Saints vs Chelsea Match & Reactions Thread

What really depresses me is the lack of good chances being created by Saints.

Shape was good today for half an hour or so but after we scored Chelsea just seemed to be able to stroll in and around our penalty area without too much trouble.

Unfortunately we reverted to the kind of form we showed earlier in the season when Cork was not in the midfield.

Davis is infinitely worse defensively as he won't tackle, doesn't close down and constantly gets caught going forward. Another negative on Davis is that passing is so predictable and ineffective it's unbelievable.

No, no, no. He is not good enough for the PL and will be out the door in January. Have you learned nothing from the experts on this forum?

Who on earth has ever said that Rodriguez would be out of the door in January? Has anyone ever said this? Or is it made up?

That was one of the most forgettable afternoons I've had in a while.

First 20 mins we looked up for it, causing them problems, zipping it around, and we scored a great goal. From that moment though, Chelsea woke up.

You have to hand it to them, for about a 40 min period after our goal, and the start of the 2nd half, they tore us apart and we had no answer to it...and we do have an uncanny knack of conceding goals at **** times. In games like this you need to hope they have a below par game, and we need to play at our absolute maximum for 90mins. The reality is that they were irresistible at times, and we can't do much about that, and we were also slightly below ourselves which doesn't help things.

We need to forget about this pretty quickly though as a fan base and a team, put it in the bin and forget it ever happened. All focus is now on the Aston Villa game, that's all that matters now.

Overall, there's not much a club like us can do if a team like Chelsea turn it on like that - zilch.

Christ we really have been on the end of some awful reffing this season.

Never a pen and a clear foul on JWP before the fourth.

Mike Dean really is a spineless **** of a ref.

Indeed - several blatant shoves in the back on Rodriguez in the first half went unpunished yet the first time Yoshida has a nudge at one of their forwards Dean blows up...

Complete waste of time going. The fa cup has really lost its magic. Rubbish the chelsea fans having the whole northam. Just had to sit and listen to them the whole game. We didn't try second half. What's mayuka done that's so wrong that he's behind lee to come on. Cork was exposed and ward prowse useless. Fonte getting injured final straw for me. J rod good finish other than that was weak in the air and didn't hold ball up.

No-one (well no-one that I have noticed), the post was about Chung as well you know. At least I think you know, never quite sure with you.

Should of played Lambert then?:D

Boruc - Made some decent saves. Defence gave him no help.

Cork - Out of position too much.

Shaw - Bullied

Fonte - Decent, hope his injury is ok

Yoshida - Did ok, no aerial presence though

Morgan - Rubbish

Davis - Rubbish

JWP - Rubbish

Puncheon - Far too casual

Guly - Did ok

Rodriguez - Decent display. No chance in the air though.

Chelsea fans - Massive bunch of cúnts.

Played well first 25 minutes but we don't have an answer to teams that press us and deny us midfield space, we can't always expect to be allowed to play our passing game. When teams turn up the pressure we start misplacing passes, mis-controlling the ball, panicking, going down blind alleys etc. We need to find ways of gaining the initiative again. Although today to be fair we were up against the Champions of Europe and FA Cup holders but this also seems to happen against lesser sides. Good sides seem to be able to 'turn up the wick' when required.

Hopefully Fonte's injury isn't as bad as it looked.

not unduly bothered, should have put out the youth team, trouble is you can't charge £25 for that.

Chelsea's players must have got their collective arse kicked into next week on Thursday, we were next up.

NB why does Gaston get rested all of the time and others not.

Lee was awful when he came on too, same for De Ridder. Need much better cover in those wide areas.

Those 2 need to go, sharpish. SDR is just dross.

Lee has really disappointed me, he's as much of a non-event as SDR these days. The fact we're having to use them at the moment is worrying.

Gaston wasn't fit, had a dead leg.

The chants from Chelsea were all about how they were the champions of Europe. But then it took them until virtually half time to gain a lead on us, fielding a team which wasn't our strongest. With luck they will shortly be knocked out of Europe and soon knocked out of the FA Cup too, preferably by lower division minnows, to remove the smugness they showed today.

When we next come across them in the league, provided that we are fielding a full strength team there is no reason why we shouldn't give them more of a game. After all, if QPR can beat them their last match, we ought to employ the same tactics of closing them down, denying them space and hitting them with fast passing.

Although it would have been nice to have gotten something from this match, it wasn't our strongest team and we can now concentrate on the league. Another plus point is that three of our nearest competitors have to play replays.

On another matter, how is that Chelsea managed to get in so many flares and pyrotechnics? What happened to the security? I'd have liked to have seen Mr Plod identifying the culprits and taking some action. Otherwise the FA should fine them to make an example of them.

Oh well, I hope that they enjoyed their short journeys home and no doubt we'll be seeing their fans again in Southampton next weekend doing their shopping with their wives and kids in their kits too. At least they get to see their team play live once a year.

Lets get Ridder.

Both nowhere near good enough for Prem level. Bizarre that SDR was so far out of favour for most of the season yet is our first option off the bench now.

The AL injury has exposed the lack of depth out wide big time. If he is out for much longer its a big blow.

Can't be bothered to dissect the whole game, but to the morons who text in to Solent - What did Boruc do wrong?

Was he at fault for any of the goals today? No.

Was he at fault for the goal against Arsenal? No.

He keeps his place, he's the best we've got.

Guly - Did ok

.

Like most people week in week out you obviously listened to the game on the radio. Guly was shocking. One decent cross, other than that it was a series of way too long balls and pasing the ball to a Chelsea player. How this guy got 90 minutes is beyond me, although to be fair the rest of the team with a couple of minor exceptions was almost as poor.

Shaw and JWP looked like 17 yr olds today. How many times can Shaw get nutmegged FFS.

Fonte HAD been looking more assured this year but today was awful. We need two new CBs immediately.

Terrible game, shocking display.

Lee and de ridder are just both not very good, was very surprised de ridder has come on recently over Mayuka.

Yeah, wtf is the deal with Mayuka? Why have we spent £4m notes on someone who we're not playing? He's easily better than SDR, I just don't understand it. I mean I've not even seen him enough to judge him as a good player in saints terms, but talk to fans around Europe and abroad...they're in no doubt he's class. It's a weird one.

He's now gone away for 6 weeks as well, but we won't miss him as we never used him....

I'm pretty much with that. The non-aware fans who just look at the score, will blame the GK - obviously, but he didn't do a great deal wrong today. If we're not going to get a new GK this month, then just stick with this guy.

More worried about the confidence it may have on the team. Hopefully it will have a "Villa" effect.

Punch looks like he needs a rest all of sudden. Last few games he has been his usual (this season) huge attacking threat in parts but seems to have lost the sharpness. Or is it just me?

Maybe because he's off for 6 weeks he haven't wanted to disrupt the side too much? Or maybe he just hasn't been adapting well in training. Bizarre one anyway.

Boruc didn't have a chance with any of the goals - listened to Merrington on Solent and have to say I thought his comments were completely unjustified - but probably designed to appeal to the masses.

Guly was very very poor today. At 2-1 down Boruc kicked up field, Guly did his best "cant jump, wont jump" and Chelsea freely headed the ball back upfield. Guly then limped slowly after the Chelsea players and missed two chances to tackle/clear before Chelsea scored and effectivly ended the game!! Was good to see Shaw (17 year old) telling him exactly what he thought about it

Have we won a game that Guly started this season?

Merrington likes Kelv, DM will still be saying KD is our best keeper when he (KD) is on a zimmer frame. Anyway Merrington is an old dinosauric fool.

Couldn't give a ****, but sorry for the supports who paid good money to watch that shambles.

Only positives is that Borat didn't do too bad, and Jay scored.

CB ASAP please Cortese, I'm sure Adkins talk at the end was all about being able to concentrate on the league.

We are so going down.

We simply arent good enough to compete at this level. And chances are our defence is about to be thrown back into turmoil. And our management are playing latter-day Neros or clever-clever d*cks so we will fail to reinforce in this window.

Nice one, I'm not sure how relevant it is to this thread though! You do realise this wasn't a league game don't you?

Maybe you pasted your pre-written comment for next week into this week by mistake.

Actually, I was in the stands today cheering the lads on, as I have been for almost every game this season. Guly gets so much stick from two-bob pr!cks such as your fine self for misplacing a few passes when everybody did the same today. We were crap in midfield, and Guly wasn't helped by the fact that he played in 3 different positions across the game either.

Guly was bloomin awful today and you know it! Some happy clappers now seem obsessed with defending him, not sure why?

I think the pro-Guly brigade were bullied at school and now feel sorry for poor Guly as nobody likes him

Well I never thought I really wouldn't care when my team got stuffed 5-1 but I really don't. As long as Fonte isn't too badly injured I don't mind. Odd.

Pretty much the same, had a feeling of we just went through the motions of having to play the game, if we got something out of it then ok. 5-1 was a bit cheesy but Adkins sat down for most of the second half says a lot.

I have to say next time we have Mike Dean as a ref beforehand we really must practise chipping the ball against anyone in the boxes arm, that has to be the most gift wrapped penalty decision ever.

Ah well C'est la vie.

You wanted someone to bite and you've got it.

It was a weak team, in the back of Adkins mind I doubt he wanted us to progress, focus on the league. Chelsea team was strong.

Defensively we're linked to a ten million pound centre back for a start.

Either you have mental issues or you love a good wind up.
