Luke Shaw - "I'm here To Stay"

For 10 million you could get a better left back than Shaw in his current state. We wouldn't get 10 million £ if we sold him today. Needs work on getting by-passed too easily.

Who? I genuinely cannot think of anyone. Unless Ashley Cole is willing to take 65k a week on a 3 year deal.

Honestly I'd say Danny Rose or Assouu Ekotto are better left backs right now than Shaw. Shaw has potential but either of those 2 would do a better job right now and would be available for less than 10 million £

I'm delighted that he has made a verbal commitment to pledge his immediate future to us.

But I really do gain a lot of satisfaction when considering all the tosh emanating from various Red Tops about how it was a done deal that he would be off to Arsenal or some other glory team during this transfer window. Those journos really do look like idiots now and their credibility will have been severely dented in the eyes of those naive enough to believe that everything printed in those rags must be true.

So when rumours surface in these rags that Adkins is about to get the bullet, we can now refer to the erroneous reporting of Shaw's departure and say that they didn't get anything right there, did they?

Those Journos havent really commented on Shaw staying suprisingly.

One of the worst is John Cross from the Mirror who continually said Arsenal were targetting him this window, that talks were going to happen etc and that he would probably move.

Perhaps Shaw just likes playing, wouldn't get in front of Gibbs at the Arse so he'd not be playing much PL football.

Well, if they did, they would have egg all over their faces. They wouldn't want to look like misinformed idiots, would they? It's a bit like Lawrenson stating that Ramirez wouldn't ever be playing football at Southampton. I don't recall him ever admitting that he was made to look like an idiot either.

Nice one Luke, Good news of course, but it makes sense on many fronts.....

YES... he may /may not be sought by " big clubs " (according to which " comic " you read)...it's also a fact that he'd be spending time in their U21 side first ...and then a month or two on the bench and an occasional sub.app...... as there is little chance he'd be displacing some £10 million foreign international defender with 30+ caps, (or whatever) ..from the day he signed.

Secondly, it's a tribute to the club's organisation that he wants to stay (with the likes of his pal JWP), and sees a future with Saints and not " the so-called glamour of a big club." and of course Wayne Bridge , who was already a first teamer who went before when he debuted at just 18 y.o. (1998)

Finding such talent as a tender age is very exciting to watch, and Gareth Bale of course is a recent graduate of the Acaademy, as was Alex O-C, but we older fans can think back to some names in the past who " made it young " and whenever I watch Luke Shaw dribbling down the wing...my mind goes back to another young left back from the 1970's - Steve Mills.

Although born in Gosport, Steve chose the better of the two local clubs, and was in Saints' youth set-up before he reached 16. Already in the Reserve side at 17, Steve made his First Division (read Prem). debut in April 1973 before he was 19 and was a regular for several seasons, and was capped for England U23 (when only 21 y.o)

Sadly..a tragic car crash almost crippled him and it took a year for him to make a comeback before he was forced to quit football at aged 23.

It was later discoverd that he had leukemia and he started a fund to help a research fund. Saints waded in with a special benefit game and over 20,000 fans turned out at The Dell for an emotional evening to honour Steve, and help contributions to the charity. Steve Mills eventually passed away in 1988 (aged 34).

Not to take the gloss off a great news story but... am I the only "oldie " who recalls Steve Mills' no-nonsense tackling and those tremendous left-sided runs of his....all those years ago ?

The same Southampton hating Mark Lawrenson that has regularly predicted us to win this season, in fact if his predictions had come true on January 1st (his last league predictions were December 31st) we'd have been 12th on 22 points. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/20790407

It's no secret Arsenal were interested in Shaw, they would have tried to put pressure on him by feeding this info' to the press. If your on the Sports desk at the Sun and and Arsenal senior bod phones you and says "oi, remember me for this next time you want to take someone out for a decent lunch, but that Luke Shaw lad at Saints, our scouts have been watching him all season, he's mustard, and with Santos not being all that we'll be sounding Saints out to see if we can get him". What do you expect the Sun journo to do? Tell him thanks but no thanks the paper's full? EVERY transfer link story has a source, I know that for a fact, whether it be the player, his parents, a mate, his agent, the buying club trying to put pressure on (in Arsenal's case that exact strategy has worked with our players before) or the selling club trying to flush out potential bidders. With every tip off from one of these sources it is followed up by getting confirmation from another source. Not rocket science, believe me, enough of this goes on without having to make stuff up lol!

Some on here need to calm down, jounos don't have it in for us, the only problem we have is they don't particularly care about us either way if anything.

can't be bothered to think about what this may or may not mean, what might happen down the road and how things may change. Right here, right now this is bloody brilliant. Feels like a Lallana signing type moment, which IMO played a huge part in the proceeding two years of success and new signings. It's a pivotal moment that could give us the foundation to keep our youth and maybe build a proper side that gets better rather than worse. Enjoy and bask in this news and worry about the rest later. Roll on Saturday...

Im sure Mark Lawrenson or any journalists for that matter couldn't give a toss if you think they are an idiot, Les.

Assou Ekotto at current is in my opinion definitely better than Shaw. Not Danny Rose though. Although if you gave me a choice of Shaw or Ekotto, I'd still go for Shaw, being English and having much more potential.

Yes but a price today is made up of a two main issues namely current state and future potential as its future potential that will determine future price. On that basis he is worth more than the two you named as he is younger and has greater potential.

I was confident he would stay. I think if we weren't in the premier league, it might be harder to keep him, but we should have a couple more seasons of watching him develop now. The future looks bright if we can build a team round the best talent from our academy with the odd star signing (like Ramirez) adding real class. Just wish we could develop a real top class CB through the youth setup.

Its all thanks largely to two men, one of them has died and we seem to regulary have certain fans bemoaning the other two. What fickle fans we have ^_-

I have read this several times and I still can't work out how many I am supposed to be bemoaning.

Good news though to quote an Adkinism 'until he puts pen to paper...'

There's a lot of fawning over our players, especially our academy products -much of it parochial and OTT. JWP being a recent example. But having been slightly sceptical about Shaw, I do believe he's the real deal.

Even making Fox an afterthought and putting in night and day performances is no mean feat.

This thread really is buckling under the strain of having everyone reaching a consensus. A few trying to take it off course, but failing. Bravo! We did it!

Fantastic news on Shaw front. I hadn't seen that goal before Turkish - shows he has real talent all over the pitch!

Some on here need to calm down, jounos don't have it in for us, the only problem we have is they don't particularly care about us either way if anything.

So I agreed with a post which suggested that journos who had predicted that Shaw would sign for Arsenal should at the very least admit that they were wrong, the same with Lawrenson with his opinion that Ramirez would never sign for us and I'm faced with a diatribe about out how these journos operate.

I have a pretty good understanding about how they work, thanks. I repeat, I only suggested that they should have the decency to admit when they were wrong, or at the very least learn from their mistakes and be a bit more circumspect the next time. But I won't hold my breath.

Regardless of how they obtain their information, if they present it in such a way that they infer that it is a done deal, then the end result when it doesn't happen, is firstly that they will look like idiots and secondly that as a result of them constantly getting it wrong, nobody will give their predictions any credence.

I'm old enough and have seen journos getting enough of their predictions badly wrong in my lifetime to take the second position, that most of the stuff they write is made up rubbish. In the same way that they will gladly accept the plaudits when they get their predictions right, they should likewise accept the derision when they get them wrong.

Today, Shaw once again showed maturity beyond his years. He is agile, quick, reads the game well, but his best asset to me is his cool head; he rarely makes rash challenges (Fox) or makes mistakes when under pressure (Hooiveld). In American Football he'd be the quarterback with that mindset.

He is very thorough and concentrated in all his actions, be it defending from a winger, shielding the ball for a goal kick, or passing the ball upfield. Lately, he more willingly comes bombing forwards (is he growing in confidence and courage?) - against Villa there was a nice shot and today there was an assist to remember.

In short: he has athleticism that many other players can match, but that cool head of his is worth it's weight in gold.

oh do stop it

Stop what? Who do you think is better? Danny Rose isn't as good defensively and I've never rated Assou-ekotto, he seems to have benefited from the old "absence makes the heart grow fonder" while he's been injured. Only reason he looked decent for Spurs was because he was playing with Bale who took all the attention from the opposition team, affording Assou-ekotto tons of space.

For me Assou Ekotto is actually a cracking player but with me in that Danny Rose is far from convincing at the back. A real yard of pace though and may have the potential to be a flying full back but i'd genuinely be hesitant to predict how good he will be i'm sure shaw will be better ;)
