The Kraken Posted 5 January, 2013 Posted 5 January, 2013 Yes, alpine is a deluded muppet who posts nothing but complete nonesense. No sh*t guys, he's only been doing it for over 7 years and still you lot persist with actually talking to him. No matter how clever you feel point out he is wrong, it's not going to achieve anything. Ignore him, talk to the normal people about the game and if you can't do that, turn the computer off and do something else. I am soooooooo sick of having to trawl through these utterly utterly pointless arguments every time our resident mountain dwelling fruitcake checks in. Please please please just DON'T talk to him. Its an entirely fair comment. Point taken.

It's just amazing that he is so incapable of realising what he is doing! No evidence of self awareness, humility or grounding. He would be a great person to negotiate with. Just recognise what he wants, make him believe it's in doubt, let him panic and close for an entirely one sided deal in your favour.

saintbob40 Posted 5 January, 2013 Posted 5 January, 2013 JWP and Davis at CM. I am surprised it wasn't 10 as they are useless without the ball and were constantly too far advanced leaving the defence exposed . Get Cork back at CM with Morgan pronto!

I am surprised it wasn't 10 as they are useless without the ball and were constantly too far advanced leaving the defence exposed . Get Cork back at CM with Morgan pronto! JWP is an amazing prospect, but today shows how we shouldn't rush talent like that at such a young age. He was a bit sloppy in posession at times and guilty of a few basic errors, which of course get massively punished at this level. We have a reserve right back in Richardson and should play him there; moving Cork both gives us a non-specialist full back and weakens the central midfield. I'm also still amazed Luke Shaw is looking as consistently good as he is, and wouldn't be surprised if he needs resting at some point in the season. his development needs to be managed carefully, and often playing week in week out isn't necessarily the best way.
harvey Posted 5 January, 2013 Posted 5 January, 2013 Not too bothered tbh, thought the team played ok and that just about sums us up atm 'ok'. I don't know why we bought davis, he doesn't offer anything at all apart from sideways/telegraphed passing......just as well have kept hammond. We need a 'marrauding' midfielder in the pemier league, not a so/so lightweight, we had one of those.

For me, Davis just doesn't fit our way of playing, he doesn't have the ability on the ball..... but neither did Hammond. Yet Hammond had more familiarity with the team and did seem more dynamic. Davis has greater experience though and obviously isn't a mug in a team that is set up to suit him.

'Amazing prospect' maybe?........today he looked tidy at times but sloppy also. We just seem so ponderous and predictable, too much sideways and passing back and no real cutting edge.
harvey Posted 5 January, 2013 Posted 5 January, 2013 Oh! and SDR was embarrassing.........I thought we were premier league now:?

I watched the game on ESPN where if the second half wipe-out wasn't hard enough to watch, the commentators total focus on Chelsea was unbearable. When Fonte was injured there was not even a comment about his plight, even when the stretcher came out - just gushing praise of how good Mata, Ba, Hazard etc are (and they are of course !) Kraken, agree about the weakening of the midfield with Cork filling in at RB - but I'm struggling to see what JWP brings to games like this at this stage of his career. All I can see at the moment is good touch and a tidy pass, but unless he develops physically a career in midfield at this level looks beyond him.

All I can see at the moment is good touch and a tidy pass, but unless he develops physically a career in midfield at this level looks beyond him. He didn't do great today. But he showed against Man City on opening day and against Man United that he has the game to compete against some top teams in this league. And he's not yet 18, playing in one of the hardest positions on the pitch. As I said, he's a prospect and shouldn't be rushed. Ideally you'd maybe not have him play in games like this, but with Cork moved we didn't really have too much choice. Will he be a superstar? Don't know, perhaps not, but he certainly looks like he can hold his own in the Premier League and will hopefully get better the more he fills out and the more he learns. I disagree that a midfield career looks beyond him; he's not the finished article by any means, and he's not yet worthy of a starting slot, but I certainly see a top flight future for him.
JackFrost Posted 5 January, 2013 Posted 5 January, 2013 If Alpine's so convinced we're going down and is giving up that easily then why does he keep posting on here week after week? His posts are few and far between after we get a good result and he spouts the same ultra-negative views time and time again after a bad result, views which are frequently proven completely wrong as Chez has given one example of earlier in the thread. He then accuses Chez of being smug in hindsight, when the fact that most people on here told Alpine his viewpoint was complete crap before we got promoted is lost on him. Lighthouse is right, I really don't know why people still talk to him.
Patrick Bateman Posted 5 January, 2013 Posted 5 January, 2013 It's all about opinions, but just got home; thought Guly was anonymous today and Boruc pretty bad. No one really stood out for me apart from Morgan and J Rod who I thought both did well. Highlight of my day was getting off the train at Fleet with some gobby Chelsea fans who were probably late 20s and who got picked up in some sh*t old 4x4, by what appeared to be one of their mothers. Losers.
Saint Charlie Posted 5 January, 2013 Posted 5 January, 2013 No. Horrendously wrong is predicting 6-0 thumpings and winning 3-0. I did no such thing. A few defeats I predicted were draws. Still 2/3 of the points were dropped. But hey, you go exaggerate like a teenage girl. Lol, you predicted one point from 5 games. We got 10.

Patrick Bateman Posted 5 January, 2013 Posted 5 January, 2013 What did Boruc do that was bad, he wasn't at fault for any of the goals. To be honest, I was watching him really closely on purpose - he wasn't horrific, but he was just a bit too flappy for my liking. I'm sure he'll still come good, but I wasn't impressed.

Fair enough - is he only 17?? It certainly wasn't an easy game to come into and make an impression; we certainly got overrun in the middle of the park. I hope you're right about him then; disappointing for all if he ends up a Simon Gillett style of player. I assume he hasn't got the style of game for a flanker position? Nathan Dyer style.

If he plays, the rest of our side need to understand we no longer have the 'Lambert' out-ball option.
S-Clarke Posted 5 January, 2013 Posted 5 January, 2013 Oh, and on another note, that's the last we'll ever see of the white kit. What an horrific marketing choice that was.
Charlie Wayman Posted 5 January, 2013 Posted 5 January, 2013 Wake-up call, reality check call it what you will we are in the same league as this Chelsea team and we never looked like competing with them. Ok maybe we will never match them for sheer individual quality as it doesn't come cheap and seemingly the West London cossacks have an unlimited pot of gold or is that oil supporting them but we really have to do something in the transfer window and something big? I read that "we will only buy players that will improve us", on today's showing it would be difficult to buy a player who didn't improve us so lamentable were we at times in the second half. We need to spend and spend big if we have ambitions to be anything more than also rans in the PL. As things are right now a loss at Villa and with the inevitable thrashing at Chelsea and probably defeat to Everton to follow we could be bogged down in the bottom three and losing touch. This is not a case of faint hearts, today all our flaws were ruthlessly exposed with many of our players clearly not good enough to compete at the very highest level.
Charlie Wayman Posted 5 January, 2013 Posted 5 January, 2013 not unduly bothered, should have put out the youth team, trouble is you can't charge £25 for that. Chelsea's players must have got their collective arse kicked into next week on Thursday, we were next up. NB why does Gaston get rested all of the time and others not. He was injured not rested, the recurring dead leg problem and it's beginning to be a serious worry
Hamilton Saint Posted 5 January, 2013 Posted 5 January, 2013 He was injured not rested, the recurring dead leg problem and it's beginning to be a serious worry In his extended pre-game interview a few days ago (available on Saints Player), Adkins said that Ramirez's dead leg injury was on the other leg - not the same leg as the previous injury.

Yes, I know Chelsea won and this warranted more coverage but... They might as well have just said Chelsea v no one, it would have made no difference. Their football coverage has been horrific for as long as I remember though. Give the FA Cup rights back to someone who knows what they're on about.
Lighthouse Posted 6 January, 2013 Posted 6 January, 2013 I'm quite happy with the complete lack of interest in Saints from ITV. With any luck half the people watching wont realise it was us getting spanked and think Chelsea have just battered Spurs or something.

Wes Tender Posted 6 January, 2013 Posted 6 January, 2013 No point getting a new keeper if the team dont make enough tackles during the game. Saints have got to be the weakest team in the Prem I was going to respond to this, but it's just so inane, that it isn't worth the trouble.
Lazlo78 Posted 6 January, 2013 Posted 6 January, 2013 Meh. Strong Chelsea side that obviously cruised home when we resigned to having 4 regular starters from the 10 outfield players (Yoshida, Shaw, Puncheon and Cork, with the latter played out of position), and 6 that may currently be regarded as reserves in relation to our strongest XI (Hooiveld, Davis, Ward-Prowse, Guly, De Ridder, Rodriguez). We gave them a good fight in the first half, but then decided to cut our losses... Highlight for me was Shaw. First half there was one episode where he turned Hazard around and kept going up the flank. Cheeky for such a young player to just push forward at any time! Also he saved a goal when Boruc only managed to block the ball into the area - again he kept his balance extremely well and shielded the ball. Such a cool head - way beyond his age... Downsides: Fonte's injury overshadows pretty much everything about this game. Such a blow! We have loads of squad players that - as harvey states in post #506 - played "ok" today. No, they weren't the worst ever, but they weren't really a match for an expensively assembled squad of players who do have that extra something. Actually, Lallana, Lambert and Ramirez may have been our best hope of producing something remarkable, but without them we had a team of "ok" workhorses with little star quality. Bottom line: the moment the Chelsea lineup was revealed we knew we were in for a tough afternoon - they simply need to advance in this tournament and we don't.

Colinjb Posted 6 January, 2013 Posted 6 January, 2013 I thought that only counted if the ball went backwards not forwards. It's all about player position, not ball placement. Ba ran through, his own team-mate was the last man at that stage.

Legod Third Coming Posted 6 January, 2013 Posted 6 January, 2013 Just watching the highlights - didn't go to the game as I was a bit under the weather. Never mind that there may be a gulf in salary bill and value, the biggest worry is yet again that our defending appears at times amateurish. Both the first and third Chelsea goals are really poor goals to concede - defence not unlocked so much as pushed wide open... We desperately need to up our concentration levels and discipline.

Sadly that might become a reality.

He is the only player that might have a sniff at getting in that Chelsea side. Sadly that might become a reality. Maybe, although even today he cost us at least one goal with some terrible defensive/positional play. Don't get me wrong I think he is a great player but not quite there defensively at times. Got absolutely murdered at Stoke as well.
Cabrone Posted 6 January, 2013 Posted 6 January, 2013 I have to be honest, Chelsea were magnificent and gave us an utter pummelling after 35 minutes. Yes, we played a weakened team but the mood they were in meant we would have gotten beat anyway regardless of lineup, that's just the way it goes. TBH I'm more gutted that we couldn't seal the wins against Stoke and Arse and that QPR got 3 precious points at their place because I can't see us getting anything out of them. Ba looks like he could be their own Van Persie. JRod showed some real class with the goal and Boruc showed enough to persist with him, the rest were pretty anonymous. On to Villa and a full strength team, 3 points are very much up for grabs.

Once we went behind just before half-time the game was up for us I feel. We turned up and were creditable for 45 minutes apparently, after that next Saturday was far more important. Chelsea will be looking at a League Cup, FA Cup, Europa League treble with a 3rd place in the PL probably fairly easily in their grasp. We even made it easier for them by holding Arsenal on Tuesday.
SuperMikey Posted 6 January, 2013 Posted 6 January, 2013 Just watched the highlights - how the ref gives a penalty against Davis is beyond me! He's about 5yds away from the incident, it's directly in front of him and nobody's blocking his view. Unbelievable.

Sometimes you've just got to hold your hands up and accept that they are light years ahead of anything we have, and they played well.
