No point in any protests

The original poster (FF, Duncan) makes good points, but I do take the subsequent argument that we are stakeholders as customers as fair.

I'm as pee'd as everyone (well, the 95%) who were against the sacking. I do think we should confine our protests to before and after the game, not during the match, though. Look at how that hostile environment affects the Chelsea players at home, and we don't want to go down that path.

I would have liked Cortese to have made a statement thanking Adkins for what he has achieved and for Adkins to speak for us for the last time. I don't have closure at this time. Not that that is a major issue, but these things should be seen to have been handled properly.

Yes you are right.Ironically you started a thread in the Lounge that has watched our near neighbours suffer the excesses of serial private owners and the consequences of their gross mismanagement. In any business it is imporatnt that there are checks and balances. There is none with a dictatator at the helm. History tells us that Dictators invariably become totally paranoid because they are unable to listen.

Us fans are in a marriage with no divorce but that should not prevent us venting our frustration as "customers". Even if the Dictator will not listen we all have the right to vent our disgust at the way Adkins was treated.

Very well summed up.

Although I was as disappointed as the next fan to see NA leave I see no point whatsoever in protesting. NC knows 95% of the fan base is hacked off, but he is doing what he thinks is the right thing for SFC. As he represents the owners he is entitled to do exactly as he pleases and there is nothing you or I can do to stop him. When we were rescued by the Liebherr family in 2009 I was roundly criticised when I pointed out we had forfeited all our rights as supporters. Private ownership is just that and if they paid £12m to own what was once our club then they have every right.

If you spent a lot of money on a house and then the people who used to rent it told you how to decorate it and the bloke round the corner who used to be the gardener for the previous owners started telling you what to plant in the garden you would quickly tell them to "foxtrot oscar".

We all welcomed the Liebherr money without actually realising that although we were being saved we also simultaneously relinquished all control.

Protesting or singing songs for Nigel (excuse the XTC plug) ain't going to make a blind bit of difference and a lack of crowd support might cost us a vital 3 points v Everton that I have a feeling we will now need more than ever, come the end of the season.

Whether we like it or not we have to take Nicola Cortese's decisions on the chin and move on - there is no choice unless you turn your back on the club you love.

Not that we had any control before FF

I am ashamed of the way the football club i've supported and loved for 45 years has conducted its self this week. I don't want to just shrug my shoulders and be a good boy, paying my £600+ every year. I will go Monday, mostly because I'm angry, but I will not give them anymore of my money while that excuse for a man is in charge. Thats my opinion, you're welcome to yours.

Must have a protest, I have been watching Saints over 30 years and fans are short changed by idiots and criminals running football clubs paying themselves huge wages. This is our game and our club.

banner and plenty of abuse to the moron NC. this appointment is going nowhere except relegation. We buy 2 players for £19m and get 1 pub keeper, who sanctioned that? I doubt if it was NA. This small Spanish club bloke has been researching Saints since he got the boot, so that tells you the deal was done a while ago behind NA, the players and the fans back....and some dont want to protest.

Why don't you wait and save your banner and plenty of abuse (so very imaginative, by the way) for when/if we actually get relegated? In the meantime, support your club. Negativity towards the new man and the team will NOT help our cause. Think on.

I want us to get 3 points Monday night. We are in a relegation battle and are potentially five wins and a draw from safety with 16 games to go. Yes Nigel has been treated very badly but protesting won't change events and will only adversely affect the team. Therefore, let's not do a Chelsea! As Matt Le Tissier said on Sky, us fans MUST get fully behind the team.

A thoroughly decent manager sacked and the first that he knew about it was when he read it on Sky Sports News!! Some of you think we should all sit on our ar**s and not upset dear old Nicola. Somehow, if we all keep quiet, everything will be alright and we might just avoid relegation! Get a grip - if you're p***ed off about this whole sorry saga, get to St Marys tomorrow evening and let Cortese know just how you feel. I'm sure the players are expecting it, probably hoping for it in light of the way Nigel has been treated. Yes, NC can do as he pleases but there is no harm in letting him know that you do not agree with this latest episode.

I'm undecided on the subject. I think that if the team are playing badly or losing, then there will be chants for Nigel and against Cortese which will foster a bad atmosphere in the stadium. In the unlikely event that we start giving Everton a thumping, all thoughts of a protest will be long forgotten.

I certainly won't boo the new manager, but I probably won't cheer or applaud his announcement. I'm not planning to join in with chants for NA, either.

I've been saying the same thing since the takeover as well Duncan but some people just don't get it.

Everybody is free to protest their dissatisfaction if they are not happy but it is falling on deaf ears and you are wasting your time, cortese will do what he thinks is right to maximise the value of the club for the liebher family and he won't be fazed or swayed by a few hundred fans singing silly songs, throwing their season tickets on the pitch or posing for an echo photographer whilst putting on an angry face and crossing your arms.

Some have said 'would you kick up a fuss if cortese changed our colours to blue and moved to Belfast etc etc'......well yes I think everybody would but it wouldn't change a thing,if cortese thinks it will make the investment better then he would do it.

It might not be right but this is the price you pay for being owned privately, everybody knew that it would come one day so just learn to live with it......that family friendly, plucky upstart club we used to know (for us fans of a certain age) no longer exists,it died years ago,it's all about the money now.

Your job is to pay your money, watch the game with optional singing/chanting, spend a few quid in the stadium and fook off home.....nothing more nothing less.

Yes that approached has worked at Chelsea. Their home form has been amazing since the protests. Their world class players have gone out and played without fear, they have not been affected by the protests. If I say it enough times I might brain-wash myself into believing it.

Yes Delmary - the Chelsea fans do it every game because they are so unhappy with the dismissal of Di Matteo and the appointment of Benitez. Crikey, they are almost telling Abramovich that they do not like his decision making - something they've been scared to do in the past. Fair play to Chelsea fans - they are standing (or sitting) for what they believe in. I do not agree with the way Cortese has treated NA and am happy to let him know it. If you want to sit on your backside and pretend all is well, give NC the nod of approval, then fine, but I don't.

Did I see you in the Echo ripping up a season ticket over the parking charges, or was that someone else?

I support the right to protest but my issue is that the mob take over and it rolls into the next game, and the next game, and the next game.... The Lowe era shows this club does 'toxic atmosphere' very well and I worry what that means for this season.

Everyone wants success, and none more so tha Cortese. Unlike the fans though, Cortese's time horizon for achieving success is much shorter (I doubt he will still be here in 5 years) and because of that he sees replacing Nigel as needed. Your average fan would be satisfied by the success that NA was delivering, but Cortese wanted more. Time will tell if that is greedy or inspired.

I suspect that Cortese needed but a few of his player negotiations to break down because of "Nigel who? I want to play for a bigger name", before he decided NA wasn't the man for the next phase.

I support Saints, whatever, whenever.

Too short notice now, but for Wigan away how about somebody getting thousands of those Prince Charles/Prince Phillp type cardboard face masks made up and distrubuted to the away fans.

I know this may ruin things for the Face Paint and Jester Hat brigade but you can still take the Foam Hands and give NC The Finger!!

Don't want to protest as ultimately this can further damage 'our' club.

That said, I liked and respected Nigel and would welcome the opportunity to sing/chant his name to further show that respect

I'm not that willing to just forget what he has done and frankly feel this is the least he deserves.

Singing/Chanting his name should not end up being detrimental to the team performance. Think some people are clouding the issue of showing respect to one of our best ever managers to that of a protest against the club.

Fans didn't forfeit rights when the Leibherrs took over. We never had any rights as is clearly demonstrated by the debacle that preceded the leibherr takeover. Shareholders had rights but what use were they in preventing the shambles of the plc era?

You are probably right that there is no point in protest although I'm not so sure that Benitez won't be removed at Chelsea if the protests at home games continue to affect results. We dont have the luxury of that kind of sustained protest, being 3 points above the zone. Ultimately we can vote with our feet. Potentially that can have a major impact but few will do so because we have no wish to damage the club.

Depends on what you call "worked". It has made it clear to most other fans that large numbers of Utd fans do not agree with what has happened there and would welcome a change

Simple really, if you go by the agenda of 'MUST' it hasn't worked.

Yes, I know the Glazers still own the club, that wasn't my question though.

I appreciate that and I think the protest was agood one in respect that it was highly visual to the media and wasn't negative towards the atmosphere at games. The reality however is that even such a well orchestrated and supported campaign like that of Man Utd has not achieved it's one single goal.

The crowd will be 100% behind the team. Probably also behind the new manager.

A few "one Nigel Adkins" chants are not going to cause any bother at all. In fact I'd welcome them, as they'd confirm to the footballing world that the fans are largely against the decision. Songs like that aren't going to cause us 3 points. And the fanbase will move on; this is just a chance to show some solidarity with a man that did wonders for the club and in effect to thank him for his service.

Agree

Right, so why aren't you posting that to all the posters that are terrified any protest on Monday might affect our team?

That's Jordan Sibley's job not mine! I appreciate the Man Utd 'argument' which has been well quoted did not directly affect the team's performance in a negative way. However, referring back to the OP it did not achieve what it set out to do and that is remove the Glazier family from the helm.

Because our situation is more comparable to Chelsea's. As with Benitez, Cortese's actions are fundamentally intertwined with having a new manager, so attacking one is more likely to spill onto the other. Singing one Nigel Adkins is innocuous enough but you can easily imagine that sliding into more personal abuse against the new manager if he doesn't get a fast start. Either way he's operating on a much shorter leash which is not helpful in the middle of a relegation dogfight.

At united, it's easier to keep protests against the Glaziers and support for the team separate - its not like they've fired fergy or made any other unpopular decisions with clear outlets on the pitch.

to be fair if you read the welcome thread there are many who are out to abuse the new manager. There are many with solid bone from the neck up who think showing their undying love to NA will somehow show the world how wonderful we are.

When AP left we had a load of Madame then as well, had NC not got rid of him where would we be now? Nobody can say of course, only time will tell if NC is right but he is the one who has a massive amount to lose financially.

Right, so we're agreed that support shown for Adkins won't affect the team? And it's not rocket science to be able to divorce criticism for the chairman and still support the manager. Happens all the time in football, when fans are against the person running the club, but support the manager even if he was appointed by the same board. They are two different people. With different names. And different roles. And a different background at the club. If we're rock-bottom in April, then I'd unfortunately expect the new boss to be quite rightly getting some stick.

Agree -and Nigel was fortunate to get off to a fast start which helped snuff out the discontent, though I remember it was quick to resurface around Xmas time 2010 (before we beat Huddersfield at our gaff). The difference is that the new guy doesn't have the luxury of having a championship squad in L1.

Having invested a great deal of money and time the last 2.5 years watching us rise through the leagues i will be mighty p***ed off if the rest of the season goes downhill because some fans want to spend all game protesting. Its what sky and the rest of the media want you to do.

I am as bewildered as everybody else about Adkins and he should still be our manager but he is gone and waving a snotty white rag in the air aint gonna help the team get 3 points.

Players react to the atmosphere in the ground Negative = failure Positive = success

A club without NC and the liebher family may well see us back at Dagenham and Redbridge in a few years. Be careful what you wish for.

Agree that support for Adkins won't have much of an effect but that same support and the motivation behind it could turn into something more hostile and counterproductive very quickly. And no we wouldn't have to be bottom of the league in April for it to happen. We lose on Monday and against United I'm pretty sure the atmosphere against City won't be pretty - regardless how we get on against Wigan.

Would be interested to know of examples where managers can be separated from the chairmen - usually if a manager is brought in by an unpopular chairman, they're seen as willing puppets and accomplices.

I think NC does, the value of the club in the PL to one in the CCC. We may get parachute payments but the club is again a very expensive machine to run. You could also say goodbye to Shaw and Co. it will be a disaster.

I didn't know NC thought that fans have no impact. I have always believed fans mindset has a massive effect on the team.some think not,but any club who has the fans on your back is negative to the team and I'm sure Moyes is delighted to whip the frenzy up,Sky will love it as well.

If we lost tomorrow, then again at United, but beat Wigan, I don't think fans would be up in arms about those results at all. If we lose at Wigan things might start to turn, but I don't expect that to happen.
