Perry McMillan, of the Southampton Independent Supporters Association, is the latest person to criticise the sacking of Adkins. McMillan wants the club's fans to wave handkerchiefs at St Mary's on Monday when Everton arrive on the south coast for a Premier League match He told the Daily Echo: "As Spanish supporters wave white hankies as a form of protest it seems an appropriate way to protest at Nicola Cortese's ruthless treatment of Nigel Adkins. "It's important we send out this message and as this match is live on TV and will be seen throughout Europe, it's a great opportunity to show how we feel. "When you think about how hard he (Adkins) worked to get us into the Premier League, this leaves a bitter taste."

John Boy Saint Posted 20 January, 2013 Share Posted 20 January, 2013 I do believe a team in Spain's fans ALL do wave their white Hankies in support of their team, not sure who? So rather than a protest it might be seen as a warm welcome. I think White Chrysanthemums are a bit negative in Italy, so we could look more civilised throwing them on the pitch en mass in protest and at the same time look more cultured than Chelsea and their Leeks!! Ed Rooney Posted 20 January, 2013 Share Posted 20 January, 2013 Anyone who protests during the game is a complete and utter ****.What is the frickin point in making an issue of this. Is it gonna change things ? NO it isnt so all those who feel they need to show there un-happiness, do not flatter yourselves ....it is not important what you feel you need to do, you are not vital to the club unless you are helping drive the players forward with your support. Grow up, football is a business and no manager or player is bigger than the club. Nigel was gonna go eventually as he cannot attract the kind of players the club want to enable regular European football, It is that simple !!!! dubai_phil Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 Speaking to many fans and media guys over the weekend they are ALL in total agreement that the sacking was insane. For the first time in as long as I can remember we (as fans of Saints) appear to have gained some sympathy/empathy/awareness from Football. A number of those fans also said "Christ on a Bike" "FFS" "What the hell is wrong with you lot" about the White Hankie waving. The club & Cortese are currently #laughingstock. In the name of Saints History do NOT turn us fans into #laughing stock tonight Support the team, support the new manager, sing feck off NC but PLEASE if you want to stick a hankie somewhere mail a used one to his office

Nigel=God-Poyet=Sod Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 I won't be waving a hankie but think that if people want to, they have the right to protest. I have no problem with people wanting to show their feelings because they are loyal Southampton supporters. I don't think people on here should mock other people over it. If they want to do it, let them do it, that's why it's a protest.
Fan The Flames Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 Why do something Spanish to protest against an Italian hiring an Argentinian. The white hankie is used in Spain to show disgust to basque teams that appear to support terrorism. I was at Athelico Madrid v Athlectic Bilbao just after there was an Eta attack in Madrid and the hankie and turning their backs on the Bilbao team was very powerful. dronskisaint Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 The white handkerchief (my kids called them hankies!!!) waving has no place at St Mary's because: It's nothing to to with English football culture The protest should not be aimed at the new manager who has done nothing wrong It's a bit (lot) girlie I'll be singing support and thanks to Nigel Adkins incorporated in my support for the team as I have done many times over the last couple of years...tonight it'll be a bit more poignant but my team need my support now as much as any time - if you think I should have said 'our' team then great, you'll be joining in. Cabrone Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 The only way to make a protest that will be felt by the board is to stay away. It's not quick (ST holders obviously can't have an effect this season) and requires a lot of fans to individually do it but it will ram the message home like nothing else. In this age of win at all costs nothing else will work. TBH after this strange decision I'm prepared for relegation anyway so sales would go down automatically. If the new guy pulls it around then fair play to him but with Reading (stable manager - unlike us) and QPR (the much maligned Harry in charge) looking like they are picking up form my money is on bottom 3 now. trousers Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 It's all over the national radio sports bulletins this morning..."Saints fans to wave white hankies...blah...blah" Why don't these media buffoons actually do some research into how many fans are actually planning on doing this rather than perpetuate a headline grabbing non-story based on an interview with one fan? saint_sinner Posted 21 January, 2013 Share Posted 21 January, 2013 the only way a protest would work is if there was someone who would listen like Askham did, like rupert did! The reason why this is pointless is that nobody cares what SISA think anymore and Cortese isnt answerable to anyone. NC believes he's acting in the best interests of a multi-million pound business so why should he give a f*ck what anyone thinks. We are supporters and we want saints to do well. Who's to say that Cortese hasn't got it right again? As for Nigel, thanks for everything, you're a multi-millionaire now made for life with an impeccable CV!! Life is so unfair!!
