trousers Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 This is quite interesting (if you're a nerd like me) http://oxfordinternetinstitute.github.com/football-mapping/#southampton
richard Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 That's really cool! Thanks for posting. I'm about to start a man city vs man utd war at work (I work in manchester).
stevegrant Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 Not many in London? Yeah, quite surprising, that, although I guess most Saints-related tweets are posted at or in the vicinity of SMS, rather than where fans live/work.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 Not many in London? Surprising. The last 3 times I've been out I've met Saints fans...I suppose a lot of them work in London but commute from outside.
Dangermouth Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 I was interested in the spread of each team's mentions. So I did QPR. They have had a lot of press in recent times and also have a wide spread. I don't know if this includes 'retweets' etc, but ultimately it becomes less and less informative the more you look at it. Nice idea though.
Saint86 Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 Well, why are there so many QPR fans in Southampton.... they are second to us in half the areas...
Saint86 Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 Ey, PO1 and PO6 - its happening already! Remember skates "your sons will wear are shirts"
Summers Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 I'm surprised too, the HP14 postcode has nothing and thats where i'm based as near as dammit!
Lighthouse Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 Didn't realise Saints were so popular in the Inner Hebrides.
Ludwig Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 This is pretty unrepresentative, I think. Firstly, most Twitter users do not 'geotag' their tweets, we'd probably be left with a small and unrepresentative sample of tweeters let alone football fans having this restriction in place. Secondly, not all football tweeters hashtag their tweets, it doesn't mention which hashtags it takes into account for each club, nor does it take into account the fact that people who aren't supporters of the club would use the hashtag of other clubs (for example, Saints fans tweeting about Harry Redknapp moving to QPR may use both the Saints and QPR hashtags in their tweets), so it doesn't really represent fan distribution in any real way. It also doesn't state whether it ranks the total number of mentions, or the total number of unique tweeters who mention the hashtag, I'd guess there'd be a reasonable difference between the results of the two different methods. I wouldn't put much stock into this at all, quite interesting though, but it has severe limitations.
Big Bad Bob Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 Well I live in BH17 and there are no Saints fans who geotag their #Saintsfc tweets living there apparently!! Mind you I'm not a songbird!! The old MI/BI adage applies here "**** in, **** out"!!
Sour Mash Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 I was interested in the spread of each team's mentions. So I did QPR. The9 Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 Lots of multi-club hashtags skewing this data then... "look at all the Saints fans in Wigan", etc.
The9 Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 Also, if you look at how many areas in which there are multi-team ties for position in the data, you can see that in some areas we're talking about no more than 3 tweets (central Wales being a good example).
Berkshire Saint Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 QPR, Stoke and WBA all seem to be disproportionately represented...guess they're the clubs outside the top ones that have had the most coverage this season.
buctootim Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 (edited) Think its based on tiny numbers judging by the number of teams tied in equal positions in most postcodes. In mine for example four teams are tied on 'First' with three more on equal fifth. Literally only three or four twitterers will likely get you top place in most locations. Edit - just seen what The 9 said. Edited 11 January, 2013 by buctootim
The9 Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 QPR, Stoke and WBA all seem to be disproportionately represented...guess they're the clubs outside the top ones that have had the most coverage this season. It's from the first weekend of the season, QPR lost 5-0 at home to Swansea and West Brom beat Liverpool, both results worth talking about. What's "coverage" got to do with anything, this is twitter ? Stoke drew at Reading, so I'm assuming there might be a lot of Saints fans at services on the M6 on the way to Manchester - though M11 at the Etihad itself itself doesn't have many Saints fans, the percentage would be dwarfed by City fans anyway.

Actually I think in SOME postcodes there are only a few, but equally in areas with teams there are loads of tweets, often all stuffed into small inner-city postcodes in tiny areas of the map. It needs some kind of heat chart to spread the figures more broadly around focal points (like the Etihad). Edited 11 January, 2013 by The9
VectisSaint Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 Just shows all of us Saints fans up here in SN11 are not stupid enough to use Twitter. It suggests there are none here, yet I know of at least 8, not bad for a small town in Wiltshire (Actually I do admit that I do occassionally look at Twitter, but its a bit embarrassing).
lordswoodsaints Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 Reading looks like a little splattering of jizz on a UK shaped tissue
Saint Martini Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 Funny how we are so popular in Perth, Scotland.... I wonder why that is....
SaintRobbie Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 "We, don't necessarily, support our local team"
SaintRobbie Posted 11 January, 2013 Posted 11 January, 2013 Funny how we are so popular in Perth, Scotland.... I wonder why that is.... Same reason Queens Park RANGERS are so popular in most of Scotland perhaps??
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 12 January, 2013 Posted 12 January, 2013 Are the Scotland ones not actually tweets for St Johnstone?
View From The Top Posted 13 January, 2013 Posted 13 January, 2013 Strange that there are none from my postcode!
