Vital Transfer Window

Stating the obvious I know but with Fonte likely to be out for a while and Lallana still at least a month away this window is becoming increasingly huge - probably the most important since the takeover for me.

Currently we only have 2 fit CBs, both who have some level of question mark about them (Hooiveld much more than Yoshida for me). Whilst we have others they are nowhere near the standard we need ie Martin so are not worth including.

We also lack a wide player in the absence of AL meaning that Guly and Puncheon (who are doing well) have zero backup - if one gets injured/loses form then De Ridder would be nearly in for a start!

is this a fair summary?

Essential Requirement:

2 x CB - at least one before the Everton game.

1 x wide player as soon as we can

Could do with Adding:

1 x GK (but it seems like we won't)

1 x CM (as soon as Cork or Morgan are not in there we struggle)

Long Shot:

1 x Striker? We seem to have quite a few but with Mayuka away we are possibly short? If Lambert say got injured we would have Jay Rod backed up by Lee? (Pls don't say we should recall Sharp - he can't play the role we need.)

Not sure 2 centre backs are a priority, 1 is and then a wide player then a goalkeeper and then maybe another DC.

We can't possible need a stiker though can we? as it's widely known that we wasted our money in the summer buying too many strikers ;)

For me we needed 1 x CB desparately before Fonte got injured. If he is out til March or so then we need two.

If we got say Astori and then he got injured we would be in exactly the same situation as we are now. Even if we got one top class CB and then a younger improver (Prem version of a Seaborne or Martin) that would be ok.

I agree but I think the wide man is a bigger priority than than a second centre-back, so is probably the GK.

Seems from the link to that Danish guy from Bolgona that might be what we are doing though.

I think despite what some believe there are clearly multiple discussions happening at the same time, and options are continually assessed.

A couple of months ago Reed told a friend's mate that they had four in mind, CB, CM, LB and a defender ( presumably somebody that can play anywhere in the back four). The two named so far match that, whilst maybe the emergence of Luke Shaw has taken the priority off a LB.

Makes sense and again reinforces the club stance that no GK is on the way. The Fonte injury and Shaw emergence might have changed the thinking slightly I agree.

A couple of months ago, you say.

But since then Lallana and Fonte have been injured (I assume Clyne is back soon) and as Charlie writes, Shaw has stepped up to the plate, and Puncheon hasnt signed anything.

Agree with the OP. Our fit first 11 is decent and probably a better side than our league position indicates.

The issue we have is that as soon as a first teamer is out, we look horribly short on options, bringing players not good enough for the the prem and resort to playing people out of position.

I think a good example is having the likes of Puncheon as more of a squad player rather than one of the first names of the team sheet each week. Look at Swansea as an example. Dyer had a very good season for them last year but they improved and now he is a quality option for them off the bench or when they need to replace an injured player or shake things up a bit.

Still lots of work to be done before we can say we are a semi decent prem squad IMO.

I don't agree. Our most vital window was last Summer, identifying what we needed when prices weren't inflated and before the start of the season. Need to be pro-active not reactive.

Listening to the radio this morning and it seems Hooper is going to Norwich Butland to Fulham. HR knows how to get things done, he is getting Livermore from Spurs and Pallacios ? from Stoke. That will strengthen mdfield, and he knows that tippy tappy midfields will not bring survival.

Yep, agree completely. We are now in damage-limitation/crisis mode...AGAIN.

And already 11 days in, playing Villa tomorrow in what could very well be NAs last match if we make a complete f**king hash of it, and we might as well be singing :

"lets all scratch our arses, lets all scratch our arses, la-la-la-la-OI !!! la-la-la-la-OI !!!

lets all scratch our arses, lets all scratch our arses, la-la-la-la-OI !!! la-la-la-la-OI !!!"

Well I think it's eveident we identified targets in the summer, as Adkins stated about two centre backs, but one of them we were in for (as has been mentioned on here) didn't come off. Now people say why wasnt their a back up? What if the back up was ****? Then what would people say. It's incredible the same point is brough up over and over again. I'm pretty sure they aren't sat around scratching their arses! Transfers are pretty complicated. The club want x amount, the player wants x amount, then what if we don't think the player is worth that, or the player is unsure about moving. With so many unknowns why does everyone think it's as easy as saying we want x player, here is some money, thanks!

Remind us how 'damage limitation mode' has effected us the last two January transfer windows.....

One third of the way through the window, a crucial game tomorrow that could be the 3-points difference between relgation and Prem survival come the end of season and a great deal of serious concern amongst the fans who do see this window as vital. Still backing Adkins as the failure to sign anyone earlier is more likely to be down to the Chairman and the 'recruitment committee' than it is to the manager but this is the week when we could be one week nearer safety or one week nearer the Championship. At least its only football.....

it will be hugely disappointing if we go into the everton game without a new CB brought in and ready to start

I do agree with that. Especially since Fonte injury. Everton is a winnable game even though they are obviously a good side.

We clearly have targets and I think next week we should really be looking to seal one, especially as they can then start to settle earlier.
