Mr X Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 It's a good question, but injuries to Lallana and the absence of Guly yesterday restricted us tactically. Bradford succeeded against Villa by using set pieces and good wing play, we didn't set up like that for some reason. (Although Shaw on the overlap, and Puncheon/Clyne down the right did look promising, the lack of men committing into the box for crosses was highly disappointing for me though. We seemed to stand off their defence in those situations not apply pressure to them.) Adkins is showing to be very flexible tactically, we do not set up with just one system. How we played against Stoke was very different to how we played against Arsenal for instance. It seems he is willing to trust his players in positions that are not necessarily their best.... and sometimes circumstance can force you to play your players out of position. that's a good assessment we do indeed have to mix our formation up at times and maybe that is the way forward
RedAndWhite91 Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 He's definitely not a winger, that's for sure. A class player in my opinion, and from what I've seen he's almost always at his best when played in an attacking central role.

pangy Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 As good as Lambert is he is not the quickest and I reckon you would see the best from Gaston with a quick intelligent striker playing in front of him some of the passes he plays are sublime at times, would be interesting to see J-Rod play in front now they both seem to of grown in confidence a bit,his running and movement has been impressive

BadgerBadger Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 Possible would have said the same about Morgan when he first signed. Now is a different thing. Gaston has disappointed some, but we mustn't loose sight of the fact, he is 22, in a team growing in confidence who endured a horrendous start to life in the premier league. The transfer fee is big by our standards (not by others) but is hopefully a long term investment which fits with the age thing the club is trying to put together. If he is still with us in 5 years time, that's perhaps the time to review his stats. Just an opinion. This

Quite - had many of us heard of Davide Astori a couple of weeks ago, or seen enough of him to comment on his ability? Doubt it, but we HAVE to sign him and he is the be all and end all. Oh and by the way, Ramirez was a winger at Bologna, was he not?
washsaint Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 Usual suspects coning out and having a pop....guess as Guly did not play yesterday the chattering classes still need to have a scapegoat (despite us winning a massive game yesterday). Thank goodness whenever I see Saints games over here in the US the support (home and away) comes across as magnificent - obviously a lot from this board don't go! Ramirez will be quality once he adapts to the pace of the PL. Looking at some of the summer transfers would you have preferred: Giroud (13m) Hazard (32m) Moses (9m) Joe Allen (15m) Borini (10m) Rodwell (12m) Garcia (16m) Scott Sinclair (8m) Steven Fletcher (15m) As for the nonsense we didn't strengthen at the back.....SO Maya, Clyne and GKs don't count? This team is learning all the time and we are becoming very hard to beat (as 2 defeats in 11 shows). And we don't have over the hill over priced, aged players doing this. I remember when we signed the likes of Ripley, Hughes, Speedie, DIxon, etc. - "proven" players who had experience. It is unfortunate there are so many bed wetters and moaners on here that have so many knee jerk reactions. Thank goodness the majority of fans are not this way. We also went down with Harry's list of experienced journey men! Better to have younger players with a crareer ahead of them who want to impress, than those not really committed and looking to stay out of trouble and extend their pay days! We could however do with a couple of experienced old head leaders amongst the youngsters in the Paine, Ball or Case mould to help them get there quicker and stop the panic spreading when things dont go to plan on the pitch ! Dangermouth Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 He's shown glimpses and when he's on song, it's usually a match winning performance e.g. Newcastle. But they are too few and far between. You have to take confidence from how the other players rave about him -and I can see him coming into his own next season provided we stay up. I have no worries about him adapting as he's suited to the English game: he's big and strong and games are a lot more open. IMO he's not helped by the lack of movement around him - we remain a pretty static team with the exception of Jrod. His game relies on the space that others movement creates and runs that give him a chance to pick a pass. Not necessarily about having better players but better movement which isn't the same thing (think Chaplow). Exactly.

Dig Dig Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 Why is it that if anyone dares comment on a player in a negative way, they either don't go to games or are embarrassing? Take your red and white tinted glasses off and ask yourselves if the Villa fans came away saying how wonderful he was yesterday. We won despite of him, not because of him. Had Guly played like he did yesterday, would a thread about it be "embarrassing"" would critics be told that they "didn't go to games" . Benteke, Michu, Sterling have burst upon the scene, having neutrals and pundits raving about them. I've yet to hear one pundit or one neutral speak about Gaston in the same way. The only people who seem to say what a talent is, are Saints supporters, players and staff. There's not one person on here who doesn't want him to succeed, but in answer to the tittle of the thread "has he lived up to the hype" is no or not yet. Personally I believe we would have beaten Villa at home and Newcastle at home with or without him and I'm yet to be convinced he can be the difference in tight games like Taarabt is for QPR , by the way he is 23 compared to Gaston's 22. Yea his assists and goals against Villa and Newcastle were of no consequence at all. Chaplow or De Ridder would have probably done it all instead. lordswoodsaints Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 I'd have to say at the moment that he hasn't lived up to the hype or the price tag but nor has jayrod and mayuka, the only one who's seems to have been a bargain is yoshida but going back to gaston he obviously has talent, after all didn't lambert say that he makes everybody look crap in training?.....he just needs a bit of time to adjust I suppose but as I've said before we probably won't get to see the best of him in a saints shirt so if I had to write a half term report on him then it would have to be 'must try harder'
Joneth Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 Admittedly I've not watched every game this season, but I must be missing something. He's been one of our best players in most of the games he's played. He's not Messi, and is maybe a bit "luxury" for some matches but he's clearly a class act. But I genuinely don't recongnise the Gaston Ramirez some posters talk about on here, world class, one of the best players in the league, winning games for us. Never in a month of Sundays, he has flattered to deceive and people would not be saying these things about him if he played for Villa, QPR, Sunderland or Reading. Tim Vicory doubted if he would make an impact in English football and I hope he's proved wrong, but from the very short spell he's spent here, you can see his point. And how did GR "acquisition" prevent any of this?? Why don't you go and support your perfect team instead of bleating how bad Saints are at every opportunity.
