Villa v Saints Match Thread

Good half by us, controlled around 75% of that. Goal shouldn't have been a goal, I'll be honest and say that.

But we've deserved to be in this position on our first half control of the match. Once we started calming ourselves down, getting the ball on the floor, and working it in between and down the channels we saw the real villa defense. We've got to make it as hard as we can for that Villa back 4 in the 2nd half, because they will continue to wobble and crumble.

What is it with some fans on this forum , moan when we are not given penaltys and moan when we do . These things tend to even themselves out over a season

It's true. The fact is that diving is a real problem, it's cheating plain and simple. don't you agree it would be much better to stamp it out than just hope it evens itself out

Can see why Villa are struggling - they have even less leadership and defensive organisation than us. Did play a few nice triangles in the last few minutes of the half though.

We're pretty direct, but seem to be playing below par. Seems like there is another gear for us to kick into.

Need to keep exploiting the wide areas, that's where we're getting best results.

Clear dive for the penalty.

I don't think he dived. It looked to me like he was just trying to withdraw his right foot from the tackle so he didn't get injured. Had he not done that, there definitely would have been contact and it would still have been a penalty.

He also appeared to suggest to the ref that he wasn't fouled, so you can't say he deliberately tried to con the ref with a cynical dive.

Agree. It wasn't a pre-meditated dive IMO

Now that is the narrative I like.

ahh come on...he did..or it very much looks like it..no one bar a few saints fans (and himself) will say otherwise...it will no doubt be a major talking point should we win this game....

if benteke done that at the other end..we would be going utterly mental (rightly so)

Looked to me like J-Rod moved his leg away from a poor lunge that might have caused him serious damage had he left it there and that caused him to topple over. Ref gave a pen. Didn't see it as a dive but more as a poor decision by ref. I could be biased though.

Does anybody think we should gift them a goal to make up for the 'dive' ?

Nah, me neither !

In the last minute, once we're 4:0 up ?

Nah, keep the clean sheet.

As for the white kit, this is the first match I've watched wearing the white shirt I got for Crimbo, so if we keep this lead Im all in favour of it.

I've just seen another replay, and I'm pretty sure Rodriguez says ''He didn't foul me'' after the whistle was blown...

Yep, which reinforces my view that he wasn't looking for the penalty - he just went down through the momentum created by the near coming together. As Bexy said, he probably went down to avoid contact.

This is exactly what happened. By withdrawing his foot, he loses his balance and goes down. What's he supposed to do, let the tackle hit him when he can avoid it?

Yep, that's how I see it too

Not happy if it was a dive to be honest, all games should be reviewed and if diving is found by an independent committee then bans should follow, not an 1 or 2 game ban either, cheating is cheating, it would stop pretty quick after the first 10 game suspension.

Just like your cheating Pompey team eh
