John Boy Saint Posted 30 December, 2012 Share Posted 30 December, 2012 I have to say, despite a draw from the teeth of victory, I really enjoyed today's game. In the car on the way up we all agreed we would take a draw come final whistle. 3-1 up at half time was a bit surreal against a team who had only conceded 4 at home all season. The one thing about the match was that it was a real game, Clattenburg despite his card happy attitude prior to his Chelsea problem just let both sides slug it out. That said when is Rickie ever going to get protection from referees and linesmen, once again he took a battering most shocking was Huth locking Rickies arms behind his back preventing him from moving. Shame about the draw but anyone who loves football cannot deny their equaliser was an absolutely stunning strike.
pingwing Posted 30 December, 2012 Share Posted 30 December, 2012 Train back from Stoke was fun, few happy enough saints fans (didn't get chatting to the London saints group again sadly) but it was nice to come away from another away knowing if we put our minds to it we are easily good enough for the prem now. Oh and if we had a player like Huth we would have a terrible disciplinary record and the ultimate boo-boy. Dreadful player today, no idea why he would be better than any of our 3 cb;s. Re Guly's miss: I tell you now. Had the ball ended in the net, then the ex pros on MOTD tonight would be telling you just what a difficult skill that is to do. Alas, it was off target and the forum posters can use the missed chance as another stick to beat him with. FWIW, I was more disappointed with the initial shot from Rodriguez, which was right at Begovic, when either side would have made Guly's chance irrelevant. Yep, 100% spot on. Very few players in the world could smash a spinning, half volly with their weaker foot into the net, off balance against the spin of the ball. Everything was against Guly to put that away and he was only a couple of yards out. Was a good effort from him (and his best game of this season, though the previous 2 have had even better games from him). Rodriguez should have really buried it but its one of those he's young and learning moments, shame its a bit premier league moment. He will learn and learn quickly to keep his place. Roger Posted 30 December, 2012 Share Posted 30 December, 2012 Looking back again guly was at fault for first goal and his jump with crouch at the end was shades of Pompey.
St Marco Posted 30 December, 2012 Share Posted 30 December, 2012 First time I been to Stoke so very happy to come away with a point. I thought their fans were pretty decent and the ones I talked to around the city were friendly and good natured. The game itself was really a game of two halves. First half was maybe the best I have seen us play this season. Second half we were hanging on for dear life. Watching our game on motd and seeing Fonte do a bit of volley ball I think we can count ourselves a bit lucky. Which makes a nice change! All in all was a good trip and hopefully get to make it again next year!

pingwing Posted 30 December, 2012 Share Posted 30 December, 2012 Looking back again guly was at fault for first goal and his jump with crouch at the end was shades of Pompey. Should have supported Shaw more for their first yes, which he did for the rest of the game, sadly leaving Jos mostly alone on Jones. Got the balance mostly right after the first few mins, shame it needed a goal to work it out. Jump with Crouch though, mad stigma he is stuck with. The Pomp goal he was never going to get to even if he had jumped, it was going in unless we had a keeper behind it. Guly still on the motm list just for really playing outstandingly well in a position he hardly ever ends up in. Put in a good shift out there against West Ham too and is back up for Lallana out there. Today he really made a difference as it got Lambert in the middle a lot more to play off Rodriguez (and the other way round). Without that we would have been stuck like boxing day with lopsided attacks and predictable passing.
Stanley Saint Posted 30 December, 2012 Share Posted 30 December, 2012 Guly's miss sounded terrible on the radio, but when I saw it on Match of the Day I thought it was harder than it sounded. The ball came to him at speed and he had no time to adjust. Messi would have scored it, but plenty of others would have done the same as Guly. Ricky but him through and all he had to do was slide it past the keeper. He had more time. I'm not looking for scape-goats, sh1t happens.

corky morris Posted 30 December, 2012 Share Posted 30 December, 2012 Exactly. JayRods shot was on target, Guly's was not. If he had side footed it he would have controlled it better. That said Guly had a decent game. Because the keeper made a good save?
Colbury Posted 30 December, 2012 Share Posted 30 December, 2012 Looking back again guly was at fault for first goal and his jump with crouch at the end was shades of Pompey. Sigh. You clearly weren't there then as he was doubling up on Kenwyne with Jos which he did at every set piece meaning someone else should have gone and pressed. ExSt Peter Saint Posted 30 December, 2012 Share Posted 30 December, 2012 Got back from the game yesterday, obviously, but having watched the highlights (which didn't really give a true reflection IMO) and thought about it, I still think we were much too negative and played right into their hands for the last half hour. Ok, maybe a few players ran themselves into the ground (and had the sh1te kicked out of them by the Stoke players/thugs) but we just didn't even try to keep the ball and build anything, were just hoofing it forward and waiting for the next high ball in with them having FOUR big forwards up there trying to get on the end of it. I really thought we were excellent in the first half and the way Shaw drew the defenders away from Guly to give him space to cause damage from the left was working really well. Lambert was immense and the Stoke fans from our family thought he was by far the best player on the pitch. Lucky not to concede a penalty, but should have scored more when we were on top. They really missed Shawcross, according to their fans, but who knows if we were playing that well whether he would have made that much difference. It was a good day out and I'm still very croaky today after singing my heart out and shouting at Clattenburg to give our players a bit of protection. Thought he did his job really well and was my MoTM (and yes that was a really hard halkf chance at speed that he missed. My frustration with that was more on the lines he would have become a hero IF he had buried it. Never mind) Was an amazing evening to be in the pub with all the different games on all around us. Brilliant evening of football to watch.

Turkish Posted 31 December, 2012 Share Posted 31 December, 2012 good to see someone else thinks guly was motm He was excellent i thought. Good on the ball in the first half and then got back and provided the support of the full back we've often been missing this season. Really felt for him as when he missed that chance it gave all the helmets a chance to attack him again. Which they are doing.
DT Posted 31 December, 2012 Share Posted 31 December, 2012 We shouldn't blame Guly too much for that miss because Rodriguez' attempt to score immediately before was pretty pathetic. lambert would have buried it.
