a great player not a great bloke though unlike Channon and MLT

Absolute rubbish. The other two are much nicer. Tiss played his whole career at too flight.

FF

I dont think any one dobted Painey's ability.

He was a class act, behind MLT and Channon in my opinion but nevertheless one of the best ever Saints players.

It was interesting that Lawrie Mac got rid of him as soon as possible when he took over but it was fairly simple decision as Terry was past his best by then of course

Terry is smart and so is Cortese in his own way.

By choosing Terry as Club President he could pander, to some extent to the club's history (which otherwise is an irrelevance to him) whilst having a pliable and remotely located person in the post.

btw there are always anecdotes about past players.

The one I liked, as told to me at Ken Jones funeral last week (an emotional yet humourous event) was Terry Paine taking the mickey out of a rather inebriated Brian O'Neill who had rather a lot to drink on a close season tour and messed his trousers.

Painey was relentless in his joy at Brian O'Neills misfortune

Unbeknown to Terry, Brian had 'borrowed' Paine's expensive Tonic trousers so the tables were turned and Terry became the butt of everyone's jokes especially once O'Neill had sobered up!!

and suffered from a weak bladder

Could it be that Paine supports the NA decision because he's one of the very few people who, through his interactions with Cortese, knows exactly why it was made?

Whether he's the toadying kind or not, I suspect that he has an advantage that none of us, and nobody in the media, has: inside knowledge.

Would have been difficult for Painer to play his whole career at top flight for us wouldn't it, given we were in 2nd tier at the time he started. Played a hell of a lot more games than Le Tiss did though. Actually played 75% as many games as Le Tiss did in the top flight and then played another 400 approx on top of that. Kept himslef in better shape than Le God and was arguably as good in his day. Was always a bit of a knob though, so maybe that's one thing they have in common.

Roger, serious question: How old are you?

Your strident posts on this thread suggest that you saw Paine play, which would make you 50+. But your posting style, complete with needless insults aimed at people who don't share your opinion on your heroes, suggests that you're about twelve.

So what is it?

Someone old enough to appreciate how good le tiss was. Calling le tiss a knob is an insult.

I get their books and pictures on garage wall etc..Idolised them all..

My Missus says i have the age group of a 12 year old...

I know from my limited experience that Roger must be even younger:D

We are all big kidz at heart when it comes to the mighty Saints:)

Still think Terry Paine was the better allround footballer winger striker midfield general although MLT was more skillful not sure where the club would be without them Terry for getting us to Div 1 MLT for keeping us there

Martin Chivers does not get the kudos on this Forum that he deserves very strong great ball control 96 goals in 175 appearances

Channon was very good lots of pace but missed that penalty Boxing day v Arsenal 1973 (I dont bear grudges but met Bob wilson recently who made the save and he said it was all down to Alan Ball one of the most successful players ever to play for SFC who told Bob what to do) that led to our downfall flat mates were fed up with me chanting Channon for England in the early 1970s

Great players great times when money was not as important as it is today and Saints supporters were pleasant to each other and not rude like they are today

Terry Paine , MLT and Mick Channon...3 totally different players .

All great in their different ways..

Find it hard to understand how you can differentiate who was the best.....

All great assets to the Saints over the years..

Opinions lol..

Loved all three of those Saints superstars...

You can add Kevin Keegan, Peter Shilton, Ron Davies, Ivan Golac, Marian Pahars, Rickie Lambert et al to the list

As the man with the wooden leg said ...'It's all a matter of a pinion'......

Great days and fond memories...

Always liked Martin Chivers and spoken to him a few times in recent years about the Saints and Spurs.....

Went to South Africa on holiday this summer and caught Terry Paine on telly as a fooyball pundit.

Taking about England he referred to "the 2 ex Southampton players Walcott and Oxlade Chamberlain." Most pundits would have talked about the 2 Arsenal players - not the "2 ex Southampton players".

Top bloke.
