Should we forget about the FA Cup?

Interesting debate.

With games coming thick and fast, especially the addition of the Chelsea one then there is an argument for it, but then be could get thumped which wouldnt be good for anyone.

Key part is not to risk players with niggles or where we have no cover, but play a strong side full of players at a high level of arousal.

For me the setup for this game is totally different to the League Cup one cause it´s a week to the next game, the players have had 5 days since the last game.

In the League Cup the game came only on a two days rest.

We wouldn´t take a chance with players that are not 100% fit but we´ll put a strong side out there.

And it is also a home game, you treat those Cup games different to away ties.

That's the important distinction for me too.

I'm not for or against resting players for cup games per se. Instead, I look at it on a case-by-case basis.....if there's a cup game within a few days of a league game then I would rest more players than if there's a gap of a week.

So, for example, I would put out a stronger team for tomorrow's cup game vs Chelsea than I would do if it went to a replay on Wednesday 16th Jan....

It's not a black and white debate IMO.

We should forget about not putting out our best side. yes rest anybody injured or under the weather but still field the highest quality side we can who will Chelsea put out possibly Dumbo Ba to give him a game half there team is injured they are there for the taking. Benitez may gaet the bullet as well as they will then have basically no trophies to go for.

Well if Wenger can say qualifying for the CL is a kind of trophy, then I'll say avoiding relegation is our's this season.

We have a squad, lets use it wisely, I'm with trousers on this one.

A strong side, with a couple of adjusments if any are carrying knocks or particularly tired. Saints at full-strength at home have a fair chance of nicking something against Chelsea. What a buzz it would be to knck them out of the FA Cup, the confidence it would give the team, the momentum to be taken into league.

Secondly, you can't complain about the likes of Man Utd devaluing the FA Cup and then want Saints to play a weakened team. It's the greatest cup competition in the world, it's a crime not to at least give it our best shot.

I'll be happy with whichever team Nigel selects !

I've been a bit shocked by the lineups for the last two matches but the tactics seemed to work out well and in both cases nullified the strengths of the opposition (bear in mind that Stoke and Arsenal are polar opposites!) !

He has to continue with Baldrick in goal though, as we will never really know his quality unless he gets a bit of a run, apart from that, over to you Nige !!

Would I take relegation if we won the FA Cup? Yes, so long as our current wage bill and BVI loan wouldn't cripple us financially. We've got our best side for years. Why on earth would you not want to take advantage of that by trying to win the cup?

There's no way that Nigel will field his strongest team tomorrow. We've had a busy Christmas programme with most of our players having played every game and have a massive game next week against Villa. Despite having a week to rest he will see it as an opportunity to give the likes of Lambert, Puncheon, Fonte etc a rest at a crucial stage of the season. I think we'll see Hooiveld, Mayuka, Ward-Prowse etc featuring tomorrow.

Conversely, if we played a full team, got dicked and picked up another 6 week injury it would be a crime to have gone with the strongest team.

Strong team. You wont see the other clubs picking weak teams and neither should we. While the last few results have been decent they have not been wins. If we get beat badly tomorrow and then fail to beat Villa the pressure will be back on big time. I think Adkins will be aware of that.

With one game in ten days i think thats plenty of time for them to recover.

Because the 2 week rest they had before the Sunderland game really helped !

It's not about the rest aspect per se, it's more of a precautionary measure to ensure your key players aren't injured for the (arguably) more important games.

For example, you wouldn't enter your prize marrow in the fruit and vegetable competition at the local village fete a few days before the National Giant Vegetable Championship....

The thought of playing a weak side really annoys me as it did at Leeds, it brings home everything I hate about being in the prem, it just shows the only ambition is to stay in the prem so we can overcharge fans to pay stupid amounts to players who don't give a dam

I'd like to see us rest anyone of any use other than the GK and 2 CBs who need to build a relationship. Rest the others for Villa and the rematch.

So, by a process of elimination :

Boruc; Richardson, Fonte, Yoshida, Reeves; Davis, Chaplow, Ward Prowse, De Ridder; Rodriguez, Mayuka.

Assumes Mayuka hasn't gone yet. If he has, um... Lee instead. Can you guess if I'm going or not?

Shame about the Cup, but we need Prem first this season, when we've got a better side and established in the Prem we can try to win a Cup too, we don't need the distraction at the moment.

Maybe a few changes, but not a badly-weakened side because a bad defeat now.. after our recent revival of form ....wouldn't auger well our confidence ....and for the League game in a few weeks time.

I expect us to put out a relatively strong side, and go for a win. There aren't three points at stake, and surely the challenge of playing the FA Cup Holders must be a great incentive for the team to go all out.

For those fringe players who rarely get a start, it's a chance to play in a game against top opposition, and enhance their reputations.... and those who may not be regulars will improve their valuation, too.

Play to win give it our best shot not sure about you but I won't be too dissappointed to get knocked out firm underdogs anyway. However a humiliating thrashing ala what villa got wont be good for morale!

Plus it would put Adkins under huge pressure again if we got beat like Villa did.

You think so? Not sure it would be as consequential as its not a league game a few fans would be calling for his head though no doubt

Rest the key players league is far too important is year with it being so tight. Winning the cup does not give you 90odd million guaranteed revenue it gives a shot in the Euro cup and a bit of fame. If we were sitting mid table comfortable then deffo go for it.

The thing is while results may seem better in reality we have only won once in our last seven games. If we get stuffed here then lose to Villa that would be nine games. That no matter how you look at it would not be good. I think it is pretty safe to say if that happens then the positivity of the last couple of results will be un-done.

For me it is all about momentum. Martinez said on the radio just now he will pick his main team (including two new players) because a good cup run can bring confidence to the team as it acts as a distraction which makes it enjoyable.

I'd like to see Reeves at left midfield and Ward Prowse in the middle. Would also like to see Lee playing. Imperative we rest Lambert. I would rest Morgan in case he loses it and gets a red.

i would play our best defence though. Hopefully Clyne is fit, and I would continue with Boris in goal.
