Adkins' future in doubt (again) - Daily Mail

It won't. Our position in May will. Villa beat Liverpool and lost to Bradford. Single games tell us fck all, which you should know after so many years.
You're right that the final position at the end of the season is all that matters, but are you honestly telling me that if we lose to Villa and end up back in the bottom 3, you wouldn't be questioning our management team at all?

Nope. I don't see any reason to replace Adkins. First season up, playing some good stuff and seem to be improving steadily. Yeah better teams can always stuff you but that's the premier league. We're competitive and in with a good chance of staying up. Hard to argue with staying up as success season 1, then trying to improve next year, which is a bigger test.

There's no way to prove it of course, but IMO, we'll be in a better position in 4 or 5 years if Adkins is still here, than if we go through another 3 or 4 managers.

I agree with that. As people no longer value Adkins back to back promotions, his prem performance alone has kept us competative and with a good chance of staying up at the half way point. I would have thought this to be good enough but for some people, clearly not.

Clearly you would judge it on the game. If in the 5th minute Yoshida pulls down Benteke, is sent off and they go one up with a pen I wouldn't expect us to win and wouldn't blame NA.

If we are terrible and lose 4-0 I would ask questions.

If it was a tight game which they edged 2-1 I would be disappointed but wouldn't blame the Manager unless he made some odd decisions that contributed to the loss.

Not every defeat needs a Scapegoat.

Sorry I am slightly lost on the competitive premiership performances, what do you mean exactly? Have we been unlucky but we have remained competitive in the League, playing well and are at we predicted to be so all going well? Still in with a good shout of avoiding relegation?

.

We were predicted to be relegated, currently we are out of the bottom three.

As a club we are achieving about as much as was expected from us, i.e. battling relegation.

Our start to the season was tough and led to some poor results but we have improved massively since then and we are much more stable as 14 points from 10 suggests, and only 2 defeats (both being 1-0) would indicate that we are being competitive, that sort of form for the rest of the season will see us clear from relegation.

The Di Matteo thing for me is weird, he won a Champions League but I think that was more down to the players than him (and a whole slice of luck) The league form considering their subsequent summer spend wasn't that good and his decisions cost him (no striker v juve) as did is inability to rotate his squad. I think people are also overstating his reputation. He's hardly been linked with many jobs and I don't see his 'reputation' winning us any star players, it's the money offered that matters.

Can't really look at DiMatteo's Chelsea tenure as the whole setup was on autopilot at the time.

Better to judge him at West Brom and when compared to Nige I don't think he is any better.

Gross is an odd one, wasn't exactly great last time he was in the prem.

Best to keep Nige.

How many of those have we won? Picking numbers to suit an argument is pointless, the greatest measure of how we are doing is the League table, that League table says we are out of the relegation zone by goal difference thats all I need to know and our games from now to the end are more difficult as we play a lot of relegation troubled teams away from home so its going to be far more difficult, have we got the tactical nous to close games out?

From history no we dont, we dont have the players nor the manager to do so, the bookies are rarely wrong.

I'm not picking numbers to suit and argument, 14 points from 10 games is mid table level form. We are picking up points and in reent games we have started picking them up against teams we weren't expected to, continue like that and we will be fine.

History? What the f*ck has that got to do with anything.

Also the bookies are wrong all the time, they had Adkins as the first to be sacked.

You sound like a cliche, old, has been football pundit.

So you are happy with this season? Out of both cups with a wimper, gd out of the relegation zone? Are you satisfied? I am not, not at all.

How much money have we spent for that or shall I say wasted?

How much have West Brom, Wigan and Swansea spent?

Yes, still within a good shout of avoiding relegation IMO and our first 11 is not bottom 3 material.

Having depth and a competative squad is our weakness at the moment, not Adkins. When he can field our first 11, we've looked good and have outplayed teams at times. I think we could be a lower mid table side if we could get some consistency there.

Ultimately, if we lose a couple of players to injury and have people like De Ridder, Lee, Fox, Hooiveld coming in (who are not good enough IMO) then any manager would struggle with that.

H.

But as NA likes to point out himsef often enough it's not about 11 players. If the squad of 24 isn't good enough then it's up to him to do something about that. I find the very idea that a PL manager can in any way be dissociated with the quality of his group of players absolutely laughable. He's the manager and as far as I know responsable for first team affairs. When the team

is not performing the manager carries the can, it's football; NA needs to do something about all the rubbish he's been forced to put up with.

We needed to spend money to get players, had we not we wouldn't be where we are, but probably would have been cut adrift. All in all our transfers have been a success. With one or two taking longer to settle. But that's to be expected. The premier league can be a tough leage to get used to. For whatever reason we didn't sign anyone else. no one knows why. That's the end of that.

I don't see your point? What did you expect? Use to be mid table? Hardly realistic is it. We didn't have a prem squad when we came up. I feel we are getting very close to having a very competitive one!

How much did Wigan & West Brom spend to reach a level of security over a prolonged period? Yeah, we out-spent a lot of teams this summer, but, think about how far we have come in such a short space of time.

We have had to spend to keep/catch up.

Personally I can't get my head around any Saints fan who thinks Adkins job should be in doubt.

For me - he is the best Manager we have had in my lifetime (25 years).

He is a decent manager that has been helped considerably by the money spent in the lower leagues, he has also spent an aweful lot in the top flight, a league that for me you cant just get away with spending money in.

Im not saying he should be in danger, he has a TW and half the season to go aswell as the uptirn in performances from us.

But

To say he should not be under review is utterly reduculous when you factor in the cash spent

That fails to take into account a lot of the teams Saints are competing with have had years of Premier League football and Premier League income to build a squad. Saints leaped up two leagues in two years and took the first steps to building a Premier League squad in the summer window. Give us some more transfer windows and the strength and depth of the squad will improve as we bring in better players and get rid of those that haven't been able to keep up with the progress of the club.

But could the manager not say to the "transfer committee" I do not want Mayuka, I want a CB ? How difficult is that to achieve ?

We got Yoshida and a lot of people now appear to be happy with him. Yes, we need another one especially with Fonte out and that appears to be what the club are now looking to do.

I would image it could be quite difficult! Where does everyone get this idea that you can just say, right lets buy a better centre back. There are 100 reasons why this didn't happen. An nowhere is it evident that one deal was at expense of another!

Nigel wanted 2 CBs he said so, pretty memorable really because he rarely says anything in so definitive a manner, he got 1 at the last gasp and had Mayuka forced upon him. Bloke needs to grow a pair and sort out that flipping committee.

I don't follow Wigan or West Brom all that closely, so it would be difficult for me to comment.

Why are people so ****ing hung up on this committee thing? It is totally common place, I'd be willing to bet that more clubs have these in the prem than not. I also highly doubt that we signed Mayuka at the expense of another CB, how do you know we weren't in for other CBs and the deals didn't go through for whatever reason? Or would you rather we just spunked millions on a player not up to standard? Who let's face it, you would probably then only moan about the committee wasting money here.

If you look around at the general standard of defenders at the moment, there really isn't a great deal of quality out there.

How do you know it didnt happen ? Plus we got a CB, we got a wide man and we got a striker aswell as a marquee signing

Except for a LB (shaw)

That was pretty much what everyone was asking for in the summer, no one knew how bad the GK situation would be, nor that Jos would struggle.

You cant look back and blame everyone but Adkins, nor can you just blame adkins, its a committee, the only clubs that probably dont have one are Man Utd and the Arse, and thats because the clubs as old as their managers, as soon as SAF or AW leave Id put money on the fact they will get a committee.

Why on earth do you and so many like you continue with this nonsense about these being alternatives? Mayuka is a very promising aquisition in a position where we definitely needing strengthening in the long term process of building up our squad to be able to compete in the PL. It is hardly a secret that more time and energy was spent in the last transfer window trying to sign the two centre-backs NA identified as required than were spent on any any other position. In the end we only got one - and he was not probably one of the main targets. But you can't force teams to sell players or players to move. No great scandal. Absolutely nothing to complain about. If we get Astori the wait will certainly have been worth it.

Exactly this, some times I just think its easier to blame anyone but Adkins as he is so likeable I mean lets look at history.

Playing Fox, Guly, youth - Cortese picks the team

Playing 433 - see above

Signing inadequate players - committee picks them (that adkins is part of but we will ignore this)

Then the players are changed, the tactics shuffled and we get told that Adkins is now picking everything !! Really ? I mean are people that naive ?

What if we sign some very good players in Jan ? Will that be because he has got rid of the committee ?

Besides, as you said a transfer team is common place in probably more than 80% of top flight clubs right now and even seen at places like the posh etc Window cleaner should know this, he is an intelligent footballing bloke. They are designed to protect clubs against the Dalglieshs and hughes of this world, they are not always great but required.

Saying that Adkins didnt man up about positions is rediculous, we were in for plenty, we probably didnt get many, and let me tell you we had a habit in the summer for identifying targets that were too ambitious, perhaps a higher profile manager would seal the deals ? Or perhaps we should aim lower ?

Perhaps, he is obviously here as he has potential, if he turns out to be decent than its worth it, if not then well, he will be a flop.

Ok, so given the structure of our transfer committee which is common ground in modern day football, you think it's fair for Adkins to carry the can for the level of our squad depth?

He's one cog in the machine which identifies and gets us the targets. He was aligned with what the fans identified all summer, particularly regarding CB's but the club didn't fulfill it.

I hope you would be as consistent in your views had we had anyone else as manager. I wonder if Brendan Rodgers is to blame for them only having 1 striker for most of the season available even though he made it clear to the board that he wanted Clint Dempsey. They didn't delvier but presumably that would be Rodgers fault using your rationale? I hope you wouldn't make excuses for them or anyone else.

It might well have been planned to use an out and out striker as a wide man, we have some strange ideas like that. I mean it worked for Walcott didn't it but now he wants to be a real striker. Just because you're fast on your feet it doesn't make you a wide man although we seem to think that it does. To be a real wide man you need guile and speed and the ability to go past a player without losing control of the ball..

Let's put it this way, in my own personal opinion as long as Les Reed is on any committee whatsover at SFC the results achieved by said committee will be open to question. Gerrard once said he had no respect for the man and neither do I. How can a man who has achieved so little be responsable for so much.

I am fully aware of how a wide man should operate, I have played and coached the game long enough.

This is Adkins though, love the man but makes some very very strange decisions at times, sometimes they work others are utter failures.

I mean, Stoke, they go down to ten men, our so called big defender hasnt handled long balls well anyway, lets get everyone behind the ball and try to soak it up ?!? When have we been able to defend all season anyway FFS ??

He was tasked with getting the academy up to scratch, now I dont like the man but he has done that, he looked at other elite training centres, took ideas and built what we have now. That is what he is good at TBH and from that respect I have to applaud his efforts.

If he is identifying targets though then yes I agree, not that there is any real evidence he is on the committee
