Don't be surprised if Coutinho is brought in...

...as he played under Pochettino at Espanyol and was very succesful there and is likely where the contact came from (saints were always going to appoint and this was his first player choice).

He will likely be backed in the transfer market by Nicola.

Still in shock in all honesty.

I agree and expect this to now happen. Clearly management negotiations have been going on for some time.

His interpretor has been scouting the English League for the last 6 MONTHS, even before he got sacked at Espanyol.

This has been in the pipeline for a long time. For those who thinks he is starting from a fresh in knowing the ability, strengths/weaknesses of the team that is a very naive way of looking at it.

Hes already said in an interview one of the reasons he is coming here is that he has been promised considerable financial backing.

Where?

It seems likely if this guy and his interpreter/assistant have been scouting the team for 6 months that he will be backed to bring in some new players as he will already have idea where he feels the team needs strengthening.

Why do we want foreign players here for the money? I want our players that were with us in League One and still are now, that would bust a bollock for us every week.

This. I don't like the way this club is going. This appointment reminds me of that bloke who went to Spurs and made a mess of that.

The fact the OS article mentions him expressing worry over not having any money to spend at Espanyol suggests he will here.

He got "Coventried" at Espanyol, like WGS - had all his decent players sold from under him and eventually you're going to run out of talent to replace them with. I'd expect Cortese to also want to make some big signings to support his decision and distract the fans.

They're not good enough to keep us in the Prem, are you happy shuffling around in Championship mid-table ?

Raises quite a lot of questions about morality to be fair.

at Espanyol all his decent players were sold, he was left with players like Butterfield and Forte, then sacked for getting 9 points in 13 games.

Coutinho I wouldn't be surprised with, as maybe now Astori? We certainly are much more attractive to top foreign players which is what we seem to be aiming at. ~Maybe the reason so many foreign bids failed are because of Adkins, I mean, not a household name on the continent, but Pochettino is.

If we announce Forren and Coutinho today at the press conference alongside Pochettino for example, there's no doubt it would numb the effects of Adkins sacking. That said, I'm over the initial shock of the announcement, but I'm lucky that I'm not at work today and have been able to follow and research it implicitly. Pochettino is a big name for sure, and that will attract the big signings, but my biggest worry is it's a season too soon. Had we stayed up, this could've been done in the summer when we have one survival under our belt, but still we'd perhaps have been even more annoyed that Adkins was sacked...

Why are these players just coming for the money? What an ignorant and frankly xenophobic thing to say.

Is it? We all know that only British players can bust a bollock and run round like headless chickens. Jonny Foreigners are all lazy ****s who don't have a clue how to play football. For once DPS I agree with you.

I'm perfectly happy with that if it means we have a club that actually has a tiny bit of respect for its fans.

In total agreement regarding the timing. While it would have been no less disloyal or disrespectful to Adkins, at least if he was appointed in the summer he would have had a full pre-season with the side to get his tactics across and properly evaluate the squad in person.

I'd be highly doubtful that we'll be signing Forren.

In Spain managers are not directly responsible for signings. More often than not these decisions will be made at a higher level (director of football and his department). It's now become more the case where managers have a say but in many cases the manager role in Spain is more that of a coach.

@solentsport: Pochettino: "there's no need necessarily to bring in new players before the window closes" #saintsfc

...and then Forren signs.

I'm pretty sure that's just "manager speak".

Nigel said we'd bring in 1 or 2 over the summer, and we signed 8 players.

Oh yes there is! Most definitely there is!!

Just to let you know Mr Cortese I am expecting Coutinho, Zarate and Biglia to be delivered in the next week just to sweeten the bitter taste I'd Adkins sacking.

Not too mention another centreback!!!!

And why do I have the feeling we will be playing 4-3-3 from now on - and that we'll see a few players leaving before the end of the month - particularly those that don't fit in with that set up.

To be honest I am half expecting to see players like Puncheon and Lambert shipped out as they don't fit this system.

If we'd stayed up and made this change in the summer it would have made a lot more sense - still would have felt bad about Adkins leaving - but I could understand the thinking behind it.

Right now I just don't get it! at all!!

That was my first thought....ok, maybe second thought...after hearing of the new manager. I hope I'm wrong, but have a nasty feeling Lambert might not be a Saint by the end of January.
