for_heaven's_Saint Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 On way home now. Was pretty nervy at the end but we did well to hold on. Though Rodriguez was great leading the line, Boruc played well and Shaw was immense. Clyne on the other hand had a poor game and nearly gifted them a goal when he passed it to their player in our own box!

Saint Garrett Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 I like Rodriguez and always support him as some on here know. He gave us an outlet but I've seen him play a lot better than that today. There was quite a few times where he should have done a lot better with the ball. Ramirez was dreadful today in the left just didn't get in the game. And Punch was hugely frustrating. But the defence was a big positive. Almost as good as seeing us win heavily, a hard fought clean sheet and some fantastic keeping from Boruc. Thought the villa fans were an absolute disgrace towards shaw. I don't think I saw one villa fan applaud him when he was stretchered off. I know this isn't compulsory, but it's te done thing. He was clearly hurt and the villa fans were just booing our boys for to be wasting. ******s. P.s they are ****ing dreadful and have come close to worst home support I've seen this season....they're lucky Liverpool was so quiet !!! GREAT WIN!!!!!!! Judge_B Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 My tuppence, in no order - Boruc was good I thought the penalty was for the Guzan challenge, and the ref played advantage I'm a Ramirez fan, but we won despite him rather than because of him I'm a Rodriguez fan, but he needs a bit of Rickie's bulk "Your ground's too big for you" was the worst chant of the day Row UU is a looooong way up the stairs I'd be worried if I were Villa - they remind me of us when we were relegated from the Premiee League Benteke looks a handful - I'd have him here I'd like it if we signed a CB, but this squad as it is can keep us up
JustinR Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 Boruc starting to show why he is likely to be in goal for the rest of the season. Thought the defence were good first half, very nervy 2nd. Yoshi in particular made some terrible decisions. Hoiveld turned far too easily, yet still Villa couldnt score. Shaw brilliant. J Rod was quick and perfect for counter attacking 2nd half, but he's in the premiership now, missed 2 one on ones with the keeper... not good enough. Some will say confidence but he scored against Chelsea in similar positions. Felt Villa deserved a point for their 2nd half improvement. Was f**kin freezing today
labibs Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 Boruc excellent. That's the keeper who kept so many clean sheets last season, knew what he was doing and wasn't afraid to risk taking some kicks. Ramirez looked ineffectual on the left, I think he needs to be central. JRod's energy was vital today, he is gd enough for prem and will be asset in the future. Shaw was also class, we will do well to keep him next yr. Having said that... Benteke won every header he went for, which was worrying andJos did okay, but did not look composed enough, some of his clearances very wayward. Villa were poor, they threw everything at us and it wasn't enough. They might go down. They just don't seem to have the game changing options from the bench. SaltashSaint Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 Just got back to Cornwall after a 9am start, but boy was the journey worth it! Boruc was superb and produced a confident performance, J Rod worked his socks off and with a bit more luck could have had a goal, and Shaw looked immaculate. Not a great performance but a great win and some fantastic support. COYS!
BlakeySFC Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 (edited) Got back from the game about an hour and a half ago. Thought Boruc was awesome in goal, one save from a deflected Benteke shot was awe-inspiring, couldn't believe he saved it. Hung onto the ball well (apart from one time) and commanded his area, came for corners/free kicks. Shaw was absolutely different class, Puncheon and Clyne down the Right were absolutely superb. Morgan and Cork were brilliant at closing down Villa attacks. Lambert was OK, took the penalty very well. Jay Rod was better in this match, but still cannot seem to finish very well in front of goal to me. Jos was ok, but still worries me in the PL personally. Danny Fox just about did enough when he came on, but he still worries me immensely. Thought we were much better than them first half, they were much better than us second half. They had so many clear cut chances in the 2nd half it was unreal, should've been 1-1 really but we were lucky enough/had enough resolve to hold out for a bloody amazing WIN! Hoping Shaw is OK (Officialsaints Twitter/Luke Shaw's Twitter said that it's just cuts to the knee and apparently 'it's nothing') so he may even be fit for the Chelsea game, but I doubt Nigel will chance him starting, but would expect him to start V Everton if everything is OK as previously thought. macca155 Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 Just back... journey seemed to take ages. I wouldn't use words like fantastic, outstanding or excellent about today except for the result. We've had enough dodgy penalties against us over the years so I couldn't give a toss about todays. What did matter is that Lambert put it away with awesome power. It was a good performance from Saints solid at the back. I've liked Borac right from the start, he oozes experience and is starting to dominate his area. I doubt he'll be a top Premiership goalie but he'll certainly be enough for us. Jos did his job as best he could but it was obvious he isn't mobile enough for the prem. The pacier and more skilful forwards can turn him far too easily. Yoshida played very well and I liked his aggression. Shaw continues to improve but Clyne looked a bit exposed with JP not at a 100% today. I've always liked Villa I've been there a lot and I've never found their fans anything but friendly and appreciative of good football. We seem to beat them a lot which always improves my mood. They are in desperate straights at the moment and absolute certs to go down with that team so its no wonder their fans were quiet. Chatted to a few on the way back to the car and they were embarrassed by the booing of Shaw. When it happened my brother said to me that it was good timing as it stopped Villa's growing momentum in its tracks. Their fans realised this and I think what we heard was just pure frustration at their plight. They are genuinely worried about the future, they are skint and they know they'll slide down the leagues just like other teams. Back to the game I thought Lambo looked out of sorts today but he did play some absolute beauties to release other forwards into acres of space. Mainly JP and JRod and they wasted pretty much every opportunity. JRod needs to run at the goal not away from it. Overall I don't think Saints will have any easier games. In the first half they certainly weren't playing at a 100% and it was only when Villa threw everything at us that they looked in any way stressed. Dare we start to believe? No behave yourself Macca we won't be picking up many points in the next four games so things may look grim again in a few weeks.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 Today wasn't flashy or great by any means, but in many ways it shows how we have progressed this season. First half was solid and we played our football in the right areas while ensuring we wouldn't be caught on the break if we did lose the ball. A little more composure and we would have had a few goals in addition to the fortunate penalty. Second half was all about digging in as we didn't show the ability to keep the ball long enough to take the sting out of the game. As we dropped deeper and deeper I feared the worse and make no mistake Villa did have some good chances to equalise. But as the game wore on the players stood strong and did everything that was asked of them. We've come a long way in the last 5 months and todays performance showed that. It wasn't pretty but there was a lot of professionalism out there and hopefully that result gives the team some more belief as well.

pingwing Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 Agree Villa are going down, only Benteke is a prem player. Paul Lambert is a classless tit. We needed a round of "Shít support my lord shít support" as their fans were some of the worst I have seen away this season. On a par with Arsenal. Punch needs a kick in the testicles, no one is chasing him for that place and it shows on the pitch, wastes possession, refuses to go with the flow of play (slows it down at the wrong moments and tries to speed it up at the wrong times). He needs competition that we don't have and it is why he wont get a new contract. Gaston is terrible out on the left. Then so is De Ridder. At least Gaston can track back and win/play the ball, De Ridder looks like he'd be more at home in the L2 standard villa team. Brum is a great place for a few pints though, cheap and friendly (with fairly attractive women), shame there was no wba cheap burgers. Cannot wait to see Paul Lambert sacked as he is a classless tit and a 45k stadium in the champ, they have mostly champ and l1 player so they should be relegated at least once. Terrible team, terrible support and a nasty bit of a nice town.

pingwing Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 Shaw was awesome, so was punch. JRod played so well too Rodriguez had to have score 4-5 to deserve that sort of praise from where I was... Plus Punch had one of his L1 games... I was top tier and didnt think it was great. Sounded good on football first mind. It was a nervy game both upper and lower tiers were really out of sync, one singing one thing and the other wanted lambert goal machine. Bad ground and bad (well good) management of the away fans though the villa fans only sung when it was all Benteke flailing miserably at the ball... Could ask from more for us, but then we have to have a Reading style conductor for the songs which is very gay, we made plenty of noise and didn't do many of the kumbya songs which villa will look back on and feel very stupid if nothing else... Especially as the had the sum total of 35 fans singing most the game...

Faz Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 Clyne made the MotD team of the week, so he must have done something right. According to the MoTD stats, he completed every tackle he attempted. Pretty much what you would like your right back to have somewhere near the top of his agenda. macca155 Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 Lambert out of sorts? Wake up! More in his general demeanour not his play as I said he played some sublime passes but he was arguing a lot and there was handbags with a villa defender at one point. I wonder if he had an issue with JRod playing up front as he really doesn't have the fitness to keep tracking back the way he has to in the position he's been asked to play. Don't get me wrong first on the team sheet every time as far as I'm concerned just seemed to be an edge to him yesterday.
saints-cris Posted 13 January, 2013 Share Posted 13 January, 2013 Got back late last night, great day out. Thought we played well in the first half, even though things didn't click just quite right in an attacking sense. I thought after the first half if we play just slightly better we'd come out winning 2 or 3-0. As it happened, we never really got going apart from a few counter attacks and Villa went very direct. Fair play to Benteke who won literally everything that went towards him. We were hanging on quite a bit at the end, I really felt like they were going to grab something, and they really should have done what with some glaring misses. Boruc - Some very good saves, held onto things well. Best keeper performance this season. - 8 Clyne - Links up with Puncheon really well, thought he had a decent game - 7 Jos - Some fluffed clearances and lost out to Benteke a fair few times - 6 Yoshida - Couldn't handle Benteke and was a bit clumsy missing a few long balls - 6 Shaw - Awesome. Looks like a seasoned pro. Brilliant defensively and made some great runs going forward - 8 Puncheon - Looked a threat, could have maybe had more end product but a decent game for me - 7 Scheinerlin - Some brilliant passing and got stuck in when required - 7 Cork - Neat and tidy, what we know of him really - 7 Ramirez - Never really got into the game at all, rightly taken off I think - 6 Rodrigues - Ran himself into the ground for the team, worked the channels, hassled them, and made some really clever runs. Probably should have been more clinical with his shooting, waited too long a couple of times, but a good game for him - 7 Lambert - Such a good player, always looks so calm on the ball - 7 I'd say overall we were about 6 out of 10, but we got the win and thats all that matters. I have to say regarding the penalty, from my view in the far right hand block of the upper tier, I didn't even see Rodrigues go down, I was just appealing for the Puncheon incident. svetigpung Posted 14 January, 2013 Share Posted 14 January, 2013 Back home In Sweden after an intresting weekend in brum. First snow delayed our flight to UK. Secondly two bodies stabbed outside our hotel, the Britannia. This was 5mins after convincing my son that its ok walking around the town efter dark. Cops suddenly everywhere. Good saturday , though the last 45 of 90 mins was hard work. Loved the atmosphere when the ref blew for fulltime. The stewards let everyone enjoy and get on with supporting the team. Laugh at the stewards post-match organised stroll to the halfway line. What was that about? Had a relaxing and enjoyable evening in the fantastic Old Joint Stock pub . What a place. Great selection of ales & pies! Watching a reply of the match tonight on swedish footy channel. You can hear the Saints sing. Loud & proud.
