Chelsea Build Up

Not sure which team to put out for this. On the one hand confidence breeds confidence. On the other we have a faily thin squad and injuries to players like Gaston, Yoshi, Puncheon and Lambert would be a problem. I would rest a few players but not go with a complete reserve look.

Boruc

Frazer - Fonte - Hooiveld - Fox

De Ridder - Davis - JWP - Guly

JRod

Lambert

Something like that.

Seldom have I approached the FA Cup with the kind of "whatever" attitude I have right now.

Anything that even "might" cost us key players or, god forbid, our PL place is way the hell down on my priority list I'm afraid.

Even if it "might" help us to become a better team.

I agree. Home to Chelsea must be a good time to see what the likes of Reeves and Hoskins are capabl e of. Similarly it would be nice to see Lee in the first team again.

Mmm. so you wouldn't give Jack Cork a chance against his old club, then ? He doesn't have to prove anything to me, but I think he'd have something to prove for himself....and show the Chelsea hierarchy..'

Not as part of a second string......give the lad a rest and have him ready to **** Villa.

They have been playing a full strength side in the league cup and as current champions I expect they will do the same here.

We need to play a full strength side or we will get battered. Makes no sense putting kids in against the European champions as they will be on the back foot as soon as the whistle blows. Getting stuffed will not teach them anything.

We have one game in 10 days so plenty of time to rest up after this one.

I think a good cup run would do the team the world of good.

Personally I wouldn't risk Fonte, we have no real backup for him at the moment (except Yoshi). Might be better to play Yoshi and Hooiveld. I would also give Lee a run out.

I hope Shaw plays to make him Cup tied - if anyone really want to buy him in January they would not let him play this game I guess?

I doubt that will even feature in anyones mind when thinking about signing Shaw.

The only person I would consider resting is Lambert. Other than that, full strength.

FA Cup is frankly a distraction this year.

Was glad we got Chelsea, likely to go out either way. After so many games in a short space of time, give the first XI a few days off in prep for Villa next week.

I'm sure some of the elder fans will say 7 days is enough to recover, etc etc and whilst they are probably right, it is what it is, and this is the modern game now - plus I would rather we didn't pick up any extra injuries/suspensions.

If Boruc is going to be the new #1 maybe give him another start to try and gain some confidence.

It will be pretty much a full team

Agree - not many fringe players have earned a chance and we won't want to lose momentum with a 7-0 battering.

They will pick a first choice team as Benitez wants to win it. There is still a week gap to Villa so tiredness won't come into it and re injuries people can get injured any time, in training or games.

Would be a nice game for a new signing to figure but doubt we will see anyone til 25th Jan judging by previous windows.

don't see why we'd rest everyone.

4 Games in 10 days is a lot.

We've looked lacklustre at times during these games. A proper break, will imo do the lads a world of good.

Realistically, we are unlikely to have much joy against an inform Chelsea side, and even less likely to win the competition.

The League needs to be our priority, so why risk anything?

You could say that every season about survival/going for promotion etc.

Possibly.

But I really think that should we survive this year, which I think we will just about, then we should be ok from there on in.

Another summer of strengthening with the increased TV money should see us safe from struggles for a while I think. Especially given the majority of our squad are young, and playing their first season in the Prem - so I think even without additions the team will be stronger next season.

At this point cup runs can be looked at more seriously.

Just my opinion of course.

Yet players often look rusty after a break rather than refreshed. Cork played every game last season, it's fewer games this season too. Far weaker saints sides and smaller squads gave the FA cup games a good go while fighting relegation. Seems a real shame to ditch the cups every season when cup football is the only real chance of success for clubs our size.

All very fair points.

Particularly the rustiness issue. Hate to be Adkins in this situ, probably damned either way.

Entirely disagree.

We aren't expected to beat chelsea anyway even with a full strength side.

A good FA cup run is a distraction.

We have a decent first 11 that has maybe shown that they can compete well in this league, 2 or 3 injuries though and we look a weaker team than Reading so we want to limit the amount of games the likes of Lambert, Shaw, Cork, Yoshida etc play.

You are right though we don't want to get battered so 3 or 4 changes for me, not wholesale. Starts for Jay Rod, Mayuka, JWP, Richardson, then De Ridder, Hoiveld off the bench.

This season is all about staying in the league, if we push on in future season we will then have a go in the cups.

Let's not forget Villa also have a League Cup semi-final next Tuesday so our players are likely to be fresher than theirs regardless.

That game is a real sticky wicket for Villa, do they play a full team with the carrot of a Wembley final but risk tired players/injuries for the crucial game against us, or rest a few players and get done over by League 2 Bradford, denting their low confidence even further.

There are several players who could use some more game time: Boruc, of course, plus J Rod, Fox, Jos, JWP, Richardson, SDR. We could most of these without greatly weakening the side.

Nearly all of them would greatly weaken the side.

Hopefully Clyne would be back and possibly even Lallana? Steve Davis needs game time. Play Guly, Ramirez hasn't played too much. Maybe rest one of out Cork/Schneiderlin. Should still be able to put out a strong team and give this a proper go.

Strongest Lallana rumours were of a 10 week lay off. Even if its less, the Cup game wouldnt be a priority to rush him back for I wouldn't have thought.

Yeah I know unlikely, but nothing remotely concrete re 10 weeks. If fit I'd play him, ideal chance for some match sharpness after a month out.

He was seen at the weekend with Danny Fox and their families, in their local. He was still limping and when asked how long was he out, said " it will be 2/3 weeks at least."

Just for reference this is the team that lost narrowly to Man Utd 2 years ago:

Bart - Butters, Seaborne, Fonte, Harding - AOC, Morgan, Guly, Chaplow - Lambert, Barnard

Putting out a weaker team doesn't necessarily mean a spanking. I'd wager an entirely reserve XI would still be as strong or stronger than that team which played Man Utd in the cup. I'm not in favour of whole sale changes but 4 or 5 fringe players would probably be sensible.

I think a reserve 11 would be weaker than that 11.

4-5-1 / 4-3-3

Boruc

Richardson

Hooiveld

Yoshida

Fox

Chaplow

Davis

Jwp

Mayuka

Lee

Jrod

Does show how short of cover we are at CB.

This is almost what I'm thinking. JRod, Lee, and Mayuka all up in attacking positions. Chappers and JWP in the midfield. Probably Steven Davis as the other, but it could be anyone I don't really care. I don't know what to say about our defense since we seem so thin there, and then I'd have anyone except Boruc in goal. Gazza, Davis, Cropper - all would be fine for me.
