Bit of both. Was never a premiership level striker although he did have his moments. His effort and commitment was top notch though which disguised his lack of quality.

Having said that, he certainly looks like a rat but I'm surprised you would be so derogatory towards a player who was pivitol to us reaching the FA Cup final. Shame on you.

Beattie and Ormerod where a brilliant team.

To downgrade Brett because he needed the team around him to be right so bring out the best in him would be to criticise Chris Marsden because he had Wayne Bridge to work off down the left.

The 2003 cup final team was brilliant thanks to these wonderful pairs all over the pitch:

Beattie and Ormerod

Svensson and Lundekvam

Marsden and Bridge

Oakley and Delap (yes, even Delap at his best...)

We played beyond the ability of the individuals by absolutely nailing the team as a whole. Strachan's finest hour.

Most Saints fan's loved him, and rightly so. Sure, he wasn't the best player to ever grace the Premier league, but it was obvious many Saints fans remember the effort he put in for us when we played Blackpool at home in the FA cup and beat them 2-0 and he was substituted. One of the loudest chants of the day was

"You've got Brett Ormerod, you've got Brett Ormerod...."

I don't get the definition of premiership level striker, because the way people use it, most premier league strikers aren't premier league strikers. Most won't be the best or even above average will they....that's averages for you. Someone playing regularly and getting a handful of goals is still a premier league striker.

Other than with us, he spent the majority of his career in the lower leagues. He scored buckets of goals in the lowder divisions before moving to us where his goal scoring record was way below average which was never a problem whilst Beattie was scoring them. Hence my definition of him not being a premiership level striker. Is that ok, or shall I check with you first that my definitions get the adriansfc stamp of approval?

this is a secret. Often seemingly mediocre players suddenly "click " when placed in a team and getting the right partnership.

As mentioned, Brett wouldn't come in the top 20 strikers of that generation, but he served Beattie exceptionally well and made lots of chances for him.

His own modest goal tally doesn't do justice to the service he was to the team at that time.

I loved brett, he wasnt blessed with immaculate talent but he was the perfect foil to drag the best out of Beats

Without that partnership we just would not have had such a successful season, the crosses for Beats were brilliant too.

Strachan turned us into such a hardworking team and it worked. Much like the work ethic Adkins has instilled here again. But with attacking flair instead of a brickwall defence.

He was a fine player for Saints in our best side during my lifetime. Anyone who thinks otherwise must have a very short or distorted memory.

I'll never forget his semi-final M-o-M performance at Villa Park, even if I did have to pretend to be a Watford fan for 90 minutes.
