Lighthouse Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Reads the game so well and made some crucial interceptions tonight. Knows when to play it and when to stick it in the car park. I know a lot of people want a new CB in January and I'd tend to agree, however I wouldn't be dropping either of our current pair on current form. I was convinced that cross in from the left on about 88 minutes would be tapped in but Yoshi was there to stick it out for a throw.
Saint Garrett Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Has been superb after a few shakey performances when he joined. Reads the game superbly!
hypochondriac Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Has really settled well. I fancy us to finish above Villa which means we should stay up and a big reason is down to the defence.
View From The Top Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 He's getting better and better. Thought him awesome at Stoke.
Ewell Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 He's getting better and better. Thought him awesome at Stoke. Totally agree. He is calm on the ball, does not panic under pressure, strong in the air, reads the game well but also knows when to row Z it. I think he is a great signing and he looks a natural leader as well.
Smirking_Saint Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 No no no this cant be right, he is terrible, will never make it etc etc
syd_barrett_saint Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Was good today, but I thought Fonte was even better. It's a good partnership that should only improve :-)
austsaint Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Composed, calm, skilful and has courage too. Seems to have developed a great understanding with Jose as well. Would be hard on either to be replaced by a new acquisition on current form.
Miltonaggro Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Great today and a very good footballer. As back up / mix up to our current pairing it would be nice to sign a beast in the mould of Jaidi under the age of 25...
RobM Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 A calm head, good footballing brain and solid performer - everything you need in a CB. Turning out to be the signing we all hoped he would.
dvaughanwilliams Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 I think that he's learnt from the mistakes he's made and in the game today, he cleared long when we were under pressure, but played short passes when they were on. Wins a lot in the air and seems to be very strong. I do think that we need more cover at CB though, if Yoshi or Fonte get injured, I don't have confidence in Hooiveld and we have no-one else.
jawillwill Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 What about van Persie to Man United? That has got to be a contender.
Avenue Saint Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 They all will keep getting better... Thoughtful buys! Fonte and Yoshida are striking up quite a serious looking mean partnership.
Sherminator Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Fonte, yoshida. Hoiveld + AN Other and we're staring to shape up in this position.
Doctoroncall Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Just looked at the table on the beeb where they show the recent form. The last 10 games Saints have gained 14 points, only 2 loses and 10 goals conceded whereas the first 10 gained 4 points with 8 loses and 28 goals conceded. It's a question of how much is down to getting better while in the Premier League than against easier opposition. Villa, Everton and United the next three will tells us more.

There is little doubt that Yoshida and Fonte are forming a decent partnership. It's no coincidence that when Fonte plays alongside Yoshida he looks better. For whatever reason last season I never felt Fonte looked comfortable alongside Hooliveld and this reflected in his performances. Of course Hooliveld was popular last season because he scored a few goals and clapped the fans after every game it in reality as a defender IMO he wasn't up to much, a competent championship defender but no more than that. I said this many times season and this and was told I was wrong. Yoshida has proven to be a good defender and a good signing. We certainly do need another centre back but to get better than we have we are going to need to bring some real quality in, which can only be a good thing.
Bucks Saint Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Yep, top player now, despite all the bedwetters saying he was cr#p early doors
Crab Lungs Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 yep, top player now, despite all the bedwetters saying he was cr#p early doors again.
CaneNero Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Yoshida and Fonte have come on so far from the 6-1 defeat in September, quite outstanding!
shurlock Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 I've not seen any criticism of him? Plenty have -people were even moaning about his performance at Fulham even though he was excellent there.
NickG Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 I've not seen any criticism of him? Usual negative crowd, two you could guess who, saying mistake to sign him, panic buy, only signed for commercial reasons etc. They are almost always wrong with their assessments and predictions
manji Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Yep, top player now, despite all the bedwetters saying he was cr#p early doors Thats why they are bedwetters.
Greenridge Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 No no no this cant be right, he is terrible, will never make it etc etc Be nice if a few put their hands up, there were plenty of nay-sayers when it comes to Yoshida. He's settling-in now and hopefully continues in the same manner.
View From The Top Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 There was always the the danger of him being totally off the pace when he arrived into the speed of the EPL. It's taken time to adjust but he clearly has. Perhaps if we hadn't left it so late to get a CB in we'd have picked up more points early on.
farawaysaint Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 A few games ago he was rubbish.... Oh, I see this knee jerk has already been pointed out on the thread? Perhaps we can now move on and discuss him on his merits?
Smirking_Saint Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 I've not seen any criticism of him? I suppose its difficult to tell when you follow the same crowd
Glasgow_Saint Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 I suppose its difficult to tell when you follow the same crowd I am a solo comedian, i dont follow anyone? I equally try to annoy everyone, i dont discriminate
Gambol2K9 Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 I'd hold my hands up and say that I'd all but written him off until lately. He's massively improved over the last few games.
Tom28 Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Would say Clyne has been out best buy but Yoshida has been superb lately.
pingwing Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Had another great game today, really knew what to do against their "MASSIVE THROUGH BALL FOR EVERYTHING" tactic (hoof on the floor). He's improved a lot and really gotten into the CB role (not so convinced as a lb or rb where he has been played for the first few games and struggled)
CanadaSaint Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Yoshida is arguably one of the players we can least afford to lose because that would reunite the problematic Fonte/Jos partnership. Either Jos or Font with Yoshida would work but not, I suspect, Fonte and Jos without Yoshida. And Fonte was superb again today. His game has improved night and day since he was paired with Yoshida.
Junior Mullet Posted 1 January, 2013 Posted 1 January, 2013 Most improved player as the season has gone on. Looks the part now.
Golden Balls Posted 2 January, 2013 Posted 2 January, 2013 I really didn't rate him until the last few games. My opinion on him has now completely changed. He's been brilliant and I'm very pleased to be proved wrong.
Benali Saint Posted 2 January, 2013 Posted 2 January, 2013 I like Yoshida, been impressed with him for a while. If I have 1 critisism of him it would be that his distribution can be poor

Totally agree. Fonts is definitely a premier league class defender. Has has to learn the hard way but very good. I like him as skipper too. I think his upshot in form has taken so long as he had to take a season to get used to his long hair gone lol
Window Cleaner Posted 2 January, 2013 Posted 2 January, 2013 I like him as skipper too. Strange that Morgan gives the team talk in the pre-kick off huddle though.
