The Kraken Posted 11 January, 2013 Share Posted 11 January, 2013 I don't think jay rod was a waste of money at all, he has had pretty limited chances and the more clueless think it's all about goals .. his attitude, workrate and work off the ball is excellent.I see the investment anyway.. Give him the chance and i think we will see the finished article, thank god we this f ucking forum represents the minority. Finished article? Behave. Even the most ardent Rodriguez fan will tell you that he has a long way to go before he's anything close to the finished article. Right now he's a youngish lad with a bit of promise who is starting to adapt to life in the Premier League, but still not worthy of a first team place and has a long way to go yet to prove that he can be a consistent hit at this level. St_Tel49 Posted 11 January, 2013 Share Posted 11 January, 2013 well your original point was that every striker does it every week, obviously not true, I really don't see the need to constantly put down the players and the manager. Nor me
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 11 January, 2013 Share Posted 11 January, 2013 Hard to work out where we're going with Rodriguez. I have a little suspicion that the club had doubts about Lambert in the summer and Jay Rod was purchased to be his replacement. But as it turns out Lambert has done well and Jay Rod as shown he needs some refinement to be a starter in the league as a lone striker. The trouble with Jay Rod is that he has a lot of tools and I am not sure any single one stands out as what defines him as a player. But at the same time I think his movement is brilliant and it will definitely come together in time - however it won't come if he doesn't play (so a bit of a Catch 22 situation). If he can keep his composure in the final third he will score lots of goals - in fact I think he'd have another half dozen by now if he relaxed and didn't tense up a bit when opportunities come. Whether that is because he is trying too hard because he is in and out of the team or whether that is something down to his age and lack of experience at the level we'll have to see. The finish against Chelsea was certainly very composed so maybe he can push on now. Overall I am happy that we've got him at the club and very happy he isn't playing left wing any more. In terms of the interview, he said he was frustrated but I think it was said in a way that every footballer who doesn't play is frustrated, not that any promises were broken nor that he can't understand why he isn't playing. The Kraken Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 (edited) But i said give him the chance and we will see the finished article, never said he was now.. one day bud, keep the faith :-) That's the thing with Rodriguez; its not that (IMO anyway) he's a bad signing now because he's a poor player. And its not because he was overpriced; we paid the market value for him, and we had to agree a fee the fee we did for him in order to outbid other clubs who were willing to pay a similar amount. So we didn't get swizzed or anything like that. I just feel that, in this season, there were better options that Rodriguez for a club like us. We needed someone who could hit the ground running, and indeed the club were looking for someone who could challenge and replace Lambert straight away. In this season of consolidation I don't feel we should have taken such a risk and taken on a player who needs developing to such an extent. If we stay up then it becomes a better looking acquisition, as we should push on a touch and solidify our PL position (you'd hope, anyway). But until then I feel we lack a true alternative option to Lambert (as Villa have with Bent, Benteke and even Weimann in addition to that, for example). adrian lord Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 Lets just hope frustration doesn't give way to disillusionment. It is a fine balance.

That's Rodriguez's problem. People expected him to be Lambert mkII, but he's quite obviously not. The debate here isn't one of quality, because both players have plenty of it in their own way, but one of style. It was clear from the start of pre-season that Adkins wanted to play fluid football in a 4231 system. It's hard to do when your striker drops deep to be a second playmaker instead of breaking beyond the lines. He's very good at it, but it has meant that we've had to make tactical concessions to make it work, some of which have paid off and some of which haven't. Window Cleaner Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 Worked so hard today - I just wonder if he lacks that little bit of pace to become top class though? he has all the pace he needs, a bit of composure and a bit of guile added to his game will make him a really good player. Needed Gaston to be a weeny bit better today and JRod would have had a couple of assists as well.
RobM Posted 12 January, 2013 Share Posted 12 January, 2013 I never once thought he lacked pace today, he was at worst a match for AV's defenders but usually had a yard on them. He put in a great shift today, a very good performance.
