Where are the points going to come from?

We've all got differing opinions on how many points we need but let's say for arguments sake its 40 points... How many do you think we're going to get from the remaining games?

Of course, this is all injury/transfers dependent for not just us but all clubs, but here's our fixtures;

Aston Villa v Southampton Sat 12 Jan 15:00

Southampton v Everton Mon 21 Jan 20:00

Man Utd v Southampton Wed 30 Jan 20:00

Wigan v Southampton Sat 2 Feb 15:00

Southampton v Man City Sat 9 Feb 17:30

Newcastle v Southampton Sat 23 Feb 15:00

Southampton v QPR Sat 2 Mar 15:00

Norwich v Southampton Sat 9 Mar 15:00

Southampton v Liverpool Sat 16 Mar 15:00

Southampton v Chelsea Sat 30 Mar 15:00

Reading v Southampton Sat 6 Apr 15:00

Southampton v West Ham Sat 13 Apr 15:00

Swansea v Southampton Sat 20 Apr 15:00

Southampton v West Brom Sat 27 Apr 15:00

Tottenham v Southampton Sat 4 May 15:00

Sunderland v Southampton Sun 12 May 15:00

Southampton v Stoke Sun 19 May 16:00

By the looks of things, it appears we're going to have to beat a couple of the teams around us, not to mention picking up some points against some of the top teams. Our home fixtures don't look cut 'n' dried either, and we're going to need at least another 4-5 wins from them to stand a chance. That, I suspect, another 1-2 wins away too.

Looking at it, it's daunting but remembering previous seasons in the PL, it can be done if we can evoke that "spirit" again with the current group of players who, I believe, do have a bit of balls about them despite some notable capitulations leading to dropping points.

One further point... has anyone had a look at the other teams run-in's and seen if they've got a harder/easier ride than us?

Hey Crab, I honestly believe we will find the points as we have that spirit that could go to Old Trafford and take 3 points.

If we had a little bit more luck & pressure situations like we must get 3 points (unlike Stoke) then Adkins would of chased it.

I think we should forget who's playing who and focus on the form guide as that shows we are going in the right direction.

I think we have little choice but to take a "ballsy" approach from now on because we are well inside the bottom three based on who we've already played.

But Stoke (away) and Arsenal (home) were examples of how that can - and will - bring us the "unexpected" points we need.

That wasn't a relegation team out there today, not even close, but that's because we refused to be overawed by a powerful opponent, and didn't make any costly individuals errors.

Agreed. In comparison to the likes of Villa, QPR and Reading we're definitely not as bad as them, I'm really quite confident when I say that.

However, until we get the points to overhaul Villa and cut adrift Reading, QPR I'll remain a bit twitchy. I just look at some of those games and think "I bet they underservedly screw us over there" - for example, Villa (a), QPR (h), Reading (a). Y'know, it'll be those kind of games where we dominate but get beaten.

Gah, I really don't want us to be "brave losers"!

In terms of other teams' run-ins, they all have at least 17 more games to play, so will have to face everybody Saints do. For instance Villa have to go to Everton and Arsenal in Feb, host Citeh in March, are away at ManUtd in April, and finish away @ Norwich, home to Chelsea, and away @ Wigan. Reading are away @ Everton, ManUtd, and Arsenal all in March

Also, as the others in the bottom 6/7 have to play each other, they are taking points off each other. I don't think anybody is able to predict how things will pan out, nor how many points will keep a team up, we should just concentrate on each game as it comes - we'll drop stupid points in games we should win, and will pick up 'bonus' points from games we shouldn't.

Enjoy the ride.

Southampton v Stoke Sun 19 May 16:00 1 point if safe, but we'll get 3 if we need them to stay up

We'll get another 20-22 I think. I think that will be enough. Reading and QPR look bolt ons to go down. We'll be slugging out with Villa for 18th place I think. I hope Wigan continue their bad form but I think they've just got enough about them to stay up.

Over the last two games we've shown a depth of character that I've wondered whether we possessed. In some ways, Guly (of all people) has personified that; he's had a habit of drifting but he's been 100% committed in both games.

When you start on the second half of the season in the bottom five, character ends up being as important as skill, and I think we have both.

Hey Pilchards... FWIW, I don't think it'll be 40 points, but I plucked that figure as I think it'll guarantee safety. I think it might even be as low as 32-35... I just hope if that's the case, we've got another 18-20 points in us

someone published stats. a while back and often 36...can be normally enough (as long as there are 3 teams worse than you). There was one occasion when the fourth team (from bottom) got 40 points.
