Chelsea Build Up

Of course.....

we want to win EVERY game - don't we Nigel ? So we won't be putting out a really weakened side, bearing in mind half of the bench players aren't anywhere near first team level as we know it to be.

I'd expect to see Jay Rod, Mayuka, JWP and Reeves and Lee in the start eleven + Steven Davis with Chaplow or De Ridder. Even that doesn't sound good enough, but still have RL and Ramirez on the bench.

However, Chelsea's manager might be telling himself that Saints are 17th in the table and won't put out my strongest side, but some of the " regular " bench players plus Torres (in expectation of him scoring a hat-trick.)

but he won't want to taske the chance of losing either - and as they are Cup holders - (aren't they ?.)... he won't want to be too lazy about team selection.

In theory, with their squad... they should be able to put out a " second XI " and still beat us, but who knows? I noticed that Turnbull relaced Cech in goal in their last game injury ???

Chelsea have left a few players out tonight I.e Hazard, Cole, Mata, Cech, Ramires, Mikel etc

Think it is pretty safe to assume they will be back on sat.

As I said before I don't see the logic in playing a weaker team. If you want to give people experience then send them out on loan. As a club our chances of winning anything for the foreseeable future is in the cups. Playing the kids against the current European and fa cup champions would be suicide.

Cup football is unpredictable. Sides like Bradford beat sides like Arsenal and a side in Bradford's position would be delighted with a team like that. There are players there with something to prove even if they aren't the best at the club. The league is beyond Chelsea, so they will go all out for the cup and the benefits of playing a strong team would be minimal. Give the rest a chance and let the first teamers have a rest. As someone else said, a side similar to this one is of similar strength to the one that took Man U to the wire a couple of seasons ago. Lets not forget that Lambert, Morgan and AOC back then weren't at the levels they are now. The 8-0 was a one off, they won't do that to us, even our reserves. Stay strong and we can be in it.

I think a reserve 11 would be weaker than that 11.

Frazer, Jos, Fox, Davis and Mayuka are all better than Butters, Seaborne, Harding, Chaplow and Barnard respectively. We don't have better options than Lambert, Morgan and AOC but there are still suitable replacements available.

Totally disagree.

Firstly recent history shows not just the big clubs get to the final. Cardiff were there a few years ago.

Secondly what benefit would it give to fringe players to play in a game like that? League cup against a lower team I would agree but in a game where they will play some of the best players on the planet and a few of them world cup winners and recent champions league winners there is no point. All we will see is them get destroyed and people saying they are not good enough.

The benefits of playing our strongest side is that they gain another game of playing as a team. Over recent weeks we have improved a lot and have started to gel especially at the back. We need continuity and we more then anyone over recent seasons should know playing a settled side even in the cups creates confidence.

If we want to give people experience then send them out on loan, don't put them in against the reigning champions.... That's like putting a young boxer who has just started in with the champion. He is going to get killed. Won't learn anything other then being under pressure non stop and then eventually getting knocked out. It is the same thing here.

There's also the possibility that the first team would get tonked and by SWF logic, we would be worse than QPR because they beat them earlier. TBH, we can do without a cup run to keep minds focussed on staying up. The benefits of resting key players will be greater than the benefits of giving them match practice since they've already played half a season and we're at the end of a busy Christmas period. After the reserves got tonked by Leeds, we went on a decent run of form. Probably just coincidence, but it does show that the result was pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

Not sure about this. The title is (probably) beyond them but they will go all out for 3rd place which is the last place to go straight into the group stage of the CL. The result against QPR tonight makes it more so.

Hoskins has gone on loan to Stevenage and that's an awful team. Shame making.

Cech and Mikel are injured, won't be playing on Saturday either

just had a look online, there are thousands of unsold seats still, about 4700 in the saints section which is quite a lot considering block 42 and most of 41 have had to move.

Chelsea sold out their 4500 quickly so won't be surprised if there are a few in the home end as well.

£25 is quite a lot to watch our reserves though.

It's not our reserves. £25/28 to watch Saints play the European Champions in the 3rd round of the FA CUp is a decent price.

that depends, think it will be a game between 2 seriously weakened sides myself. To me any Saints sides with the likes of Chaplow and Reeves in it is the reserves.

I sincerely hope we put out our strongest side. When you put in reserve players not only does it weaken you individually, but because players haven't played together it weakens the team as a whole too. A double wammy so to speak.

By and large most of our players haven't played every game every week. They have all been dropped or rested bar one or two. Fonte springs to mind, but centre backs don't do nearly as much running anyway.

Chelsea are likely to play a strong side, Ba will probably start. In constrast we will rest players I would imagine.

Some of you need to remember that whatever happens in this cup match, don't have a tantrum and embarrass yourselves like you did in out last cup game:

Some whining Mongrels amongst that despite playing a clear second string (most of whom clearly have little/no future at Saints anyway. My favourites are these:

we wont get anything against newcastle..we wont get anything at QPR..........lucky to get 3 points in the next month.....

Adkins is simply no where near good enough....he really isnt.

great league manager but this is a step to far too soon for him....I hope he does the decent thing and resigns...he will always be a legend..but he is not doing it for us...

This. The manager is clueless. Adkins out.

we HAVE to change the manager

Why should we play a weakened team? Rest one or two players if they're struggling, but most of our side have had a break of some sort already this year. Let's keep the momentum of our recent run going, rather than throwing the towel in before a ball has even been kicked.

Not saying we should, just an opinion that we will. I think Adkins said something about rotation for the Chelsea game after Arsenal but said that we always put a team out to win. I could be wrong though.

Simon Peach ‏@SimonPeach

Adkins pledged to name a much stronger side against #CFC than that used in the Capital One Cup, saying: "I want to go and win the game."

All well and good but doesn't quite suggest that it'll entirely be the first team. I wouldn't be surprised to see Fox and Hooiveld get a game (Fonte has played every game so far, Luke Shaw could perhaps benefit from a game off). Also I'd quite like to see Rodriguez up top on his own; if he's going to make that spot his own then he needs to get a chance here or there, this is a good shop window to see what he can do against a top side. JWP in midfield would be good too, he's still being nurtured along but a starting spot would be decent. Other than that, a regular line up.

Rodriguez in recent games has played as the striker, with Lambert in a deeper role.

not on Tuesday though. Id like to see us play the same side as Tuesday but with JRod in at the start instead of Lambert, just to see what it brings. Then back to usual against Villa (you have to say that because if not Roger will throw a wobbly ).

Boruc to have another game under his belt in goal, Clyne back at right back, no change at CB, Fox in for Shaw left-back, midfield of Puncheon, Davis, Cork and Guly, Rodriguez up front, with Ramirez playing behind him.

NA sounded bit circumspect on Clyne. Expect Cork to continue at RB if we really want to win.

Judging by Adkins' actual comments I doubt it'll be a true first choice line-up.

"I want to go and win the game against Chelsea, but I also have to be mindful that we have had a run of fixtures that are very close together.

I have to make sure we arrive on the pitch on Saturday full of energy and not risking anyone picking up a serious injury."

my team

Boruc

Clyne

Fonte

Yoshida

Fox

Puncheon

Davis

Cork

Guly

Ramirez

Rodriguez

subs

Davis

Shaw

hooiveld

Reeves

Lambert

Morgan

JWP

From what Nigel said today, it seems unlikely Clyne will play. They'll probably save him for the Villa game and keep Cork at right back or bring Richardson in.

I think we'll line up something like this

abD0YWyae1.jpg

Dunno what's up with the queer shirts tho!

Won't beat Chelsea with that shower. It will probably be the usual first 11 except with Jos in for José and just maybe Davis in for Morgan if Cork isn't at RB. Maybe JRod for RL as well. Jose,Morgan and RL on the bench because they've played the most game time all season.

Where are they?? When I did the online booking thing several days ago, it looked like "hundreds" of tickets left, not thousands, weird!

Spread out everywhere. 100+ seats seem to be unsold in most of the Chapel and Itchen South blocks.

4,034 tickets left.

28,000 sold then. I know Chelsea have sold out their 4,800 tickets but to get up near 30k is a very good turnout I think.

they sold a few yesterday then but you need to add all the unsold corporate areas to that as well. I reckon we'll have about 28,000 -29,000 there with a decent walk up.

No think that's fair enough. Lambert looked tired tues.

News here is that Al Jazeera Sport are showing this game live at 3pm UK. Channel +3

Which (if it happens - they aren't known for accuracy or customer service) will means you should be able to find a live stream.

Also means we can go down the pub again Hooray! And, as Eric can't, we'll probably play well again!
