Nigel Adkins is STILL under massive pressure at Southampton - despite the club's upturn in fortunes. The Mirror understands that the club are seriously considering former Espanyol boss Mauricio Pochettino to replace Adkins, and sources in Spain believe he is in the frame.

Adkins has worked under pressure all season following the club's promotion back to the Premier League.

Even a decent run of results - they have lost just two of their last 12 league games, including a battling 2-2 draw at Chelsea on Wednesday after going 2-0 down - has not helped.

Pochettino, the Argentina centre-back who 'fouled' Michael Owen for England's winning penalty at the 2002 World Cup in Japan, is the latest name to be looked at as Southampton ponder making a "big name" appointment.

Adkins, who has led the club to two successive promotions, is aware of the expectations under executive chairman Nicola Cortese.

Wealthy banker Cortese expects Southampton to avoid an instant return to the Championship and is prepared to spend big - and it is believed he feels a foreign manager is worth considering.

Pinches of salt at the ready...

Does the Daily Mirror really just not like Adkins and his fun little dance with the media?? They don't do this nonsense to Holloway every week (or even when he was in the prem) and he's just as annoying with the media, same with Mick really.

No idea who's arse they are plucking this story from now.

Call me a radicalist but maybe they might keep printing it because there is some truth in it?

Unfortunately it is best to just ignore any negative rumours out of hand, its best that way.

Lets all look at the situation, I highly doubt the axe is about to swing for Adkins head, but he is only a losing streak away from the bottom three and inevitable relegation, Cortese would be branded an idiot should he not have other options in that situation, yet it is madness that Adkins could possibly be under review ?

Personally, I think it would be idiotic to appoint this joker with no knowledge of the English game as our potential saviour. Can't imagine NC would take the risk.

Seems the reports was first mentioned in Spain on the 10th of January - maybe Cortese reacting to the Chelsea loss if there is truth in it.

Just done a trawl back through Twitter to see where the source of this rumour came from. Appears to be Spanish TV show "Punta Pelota" on 9th January - associated web article here: http://www.intereconomia.com/noticias-/punto-pelota/pochettino-se-reunio-southampton-20130109

9th January

Yep, it's that Inside Futbol article that refers to the Punta Pelota TV programme the day before (9th Jan). Seems strange that its taken the UK media over a week to latch onto it
