Huffton Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 A mid sized Championship club, no real prospect of promotion any time soon, maybe the odd push for a play off, run by a businessman with a bit of integrity who stands by his appointments and sees supporters as a part of the fabric of the club, Or, a premiership team with delusions of grandeur, desperately trying to climb somewhere near the european spots, run by a rich megalomanic who hires and fires at will, and treats the fans as if they don't exist and certainly don't matter. Have to say its the first one for me, and the way I feel right now I have to say my 37th year of supporting Saints may be my last. Although that might just be an immediate emotional reaction... Turkish Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 I want to support a club where everyone is together. the players enjoy playing for the club, the fans respect and they respect the fans. where the manager is a good, decent bloke who works hard and feels honoured to manage a club like us. Where the fan base enjoy watching their team and dont feel like they are lining the pockets of mercaneries who will be off for an extra £10k a week. where the fans are appreciated, not ripped off but play a fair price to watch a decent side who enjoy playing ro them. The division that happens in is irrelevant.

I think it depends what age people are. The older we get the more we value things like loyalty and integrity. My 12 year old son, for example, has a more superficial view of life. When we drew with Chelsea this week you could see by the glint in his eyes that he was going to have one of those rare days at school where he could brag about his team's performance to his Chelsea / Man Utd / Liverpool / Arsenal supporting mates. As long as its financially sustainable, I wouldn't be adverse to a crack at the big time even if that means sacrificing an element of "integrity". Minty Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 Completely agree with Turkish, that's the club for me too. But it's not that easy is it? As I posted elsewhere: Like it or not, we all have a decision to make. Southampton FC is not the club it once was. Football is not the game it once was. Money rules. If we buy tickets, merchandise, Sky Sports, ESPN, we are indirectly accepting that fact, and even endorsing it. If we want better players to improve our team, then other players are cast aside. Loyalty is rare (although not gone completely). If we want Liebherr family to finance our rise back up the leagues, we have to accept that there may be decisions made that we don't like. So what do we want to do about it? The way I see it, it's a case of three choices: 1 - Accept it for what it is, 2 - Walk away, 3 - Try to change it somehow. None of those choices are easy, and each of us will find one easier than the other. Few have the stomach for number 3. If I didn't love Southampton FC so much, I'd find it all quite fascinating, but I do, and it annoys the hell out of me. I've wanted to walk away, on principle many times, but as I said, I'm a hypocrite, and I admit it.

More realistic than the dreams some of the mugs on here have paying £10 a match to watch champions league football in a 50k stadium with a team made of of academy graduates. Frank's cousin Posted 18 January, 2013 Share Posted 18 January, 2013 Nice sentiments....but, the majority want their club to be the best it can be, and I am not sure there is much value in accepting a position in a league table as your natural place. Sport in about winning - as much as taking part provides its own pleasures, winning should be the ambition of the club and its fans and when I look at sides in mid table in teh prem who are 'happy' to be there accepting their status, I wonder why it has such an appeal. We enjoyed L1 and the CCC because we were winning and got promotion, had we still been mid table in the CCC would we hand on heart believe it was our rightful place and accept it because the players were average but happy and we all liked the chairman? Corteses will never be everyones cup of tea - but he does not need to be. He needs to deliver results and its his responsibilty to hire and fire the staff to ensure that happens. This is a brave and risky decsion for sure, but did any club ever get anywhere without being brave and taking risks (especially as we dont have 1bn to sling at players)? Sure it could fail, just as we were far from certyain to avoid relegation under Nige, but it seems obvious in hindsight looking at Nigels reaction after Cov last season, that he know the writing was on the wall - he had been brought in to do a job and he had done it in 2 seaons instead of 4. The next phase in te growth of the club will under a new man. As sad as I am to see nigel go, cant help but feel exited that this is a new chapter in NCs plan.
