Pat from Poole Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 Just seen on SSN that they're up to 14th in La Liga after a win tonight. So maybe they weren't previously the no-hopers that people are saying due to being forced to sell players etc.........
Glasgow_Saint Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 Think we have simply taken the cheap option.

kpturner Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 Why cheap? Anyway, as I said on another post, Espanyol had a similar start to the season as us.....and like us they have now picked up some points. The difference is that MP got sacked during the bad run and NC didn't.

Ziggy Posted 19 January, 2013 Share Posted 19 January, 2013 They were next to bottom when he left. This is great news. Saints have continually improved this season but we have sacked him and replaced him with a sacked manager whose team have improved measurably after he has left. I am so happy. buctootim Posted 19 January, 2013 Share Posted 19 January, 2013 Espanyol in La Liga 2008/09 10th 2009/10 9th (January Pochettino appointed) 2010/11 8th 2011/12 14th 2012/13 Nov - bottom (Pochettino sacked) 2012/13 January - 14th under new manager Yeah he's clearly amazing. So good he doesnt even need to be able to speak to his players.
John Boy Saint Posted 19 January, 2013 Share Posted 19 January, 2013 Yeah he's clearly amazing. So good he doesnt even need to be able to speak to his players. Maybe the fact he speaks Spanish and they speak Catalan being from Barcelona didn't help matters. Better add

Glasgow_Saint Posted 19 January, 2013 Share Posted 19 January, 2013 Same might be said for WGS here to be fair. Yes maybe..... But Steve Wiley didnt come in after WGS and sent us shooting up the league!! If pinocchio was so good the Espanyol fans missed it (from Twitter updates) and his Espanyol replacement is "so much better." His replacement btw was Javier Aguirre who was sacked as Real Zaragoza manager after the club owner quoted that the team has "never done so bad in their club history" Exciting times

buctootim Posted 19 January, 2013 Share Posted 19 January, 2013 Pep to Bayern was called a fantastic appointment - heard his germans fantastic...... Comment totally devoid of any insight or worthwhile thought. Firstly Guardiola has a far better record than Pochettino. Secondly he has got the good sense to not take over until the end of the season, allowing time for little things like learning German.

Thats because he was a popular player there for years. Surprise surprise despite an intial bounce coming back as manager didnt turn out too well. St Jim Posted 19 January, 2013 Share Posted 19 January, 2013 (edited) Espanyol in La Liga 2008/09 10th 2009/10 9th (January Pochettino appointed) 2010/11 8th 2011/12 14th 2012/13 Nov - bottom (Pochettino sacked) 2012/13 January - 14th under new manager Yeah he's clearly amazing. So good he doesnt even need to be able to speak to his players. Slight correction to that - Espanyol's record reads: 2007/08 12th 2008/09 10th (January 2009 Pochettino appointed at which point Espanyol were 3rd from bottom) 2009/10 11th 2010/11 8th 2011/12 14th 2012/13 Nov - bottom (Pochettino sacked) 2012/13 January - 14th under new manager It does appear on the face of it that he took them backwards after a couple of relatively successful seasons but unless we know the ins and outs of the club (i.e. did they sell all their top players, who had Espanyol played up to the point he was sacked - was it a tough start like us?, etc.) there's not a lot in the stats to suggest either way whether he'll be a rousing success and NC was justified in his actions or that he'll be a complete failure. One thing for sure is that regardless of what we think about the decision, we all need to pull together and get behind the new manager and the team otherwise it could have a serious detrimental affect Edited 19 January, 2013 by St Jim

um pahars Posted 19 January, 2013 Share Posted 19 January, 2013 I really don't think you can judge a manager just by looking at league placings. There are so many unknowns. And as for Spanish football being poor standard, i can remember the first game at SMS when Espanyol embarrassed us in the first 45 mins!!! Jury's out on whether this guy can deliver, there look to be positives and negatives regarding his experience, but I'm happy to give him a chance (doesn't mean I'm happy with the decision to sack NA though!!). Yep pretty much this. I'm not saying this bloke necessarily will be bad and I'm certainly not judging him on his mixed results at espanyol as it is what he is like here that matters.
