Yoshida becoming this seasons Hooiveld ?

He was out of position today, but he wasn't bad. His weakness is distribution, both on the floor and with his head - it's getting better, but it's still his weakness - and from a full back position that's thrown into the spotlight a little more.

But he reads the game as well as anyone, positions himself well and cuts out danger. He's an international level player in those regards, and is growing as the team is growing.

For me, I'll be honest, the jury has been out as his distribution does my head in, and causes us problems - but it's something that seems to be getting better game by game, and let's not forget...he's only 23!

Speaking about Hooiveld, anyone dare to speculate on his near future (i.e. after 1st January)? Getting him to start seemed a cheeky and reasonable option given Stoke's bully boys, but Jones took the **** out of that ability and him overall by simply being faster and more clever for their first goal, where Jos couldn't even get the challenge right. He also decided to have an angry moan at one of the midfielders after that, something he seems to enjoy way too much for my liking everytime we concede.

I thought Jos had a fine game If I'm honest, a good pick for a game against their strike force and the obvious aerial bombardment. I wouldn't look to move him on in January, that's for sure.

I think if we bring in a new top class CB, we're sorted in that area.

I'm not a big fan and will take some convincing after some very, very average displays IMO, but having said that he's certainly improved in the last few weeks, getting tighter and actually making his presence felt. He's been one of our better players in the last three or four games. I slated him for being far too passive, so that tends to have the right effect!

Fonte has been equally good mind you and Jos was outstanding today having been thrown in at the deep end after a long period without a game. As I said, he can play at this level and just needed to find his feet. Maybe I should have listened to myself when considering Yoshida.

I have to say that distribution selection is terrible at times, although often its the midfield failing to provide him with an option. I still feel that our two original centre backs were unfairly lambasted by fans early on when in fact it was fullbacks and midfield that left them exposed. We've tightened up as a unit and the CB's have had far less to do (today apart). Arsenal will pose a different threat completely than the likes of Fulham and Sunderland.

2 on 1 against Shaw led directly to the goal. Guly or whoever went missing, so yes he was spot in to moan at someone in midfield for not doing their job. Not sure Jos could be blamed. Great finish.

Spot on. They were almost 3 players against Shaw there and he had no one to cover behind. Guly was closest but I think they positioned themself for the long throw when Stoke made a quick short throw.

I notice Ageuro took Bassong to pieces today for his goal. Plenty on here stating how we should have signed him and plenty of others calling for Jos to be hung drawn and quartered when another Man City did similar to him earlier in the season. I'm not saying Bassong isn't decent, I'm really not sure, but perhaps Jos wasn't as bad as some liked to think.

The fact is we, like all teams will concede goals especially against the top sides and CBs and keepers will be in the firing line. It doesn't mean they are **** if goals go in. Teams concede goals.

Yoshida's great! He's mobile and determined and he reads it really well. Strong tackler and excellent at holding up an opponent when 1 on 1 against. Looks genuinely pleased to be here and loving playing for us. Good communicator and works well with Fonte. Weakness is he's not great in the air (though he spoils very well) and his distribution can be a bit hit and miss (Sunderland's goal came from his aimless hoof upfield).

All in all not a bad signing at all. Hooiveld did OK today too; for me a decent GK is the number one priority over a new CB(s).

while I am at it, Huth is lauded on here, yet if Jos had made the mistakes he made today (gifting us at least one goal) he would have been crucified on here.

Not sure why, Huth was terrible today, Keon summed it up with the "looked like he had been in a car crash" quote, describing Lamberts performance against him.

Oh and Yohshida is quickly developing into a very intelligent CB, Jos is good at the basic things, just not when it is against width more than anything else. The combination of Fonte and Yoshida is now working very well which is the important bit.

WOW! not sure which Yoshida everyone else watches. Yes he does some defensive things well, but often makes mistakes and his distribution in the air and the deck has caught us out and led to us conceding far to many times! I will dissapointed if he is not replaced in January, I think Jose's up turn in form in the last 10 or so games has helped to cover up for Yoshida's short fall.

I may have missed that our last defensive meltdown was a 4-1 defeat at West Ham, where he started at CB.

I may have missed that his poor positioning and awareness cost us a win and almost a draw against Fulham at home in a match that we were never going to lose control of.

I may have missed 2 ridiculous lunges into Van Persie and Tevez against City and United.

I may have missed 2 own goals in about 5/6 PL starts, all due to poor position/lack of ability.

But most importantly, I haven't missed the clear collective and individual improvement of our back 4 since he was dropped. A thing I've noticed about our back 4 is that they never seem composed when Jos is playing. With Shaw-Yoshida-Fonte-Clyne, anyone watching us would never tell we just came from the worst defensive record in the early stages of a PL season. Coincidence? I don't think so, and today and West Ham and most games in the middle prove this right I think.

I really don't understand our fans sometimes. Fonte was (and if something happens will still be) given a lot more stick than Hooiveld ever was and he committed less mistakes. In fact, it was the Portuguese that was hung drawn and never Jos, even in the early stages of this season. Yes he was good last season, but unlike Fonte in L1 (where we saw his defending potential), I think fan opinion and rating of him was highly blurred by his goals tally. I think Fonte's mistakes when he played with Hooiveld had a lot to do with him gambling to cover up for Jos's "defend anything frantically as it approaches the final third" approach, which was ok in the CCC because it's all about direct physical football down there (and I felt this happened last season where Jos was a hero for most).

He is not good enough, and like Hammond, Sharp and Chaplow would've joined the regulars clearance list if it wasn't for our questionable transfer market business.
