Window Cleaner Posted 29 January, 2013 Share Posted 29 January, 2013 Yeah it seems he must have known he was going before he did. still feel sorry for the bloke, but that's football. it's funny though how this is being used by the desperate as another stick to bash cortese with, whereas if adkins had been sacked and we had no replacement already lined up there would have been outrage from the same usual suspects! I think NA learnt his lesson from the AP situation because let's face it, the "Wilkins era" was a total disaster.

View From The Top Posted 29 January, 2013 Share Posted 29 January, 2013 So, those reports suggesting he knew nothing until the news started breaking on the day were wide of the mark...? Seems slightly odd to get on the phone to Ferguson about it though... I am confident that he knew he was to be replaced but the timing and manner of which it was done caught everyone, including NA, on the hop. Saint86 Posted 29 January, 2013 Share Posted 29 January, 2013 When do you ever see clubs that take a month to appoint a new manager? Quite often to be honest, how long was di mateo an "interim coach" again?
Supersubpuckett Posted 29 January, 2013 Share Posted 29 January, 2013 How about NC told NA he was being replaced a while back but did a deal along the lines of keep doing your best and i will look after you. It does go back to those weird comments he gave after the Cov game which some of us pointed out could mean he was going - and then obviously got roasted by all the wetties on here. Remember also the handshake between them was a bit cold. Anyway, all done now - onwards and upwards, blue lines etc etc
alpine_saint Posted 29 January, 2013 Share Posted 29 January, 2013 Is there anyone still in doubt that NC always intended to replace NA in the middle term, and that NA wasnt aware of it ? I certainly dont beleive the "NA found out in front of the TV" byline going round.. Nah, nor me Alps. Not now, anyway. At the time, I said that if it was true that Nige had been sacked by TV, the club deserved to be condemned. He wasn't sacked by TV if he knew months before, unless NC said "Nige, m'boy - I've changed my mind about the job. You can keep it".

svetigpung Posted 29 January, 2013 Share Posted 29 January, 2013 How long was the Barca trip planned in advance? Must have been weeks i guess? Thinking about it, it was perfect timing for the new guy to get away with his troops. Time for some propper introductuions and a bit of team building. So the Don must have planned the switch well in advance and had to get rid of both Atkins and Adkins before the departure date. Last thing he needed was some extra bonding with the guy getting the boot. Or am i completely wrong and the club booked their trip the day MOPO was announced? Any ideas? Marsdinho Posted 29 January, 2013 Share Posted 29 January, 2013 Think about it. He would never resign. He was a low level player, then manager, then a physio, S****horpe, now us. I bet his contract with us was worth more than he'd earnt is all his years as a physio and manager before that. He resigns, he loses all that and might be viewed as a bit of a quitter when the heat was on. He's left with his contract paid up, a fantastic reputation in tact and the sympathy of the football world. He'll walk into another job at a top championship club. Not Prem? Tokyo-Saint Posted 29 January, 2013 Share Posted 29 January, 2013 None of this can be true as they were friends right up until the last second. Bucks Saint Posted 29 January, 2013 Share Posted 29 January, 2013 Watch Crosby shake NA hand after the Chelsea draw, they knew that was their last match. I was just thinking the opposite. The reaction at 2-2, the reaction at the final whistle (bloody great comeback etc) and his enthusiasm after the match when talking about Luke Shaw. I have watched it a couple of times and if this was acting, it was very high quality. Could have still done the job on the night and been polite, but without the genuine joy surely? The more one learns the more one realises what a dreadful odious man we now have as our chairman.
CanadaSaint Posted 29 January, 2013 Share Posted 29 January, 2013 I don't think Cortese handled it as well as he should have done, but nowhere near as badly as some media folks are suggesting. He's just reaping the dubious rewards of poking sticks in various media eyes a couple of years ago - just what many on here thought would be the result when he did it. westofshannonsaint Posted 29 January, 2013 Share Posted 29 January, 2013 A criticism I had when Pardew was sacked is that it took us too long to bring in our new manager. This thread goes to show that NC will be dammed whatever he does. He might not have handled this situation as well as he could/should have & only time will tell if he made the right decision. I'm happy that the new man was lined up to come in, it's better than 4 - 8 weeks of Les Reed in charge. Perhaps, our recent good form was a result of NA upping his game in an attempt to keep his job, I think he probably knew it was a matter of 'when' rather than 'if' he was going. Yorkshire Saint Posted 30 January, 2013 Share Posted 30 January, 2013 Adkins knew for months and has played a cracking game - together as one, I love this club ....etc etc, it is always the opposite of what you think and I would guess for all the great things Nigel did for us and as honest as he was - he has taken everything he can from this journey - and who wouldn't ! Draw a line - We move forward together as one
dubai_phil Posted 30 January, 2013 Share Posted 30 January, 2013 (edited) NC talked about Plans Timelines Projects. NA had a job - get us to the PL. I'm sure he would have hoped to be given the chance to keep going and in a way NC DID let him have a chance MP came in on 2.5 year contract but I bet IF he gets us to the top 6 next season he'll be gone and replaced by the next level to take us to the CL Great life that - be successful get paid your contract in full and sit on the beach in Dubai / Florida / wherever before taking your pick of the best jobs in the world or tweeting all day long Let's face it, the same has happened to a lot of the players who got us here early. Boris Karloff Posted 30 January, 2013 Share Posted 30 January, 2013 My theory is that Cortese wanted NA to resign and made life almost impossible for him but he still refused. NA may even have threatened him with constructive dismissal. This would explain the lack of thanks and general mess Cortese made of the change. AK Posted 30 January, 2013 Share Posted 30 January, 2013 I dont think NA knew for certain but im sure he was aware a change was likely, just like the majority on here suprised at the timing. Also i have some concern with MP's record, one job which he got sacked from, with the team now playing remakably better since he left, in fact they moved from bottom to 15th, with 13 points from 8 games after he left compared to his 9 points from 13 games he was in charge for this season. Hopefully we havent replaced NA with The Argentinian version of Mark Hughes.
Dangermouth Posted 30 January, 2013 Share Posted 30 January, 2013 Actually, I think MP will do well and I agree NA must have known for some time. His demeanour and press 'presentation' definitely changed a number of times in between the usual stuff he gave us. In fact his last one post-Chelsea was interesting because he highlighted how it was that the team had followed instructions and that this was important in Saints gaining a point at that time, although he would have preferred three. He was not on the firing line at the beginning of the season, however, because his post-match interview after the City game included him talking about needing to obtain a certain number of points away from home in order to qualify for Europe and that is what he was trying to do, hence leaving RL on the bench. Tend to agree with DP about MP's tenure being potentially short-term as well. Probably until Guardiola moves on, and despite the laughs I can definitely see NC trying to persuade him about this 'proyecto' of his: bringing through the youth, 4-3-3, etc, etc. And it's all good publicity which NC probably misses because we're not getting loads of positive press (for footballing results) as we had been in previous years. Interesting to see MP 'says' the squad is premier league class (i.e. he may not directly have said that, but that is what we are led to believe). Hope MP improves his English sharpish: am looking forward to his press conferences. Anyone know if NA is likely to have been tapped up for Leeds as was suggested, him being in Dubai and all?
