Artur Boruc

I hope people have learned that you can't write off a player that early. Especially one as good as Boruc.

Good point. Looks the business. Don't want to contemplate it just yet, but worth 'tieing him and a few others in' should we go down. If we do this I envisage a quick return to the Premier league.

I think he may not just be the great keeper he was.

We may have signed a player right on the peak of his career under the radar. Great swoop even if at a late date.

Shouts about how he should've played all games: that low cross he assuredly caught in the 2nd half is the proof of how his fitness has improved from those early days. He started playing when he should've done it, and now he's back on track he is the keeper we will need to take us to another level.

Superb today - proper goalkeeping performance, held everything with calm authority.

Should have played every game as soon as he joined the club.

Even when he was 2 stone overweight and had zero match sharpness?

We tried that and he was no better than KD/Gazza

Boruc was top drawer today. Having a top class keeper in goal is so so important in the context of a football season, such a shame he wasn't played every game from his arrival. Good to have a bit of a character in the team too, like the way he slaps himself before kickoff and his little dance before goal kicks, nutter.

Had to laugh at Suarez giving him a load of gob towards the end, bet he wouldn't be that brave away from the pitch.

Yes...I think he still would of done a better job than Gazza..who played the majority. Its all speculation anyway...he might not have...lol

Watch Defoe's goal when he chips it over Boruc earlier in the season and take note of just how far out Boruc is with his angles. ;) He was no better back then than Gazza or KD. I don't get a few posts on this thread where people think just because he is somewhere near his best now it means he would have been when he had no match sharpness or fitness.

But that was then and this is now. He's a completely different player now. He's in shape, match sharp and could possibly turn out to be our best keeper since Niemi.

Agree with all of this. He was poor at first, technically poor, lacked confidence and made silly mistakes. But he then started showing signs of why he came with such a good reputation and now, today especially, he looks superb in every sense.

It has been a long time since we had a keeper that didn't make the stadium panic every time the ball went there way.

Today Boruc was a very safe pair of hands.

Fair assessment but going back to that game he had a great reaction save at the start of the game against Lennon. Gazzs positioning was very suspect too but dont think Boruc would of fumbled in freekicks like against Norwich.

All in the past now, and he is looking a top keeper, sign him up for another year!

I'm glad that this thread has been bumped. It's entirely justified. Once again, Boruc has done a great job between the sticks.

What I like Boruc is that he's the perfect mix of "give a f*ck" and "don't give a f*ck". You can see he's passionate about winning. He really doesn't give a f*ck about who the opposition is. Kelv = superb servant and all that, but looks almost wracked by paralysis compared to Artur's "who are ya" attitude.

To be fair, I think Kelvin was a good goalkeeper, but couldn't hand;e the high intensity of the Premier league. Boruc has that lovely touch of arrognace, commanding the box, instills confidence in his defence and defiance of the opposition forwards.

ALL good teams need a good goalkeeper.

I'd just like to say I very much appreciated him reviving 2009's grey goalkeeper socks and breaking out last season's grey keeper shirt today as well. An unexpected bonus for my kit geekiness thanks presumably to Phil Dowd's refusal to let him wear all purple or (more sensibly) all black.

loved his incident with Suarez which got the latter booked. cheeky fella

Suarez isn't allowed to prevent the keeper releasing the ball into play, that's a booking. Also, every time he even accidentally delays the keeper, the keeper gets another 6 seconds to release the ball anyway. So Suarez really helped us waste time at the end.

Just has that air about him that says to the defence "don't worry if the ball goes past you because I've got it covered but if you mess up, I'm going to go ******* mental at you" which I like in a gk!

That was one of the things that made Schmeichel a great keeper - he really kept the defenders on their toes...

I love the way he goes up to each player before the game and makes sure they're ready. I presume he's saying something like 'don't try and I'll kill you'. Might be why Mayuka has disappeared off the face of the planet recently. Didn't try hard enough in training.

Absolutely agree that we must sign him up. Best keeper since Niemi.

.. goalies need a special type of confidence...as they can't go out and get involved in the outfield play, but then suddenly have to get into action in a split second.

Whilst other players have to avoid getting their bodies - especially arms - in the way, whereas goalies frequently get blamed for goals when it is too often the fault of sloppy defence work.

NOTE: when Lawrie McMenemy signed England's goalie Peter Shilton in 1982...( one of the best keepers in the World at that time ).....Saints conceded 18 goals in their first 7 League games.

very few of those can be attributed to " Shilton errors ". Likewise..Boruc can't really be blamed for many of the goals we've conceded in his current run of games.

Stats. can show that since Boruc got the no.1 spot....the most regular CB partnership has been Yoshida and Hooiveld.. and we conceded 12 goals in 8 games. (incl. 4 at Newcastle)

whereas...the worst problems have come when Clyne was out injured and we were forced to use Cork and Yoshida at RB ... and when Fox has been on the pitch in the absence of Shaw.

the intervening games we've had poor results were due more to the bad finishing, (not bad defending).. especially in those games where we have a greater ratio of goal attempts - but failed to score.
