pangy Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 I think the problem is Cortese has big ambitions for the club and there is nothing wrong with that, but he wants to much too soon, maybe NA is just not high profile enough to be able to draw the quality of player's NC wants,we see the cost of young English players are stupid and you can get some gems abroad (Michu) would a more high profile European coach offer us a bigger chance of attracting a better quality of player?? There has to be some reason behind it as on paper this new guy just seems to be a La Liga version of Adkins?
S-Clarke Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 Cortese wants sexy now that we're in the PL, and Adkins was just not sexy enough for him and he didn't feel he was ''sexy'' enough to attract the players he wanted. That's what I think anyway, incredibly harsh.
Turkish Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 it was said back in the summer that Cortese wanted someone higher profile as he didn't feel Adkins had the standing in the game to attract the players he wanted. this was dismissed as bullsh*t and trolling of course. Viking Saint Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 quite possibly....for right or wrong reasons, the sack-faced old crook at QPR has a high-profile and is able to draw players in....then again, Ramirez still came here.....
Kingsland Red Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 With reference to the original query, NA has been replaced in the same way as the programme sellers.
This Charming Man Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 But this guy isn't even high profile. The most famous thing he's ever done in his entire career is foul Owen.

alpine_saint Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 Its a good question, actually. Could it be that NC is exasperated with transfers falling through, and thinks it might have something to do with NA not being high profile enough ? A real pity if thats the case. There seems to be enough testimonial around that hes a good coach.
chocco boxo Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 He was sacked because NC is reminding us mere mortals he can do what he wants. Not starting with Lambert at Chelsea was seen as a sign of madness by NC. (IMO)

Do we get pretty girls in tailored suits to pick the team now then? I'm coming round to this.

PinkScarf Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 No - the girls think he may not have been able to attract Top Quality Players and therefore Saints were caught in a vicious circle of not being able to progress whatever money they spent. Nigel was and is a very popular Manager but when we went the other night to the game - the crowd were screaming for Rickie and then Gaston to come on - if it had been left to Nigel only ... would the Team have clawed it back to 2-2. Dunno.

Turkish Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 He won La Liga manager of the year in 2011, beating Mourinho and Guardiola. so what? It doesn't make him high profile. George Burley won the Premier league manager of the year once beating Ferguson and Wenger.
PinkScarf Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 Also the complete capitulation in the Cups put the pressure back on him as well as not winning regularly at Home. May be wrong !!!
Shroppie Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 I do think there could be something in this. The only area where Nigel has struggled is attracting players in the transfer market. But would much rather have seen us bring in a Director of Football with the high profile and let Nigel get on with what he's done so well.

I have said for a while that during the transfer windows we have been aiming well above our lowly newly promoted status, it worked with Ramirez but not many other targets. I didnt put 2+2 together earlier but yeah, it could definately have legs

trousers Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/southampton-sack-nigel-adkins-the-writing-1544510 "In a remarkable club meeting, Southampton executive chairman Nicola Cortese addressed Adkins, the first-team squad and club staff in what they thought was going to be a rallying cry ahead of their return to the top flight. Instead, the Italian banking tycoon told them: “Most of you are not good enough for the Premier League.” And no one doubted that he included his manager in that damning assessment."
