You be quiet and go and get the Captains bread rolls out of the oven before they burn..

Even if I was a chef. What is so wrong with that as in you would use it as a stick to hit someone with

Chefs at work get paid the same as everyone else at their respective ranks... Many chefs have a really good number too..!!

Odd

 top firm this morning sir!!

Well, seriously, FFS. If I were on a wind-up I could do it much more effectively and wouldnt ponce about pretending to be so f**ked off with things that happen at SMS.

Some people on here are so up their own arses about their opinions and support of SFC that anyone who dares disagree with them gets called all sorts of ridiculous hysterical things. Since when has there only been one way to support, and everyone should be proud and happy at the same time.

I am rarely personally abusive nowaday, having been so often infracted in the past, but the amount I get in return just bizarre. and I am not the only one to cop the insanity/troll/Skate accusation either.

Really, the idea that a discussion site should be one person write a sickly-sweet gushing happy-clappy stream of drivel and everyone else without exception should come along with their own personal interpretation of the nodding dog routine is just plain mental.

Alps - what is your acceptance criteria for the season to be defined as successful?

Avoiding releagtion. Plain and simple.

Considering some of the games coming up, and that apparently we are not-at-the-races in the transfer market, despite a rapidly congesting Treatment Room, I still think that hangs in the balance.

I agree 100%. Especially with the last bit, as this is what everyone seems to want. Had plenty of abuse myself.

It's not that ppl disagree because of your opinions alpine, it's mainly because you can never see the positive in anything. Despite there being a few negatives in the football club (like any) we also have plenty of positives. Yes we're not the finished article by a long way, but sometimes you just need to step back and say, that was actually very good well done.

The players bust a gut every game it's not like our club just isn't trying to stay in the league. There were a lot more negatives 5/6 years ago! Just try and be a bit more appreciative eh?!

Why do you bother supporting Southampton, or any team for that matter? You do nothing but moan, it's absolutely pointless. 20% at best is justifiable, the rest of what you bang on about is either nit-picking or utterly, utterly pointless.

There's some good things, some bad things. It's not all doom and gloom. Just because someone is reflecting on the past 3 years and how far we've come doesn't mean they'd happily be pleased with battling losses - no-one is. I'm not saying it's just you but a lot of people on here need a sense of perspective. The optimism/pessimism pendulum always swings pretty wildly after any result over the past few months and sometimes it might be a good thing to remember just how far we've come.

It just seems to me that at Saints, even of the past 10-15 years, there's a lot of people who want everything to happen IMMEDIATELY and won't take steady progress as a positive. THEY WANT SUCCESS NOW AND NOTHING LESS WILL DO. Well, it'd be nice if we could save all the whining, *****ing and moaning until the end of the season as it's completely counter productive. Are we going backwards? No. Are we standing still? No. Are we tentatively going forward? Yes.

I'm not advocating anyone disregarding the negatives, that'd be foolish - but for k'sake, we've done a lot more right than we have wrong this year and the players, staff and 98% of the supporters should be proud of how far we've come - and continue to progress.

This. 100%

With Cork and Shaw in the team in the league we have:

Won 4

Drawn 5

Lost 2 (both by only one-nil)

of the last 11 games.

Amazing turnaround really but with a number of difficult games in the next few weeks. Hold out for the first 30 minutes V Chelsea and the atmosphere could get ugly for them so you never know.

Have a look back at the results for Saturday then and cheer up, based on your criteria

Hmm. Stand-alone, I dont see much cheer. All draws except Readings win.

However, what has cheered me up is looking at those results and then the next 2 rounds of games (3 in our case). A saultory reminder that whichever bastard teams we have to play, our rivals have also to play bastard teams or have 6-pointers against relegation rivals :)

West Ham have a difficult run soon so they might start to feel the heat s bit soon. Reading will ne chipping away at us all season and it will be annoying but if we can somehow get 3-4 points over the next 3-4 games it won't be a disaster. You're right there alpine, the other teams do have some testing fixtures upcoming, we've done well to be a slight bit of breathing space between us and them.

Honestly Alpine I just don't understand.

We scored 3 more points than Villa, 2 more than Wigan, QPR & Newcastle, and we prevented Reading gaining on us. We picked up a confidence boosting win with an injury affected side.

We could have scored 3 less than Villa and Reading, and 1 less than Wigan, QPR and Newcastle. We could have taken a confidence denting defeat and be sat in the bottom 3.

How can you not see much cheer in that?

After a really troubled start to the season, the side is getting better and better and starting to look at home (on the whole) in the Prem.

NA is also growing as a manager and showing he has what it takes to make us a better side.

People have questioned the signings of the likes of Rodriguez - having watched the whole game against Villa just now he was magnificent and has pace to burn. He will only get better.

Maya and Clyne were inspired signings, Shaw is the real deal and Ramirez shows glimpses of what a player he will be once he gets more accustomed to the pace of the Prem. Puncheon and Clyne have a great understanding on the right.

The normal doomsayers are saying we have no chance, horrible run of games coming up, etc. whilst conveniently forgetting that means we get the really tough games out of the way for the season and our run in looks, on paper, far easier than some of our rivals in the bottom half.

I think we will be fine this season and will only get better next season.

Could not be more proud of our young side and manager - anyone who said we would be in the Prem and holding our own 2.5 years ago would have been seen as crazy and yet here we are.

Good post.

We're still battling away and playing a bit of catch up from our start but we're competing. We seem to to have started getting a few results when not playing at our best and I think that most of all gives me hope. At the start of the season we were playing well but gifting the opposition points, now we are grinding them out. I'm interested to see how we do in the up coming games against Chelsea, Utd and Man City, compared to the start of the season. Chelsea might be too much with the injuries and the closeness to the Villa game but I'm hoping we will look a lot more solid against these sort of teams than we did based on our recent form and I think we have bonus win in us against one of the top 6.

Puts into perspective the drivel that posted on the forum around October time. Most balanced posters were saying (like Adkins was) that the team was learning and improving through a tough start. The progress is plain to see.

As you say, an encouraging turnaround given our start, but there was an excuse to a certain extent because of the run of early fixtures against the top teams. We've looked a lot better after a run of matches against those teams around us.

We held out against Chelsea in our last match against them at home and it took until virtually the half time whistle for them to pull ahead of us. I don't see their fans getting on their backs, or their players becoming nervy after 30 minutes. OK, we didn't play our strongest team against them, but with Shaw and Fonte out with Lallana, then we won't be playing our strongest team again. A point would be a very good result, but a couple of other teams have recently shown the way to play them to get all three. But knowing us, I will hope that we lose by less than 2 goals, to keep us in the same position on goal difference.

As an aside on the flak that Alpine has been getting, he is right that because of injuries to key players like these, we are short of cover, with not enough depth. Unless that is, Fox and Hoiveld are considered adequate, or De Ridder is deemed to be a suitable option playing wide as a deputy for Puncheon or Lallana. It is to be hoped that this cover will arrive shortly in this transfer window, but it is a shame that cover for the defensive positions wasn't concluded before the beginning of the season, as Alpine points out. Shaw and Clyne have proven to be great at left and right back and Yoshida is becoming a good CB, but we suffered because of the absence of Clyne recently and will again because of the absence of Shaw and Fonte.

That is the only thing that takes the gloss off our progress so far, unless those shortcomings are addressed to add cover and depth with equal or better players.

I agree with the OP. Good post.

We have had to learn quick, but we are certainly learning lessons. We have had to take risks and some have not worked ( the goalies, the lack of cb cover) but others are working (Clyne, Shaw, Maya) and we may just be about to see the potential turn into reality of players like Punch, Jrod and Ramirez. All in all, about as good as i could expect.

I also admit I enjoy Nigel's smiley almost p taking interviews post match. His positivity and desire to support his players is great - and his style of talking is so funny it cracks me up at times. If he can keep us up and then push on. I think he may be a future England + Liverpool Manager one day. Or get a UK tour filling stadia like Dara O'Brien or Micheal Macintyre.

Incidentally, on the subject of "controversial" posters here. I think i used to be one many years ago when it was called something else, Saintsforever that's it. I'm a bit too bored of it now to renter the game, though this post is a tiny exception. Some of the funniest posters here though remind me of ex colleagues who lived in a micro-world of their own, immune to criticism, immune to "conventionality" immune to the secret mind control rays emitted by the media and society in general that make us think act talk all the same, indeed criticism spurred them on because it was confirmation of what they already "knew" about themselves and the world. Its not so rare as people think. But it can be tiresome for "straight" posters trying to understand wtf a thread is all about once its been influenced by the funny ones. If you are one of the subversive (aka funny) influences here though it can be very fulfilling and quite a hoot though. A good practical advice suggestion is every now and again put some "straight" and "normal" sounding input towards a thread, then when you come up with your off-message stuff its even more effective. I note a number of the seasoned pro's do that already but for up and coming posters its a useful tip.

Click on alpine's user name, it will take you to his profile. On the menu on the left there is an option which says, "Add to ignore list." Click it and all of our lives will spared ENDLESS nonesense. It's 8 seconds of your life very well spent. Responding to his crap is not.

Agree with the OP. This is a very exciting team for the future if we can keep it together.

This - do it so the rest of us who could be arsed to ignore him don't have to read his wind up drivel.

Why do we have MODS on this forum, it has just about the worst troll control I have seen on any forum on the internet...

Thought I would bump this thread following the great result at Chelsea tonight. Is that 2 defeats in 12 or 13 now in the League?

This team is doing us proud and if we carry on our form we should get to mid table safety with time to spare and I think next season this side will really be something.

Congrats to NA tonight for getting it spot on.

I am so pleased and proud that we stood by Nigel.

Leaving the Hawthorns after our game there the general impression was that Nigel was going to be sacked in the morning. He had come over after the match to wave to us fans who were singing his name and the general feeling was that he was waving goodbye.

I am now so pleased that Nigel was not sacked.

Agree with most of the sentiments of you post. If we can add a bit of quality in the remaining 2 weeks of this window, mid-table is a distinct possibility. Would be nice to enjoy the last half-dozen games without looking over the shoulder.

I think NA took a risk tonight, but pleased for him it paid off, and hopefully will now pay dividends in terms of motivation and spirit amongst the players.

So do you think the arsenal point was a good one? Or the draw tonight? Or the narrow villa win?

Since our comeback to take two points away from the European Champions, our fame has spread around the World. Our exploits are making headlines in as diverse publications as the Himalayan Times and the South China Morning Post.

That'll increase our brand awareness. Be prepared for a couple of new signings from somewhere exotic.

We would have developed a lot more if we didn't have a deadweight manager hanging round our necks.

First game against Arsenal, lost 6-1, next game, drew 1-1 (and should probably have won)

First game against Chelsea, lost 5-1, next game drew 2-2

If a deadweight manager is one who learns quickly from his mistakes and addresses issues so effectively that he can produce improvements like this, I hope he is hanging round our necks for a few more seasons yet.
