Silvercherry Saint Posted 19 January, 2013 Share Posted 19 January, 2013 Some interesting stuff on some of the Espanyol Football forums http://www.fuerzaperica.com (sorry, i'm not that good at doing links). It looks like this was known in spain from at least Wednesday 16th. There were reports/rumors on there that we have a 10Euro bid in with Milan for Coutinho which backs up some earlier reports on our forum.

Silvercherry Saint Posted 19 January, 2013 Author Share Posted 19 January, 2013 Well I didn't realise Jose Fonte's younger brother played for Espanyol!! Yeah, think I noticed that in someone elses post. I'm guessing the "Scouting" that has gone on since November has been through MP and probably our new backroom staff!?! Patrick Bateman Posted 19 January, 2013 Share Posted 19 January, 2013 With our links to Countinho, does it mean this new chap was picking/contacting targets weeks ago? This seems to be the case now - not a bad thing I guess, it's probably opened us up to players we may not have known about before. I think Moyes alluded to that in his interview actually? As long as we do actually get some of them in.

It would seem that Cortese's mind had been made up for a while. It's an underhand way of doing things, but at least Pochettino can hit the ground running. It's an underhand way of doing things, but at least Pochettino can hit the ground running. Its only underhand if Nigel didn't have a clue what was going on. My GUESS is that he knew at the end of last season what Cortese planned to do this season. I GUESS the only thing Adkins didn't know was exactly when the axe would fall. Just me making things up though so take with a pinch of salt...

forever a red and white Posted 19 January, 2013 Share Posted 19 January, 2013 Living in Spain at the moment and spoke to some friends over here. They say even though things ended badly that they like the new manager a lot and said they thought he was really good at Espanyol. Nothing negative to say at all really. MatthewStiles Posted 19 January, 2013 Share Posted 19 January, 2013 The first thread I found there about Pochettino was titled "el espanyol se equivocó destituyendo a mauricio pochettino" in other words Espanyol made a mistake in sacking Mauricio Pochettino. The poster points out that Pochettino took them over when they were near the relegation zone, won 2-1 in Camp Nou and ended 10th etc. The poster emphasises that Pochettino was in charge during tough financial times which meant they had to sell important players but that he created a great team spirit. The reaction on the first page seems to be in agreement or neutral with the neutrals making the point that they have to support the current boss. Later pages are more mixed. In my opinion, he seems pretty good but the timing of this decision to appoint him is extraordinary.

Silvercherry Saint Posted 19 January, 2013 Author Share Posted 19 January, 2013 Hes our manager now and sounds an excellent choice. Lets get behind him. Agreed. It still hurts when I think about whats gone on to such an honorable bloke as Adkins and how it reflects on our club. I guess he will be hansomely paid off with 2.5 years of his contract remaining. It just pains me to know that he will be going to go to another club and do a great job. I hope, as a sweetener we get a really good surprise signing. Lets hope MP has been doing his homework well. If you bother to watch the press conference, saints player interview and clip of the training session today it is obvious he understands quite a bit and speaks some English - perhaps not enough to conduct a full press conference as yet but it will not take long. Elmore Posted 19 January, 2013 Share Posted 19 January, 2013 I was reading up on Pochettino as I know nothing about him. Interestingly this article (Dec 2012) says that Espanyol’s cantera (youth team) was “sorely under-used by Pochettino”. http://elcentrocampista.com/2012/12/mission-impossible-can-javier-aguirre-rejuvenate-post-pochettino-espanyol/ However this article (Jan 2011) says Espanyol had a “flourishing youth policy “ under Pochettino... the last ten paragraphs are worth reading. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2011/jan/17/espanyol-la-liga-sid-lowe

Rather then use their academy he probably tried to get other reinforcements in.

I agree 100% with this, but the way I see it is that once the board decided that Pocchetino match the profile they want in the next manager they didn´t have time to wait until the summer. It was a "now or never-decision" to be made. If they didn´t do it now Pocchetino most certainly would not be available in the summer cause other clubs would have come in for him with a job.... So they made the decision.....right or wrong?? Only time will tell.

St_Tel49 Posted 20 January, 2013 Share Posted 20 January, 2013 With our links to Countinho, does it mean this new chap was picking/contacting targets weeks ago? One of the more plausible reasons given for Pardew's sacking was that NC had discovered he was talking to Newcastle. NC did not approve of such underhand dealings. If true then we have a classic example of double standards - you can't be underhand - I can.
