spyinthesky Posted 6 January, 2013 Share Posted 6 January, 2013 Always a shame to see empty seats but those who didn't go were fortunate to miss 45 odd minutes akin to sitting in a dentists chair!! However the crowd figure was the 4th highest of a day when a lot of 'well supported clubs' had surprisingly poor attendances. So well done for all those, like me, who had to endure one of the most one disappointing second half displays in recent memory (Leeds 4-3 defeat remains stong in my memory!!) Obviously there are a number of part time Chelsea fans in/around this area gloating at the moment but I remember seeing Saints wallop Chelsea 6-2 at Stamford Bridge back in the mid 60's and then going back to London in the 70's/80's when Chelsea played in front of 13-15,000 home crowds. So a lot of those following Chelsea nowadays are no different to the remote 'glory hunters' who latch themselves onto the likes of Man Utd, Liverpool etc. I hurt today but this only stores up emotions to doubly enjoy the times when the team do well, particularly against the so called 'bigger clubs'!! Leicestersaint Posted 6 January, 2013 Share Posted 6 January, 2013 I was surprised that the gate was so high as a lot of people, including season ticket holders, said they weren't going following the Leeds debacle when we put out such a weak side. It was a shame we did so poorly in front of quite a big crowd.
Ewell Posted 6 January, 2013 Share Posted 6 January, 2013 So a lot of those following Chelsea nowadays are no different to the remote 'glory hunters' who latch themselves onto the likes of Man Utd, Liverpool etc. I have lived in Surrey since 1986 and back in the 80's\90's pre Abramovic Chelsea fans in pubs were a fairly rare commodity. They have always had a fairly big sleeping fan base but every kid in the area now seems to follow 'The Chels', every mature bloke also supports 'The Chels' and used to go in the 80's pre Abramovic despite the fact they regularly got under 15k. They are massive glory hunters and 90% of the modern fans have jumped on the bandwagon. I even know a former Yid who now supports them which is one of the biggest betrayals in football I have ever seen.
rooney Posted 6 January, 2013 Share Posted 6 January, 2013 It was good for the club financially, that they let Chelsea have so many tickets, otherwise the gate would have been well down for the Champions of Europe.

Window Cleaner Posted 6 January, 2013 Share Posted 6 January, 2013 (edited) Some people are way too sensitive. Football chants can't hurt you. Indeed they can't and they're far tamer than in days of yore. Why in the Milton we insulted everyone and everything. Sing up the West Stand, Who's that copper with the helmet on etc. Gay people, bankers and women didn't go to football (can I say that? is it PC? ) so it didn't matter. bangkoksaint Posted 6 January, 2013 Share Posted 6 January, 2013 I think this will be a watershed year for football and attendances at grounds. The economy is stumbling towards another recession and with ever iincreasing prices and a fairly poor product I believe football may pay a price. How much only time will tell. I live in the north west and Utd, City, Liverpool and Everton all have tickets readily available. Ticket prices for OT are bonkers in particular and more people will have to take a pragmatic view on football. I consider myself relatively fortunate in that I have a reasonable salary but even now I am starting to think where I will draw the line in relation to games i attend. With the new TV deal coming next season players need to start taking a hit and supporters need to start being supported, otherwise we may start to see even more empty stadia. derry Posted 6 January, 2013 Share Posted 6 January, 2013 If Abramovitch gets bored Chelsea could well follow Pompey. Unless he is willing to put in £1/2Billion to pull out they won't survive. If he gets bored they are unsellable without that.

Wilko Posted 6 January, 2013 Share Posted 6 January, 2013 Despite going to about 15 games every season, I know that now we are in the top division I can watch every Saints game on the internet. Does that make me less likely to go to the games? Maybe.

Asaint4ever Posted 6 January, 2013 Share Posted 6 January, 2013 I'd hate to be a Chelsea fan, There was fully grown groups of men acting like 16 year old chavs! They are trying to be a man utd, And that chant champions of europe song they sang over and over and over and over and over and over again! ZZZZZzzzz and for the firework well that just shows you what sort of childish prats they are! But apart from that i thought our support was poor. VectisSaint Posted 6 January, 2013 Share Posted 6 January, 2013 but I remember seeing Saints wallop Chelsea 6-2 at Stamford Bridge back in the mid 60's Same season we conceded 5 to them at home (though we did manage 3 in reply). My first game, was it 66/67 or 67/68 (my In That Number has been hidden somewhere while I decorate the study). Big Ron, Chivers and a kid called Channon up front. Channon kept falling over and the crowd treated him a bit like some do Guly today.

Factually incorrect, I used to go to games in those days with a banker (amongst others), he later became Assistant Secretary at the Dell and lived in the Milton Road next door to the ground. Don't know about gay people or women though - not sure I knew any of either of those groups in them days

I used to go the Dell with a bloke who worked at Barclays Portswood, never thought of him as a banker though.

Does that make me less likely to go to the games? Maybe. I include myself in this category. Haven't been to a game yet this season. £30 in petrol of train fare on top of match ticket doesn't help. I'm probably a classic example of the bloke who went home and away from late teens through to late 30s and finally got fed up of feeling like I was being fleeced every week. Will do a couple of new grounds this season but that's about it. Probably won't even bother with a home game unless it's a relegation decider. Very much enjoy watching us online every week though. With regard to OP: saw us at Stamford Bridge early 90s with only 7000 there. There were more there for the ZDS game in the same season (12000 for that I think)
