What would you do with the sandworks opposite St Marys?

A complex with pubs and restaurants alongside a 12-15k seater stadium WITH ROOF that provides a better venue for U21s and U18's to get "stadium" exposure as opposed to Staplewood. Designed well it could have multiple uses such as:

Venue for touring comedians, music performers.

Boxing contests;

A womans SFC

Conferences, exhibitions

Speedway

Greyhound racing

The list could go on. Of course there are cost implications but this is hypothetical world....

I think that some pretend docks and some chain pubs/restaurants/shops would be good. Somewhere with a bit of atmosphere on matchday.

Yup, agree. Would be nice to have a few decent options before the game that aren't miles away. And another option than have everyone piling over the footbridge after the game.

Having pubs/restaurants would impact massively on the matchday takings inside SMS. Unless we were paid a considerable amount for that pitch it wouldn't be a great idea. Could run an 'outside bar' scheme like they have at the Emirates though, that was cracking.

I'd like a nice open space linking to Ocean Village, bit of greenery possibly and something iconic to go in there - whether we move Ted and comission a few more 'Legends' statues to go alongside him or something else.

A beautifully landscaped garden/park which will provide a fantastic family atmosphere before the game, no cans, hampers welcome ('Please don't litter. Place your corks in the bins provided') . Kids not compulsory but you may well be frowned at if you don't bring one. Strictly no away fans (it will probably need a BIG fence and turnstiles, admission by match tkt only, five pound facility fee). Lots of stewards in Security.Co bibs. Club merchandise kiosks every 50m. Big screens to show highlights of the club's glorious four-year history, these can also be used to project live showings of home games to the ticket-less masses when we have a 48k sell-out in the actual stadium.

Fan-football-tastic!

Or we could just leave it as it is and make sure that the away fans know they are entering a 'proper' working city and they need to watch themselves; No Liberties.

Sarfampton 'til I die!

Stand.

No surrender.

Suvverners, Suvverners Suvverners!

Hold me back!

This ... http://www.southstreetseaport.com/ the A&F shop here has the most beautiful girls I have ever seen.

A&F generally wins the Kingsland Red stateside 'shop assistant' award.

On the original question, how about a maize for passing cars to drive around, diverting off the Northam Road and to operate for the hour after the final whistle . It would prevent the 'man v car' game played after every home game since the police road closure ceased and ultimately preserve the fan base.

An artificial beach complex with bars, restaurants and other entertainment venus but without the dodgy chain cinemas instead art galleries, small music venues inside and out. For inspiration i'd look at the South Bank complex in Brisbane, it's next to a murky bit of river as well.

A concert venue/ice rink/basketball arena, kind of like a mini O2 or like the Ricoh Arena, would be rather good (if it would fit)

Plenty of US indoor arenas combine NBA basketball teams with NHL hockey teams. Add in the ability to convert to a modern concert arena with bars and restaurants and it could be a real added attraction to Southampton; the Guildhall is hardly an iconic and built for purpose venue.

Good shout. Bring the 'vikings' home

Far too imaginative, our council would never permit such a development.

More likely is some 'socially affordable' quality housing so the area can accomodate some asylum seekers, or eastern european migrants.

Totally agree and its a bugbear of mine the way the councils in Soton allowed our city to become a lifeless soulless place that it is.

I have posted it before but we should do what Cardiff have done at Cardiff Bay.....its possible but no we are more interested in blocks of flats and student living dumps.

Successive council's - probably for the last forty years - really have failed the city in my view. Agree with you about Cardiff, but then there has been a lot of Government money , and from the EU as well poured into Cardiff for the area around the Welsh Assembly etc.

Yes I really do agree with this. Southampton Council has an awful track record and has let the city down badly. I woudl not expect any imaginative ideas from them.

I was recently talking to a colleague who is involved with private/public sector business initiatives in Southampton, and he made the point that successive councillors and councils cannot think about the city in a joined up way - the matra is any investment is good investment, it's either party politics or hobby horses, never a long term vision for what could be a great small city. Despite it being seemingly obvious, development opportunities are continually missed and good buildings and areas bulldozed to make way for infill generic spam architecture. It seems that every penny received is spent on trying to polish bad areas whilst ignoring improving the city's assets. There is no viable plan for amenity, leisure, or heritage (which is layered in the city), and the lack of imagination is breathtaking - the course seems to be to turn Southampton into the Hull of the south. I was once at a seminar, and a very senior SCC employee (in a thick Lancashire accent) said that the council had mooted a lighting scheme to turn the Civic Centre clock tower into a giant 'virtual lighthouse...to show the city's history of protecting shipping' - I kid you not...
