Drop lambert? Wake up

Take this how you will but I was drowning my sorrows in the Guide Dog pub last night post match and got talking to a guy who goes home and away. He is a taxi driver (yes I know they have a reputation) but is a serious mature sort of guy not prone to making things up. He was adamant he took Rickie to Sot’on airport on Thursday for a flight to Newcastle to hold talks with the Bar Codes. Just passing on pub gossip but he swore blind it was true.

I'd like to say I am surprised by this and call you a liar but I know for sure that they tried to flog him in the summer so it doesn't surprise me if it did happen.

That will be all over the transfer gossip columns soon then and in the Echo tomrrow.

If we've already said we won't sell him in this window, why would we let him talk to Newcastle?

The only way I could see this deal going through is if a deal is sorted for Hooper. Even then I think it would be a massive mistake.

Not doubting what you were told Duncan, but if it was true, surely a journo or agent would have picked up on it. The club would probably want to set up some sort of auction.

Does Lambert have a real agent? Or is he just represented by someone in his family circle or a law firm that negociates ?

Seems to me that many of our players don't use traditional agents now so transfer rumours don't surface so easily.

Not doubting you for one moment but selling Lambert full stop would be bad enough, selling him to one of our relegation rivals is simply unthinkable! Quite apart from the fact he’s one of our most effective players, the bloke’s a talisman and to lose him now would completely fracture the fan base

Not saying its not true but it seems weird that a player of Rickie's importance to us would give out that kind of information to some random cabbie. I mean I wouldnt.

Quite. I mean whenever i am off to a confidential business meeting the first thing i do is to make sure the cabbie knows all about it. tell the cabbie then it NEVER gets out - thats how it works, isn't it?

Ditto. I know that one club that were in for him in the summer would still love to have him on board now, but they're sure he'd go to a bigger team than them. If he doesn't go over January then I think he'll definitely be off in the summer. And if we don't replace him properly, we're f*cked; with the current squad we're a much worse side without him IMO.

If you were a taxi driver and a Saints fan and Rickie Lambert gets in and asks for Southampton Airport I am sure you would at least manage to elicit where he was going from him and I am pretty sure Lambert wouldn't bother that much in revealing his destination. I just checked last night's conversation with "Lets be avenue" who knows this "taxi driver" well and was there listening. This guy has never come up with a story like this before. RL also mentioned to him that Villa had made a bid and so had Leicester but he had hoped Liverpool would come in.

Three months ago I would have laughed at this story but after the bust up between Lambert and Adkins post the Villa game I think on the balance of probability the story is more likely to be true than false. Hence me mentioning it on here. Up to you if you believe it - personally I think it would be mad to let him go to a rival club.

There are a couple of cabbies who post here I think, perhaps they've heard the story on the cabby's grapevine as well.

Sorry fitz. We all know the only stories allowed like this are postive ones otherwise this story will be dismissed as bulls*it, even though rumours of a fall out between Lambert and SFC are very strong and that he was available in the summer.

Only problem I have with this story is trying to understand why Rickie would fly to Newcastle, when Newcastle were down south the following day. A quick drive along the M/A27 and he could have met up with Pards and not aroused any suspicion.

I doubt he would hold negotiations/talks with the kit man

It's unlikely he'd go all the way there as well for any initial talks, you'd usually have most parties linking up somewhere like London (esp. with the distance between soton and newcastle). The fact that a player is signing for Newcastle for e.g, doesn't mean they have to go there for any initial talks. Football is a country-wide game, and agents/club rep's often travel around to talk to prospective targets.

video-conference from the comfort of his lounge for initial talks more than, likely, then again wouldn't Saints have had to agree to that already ? If he went there (which I sincerely doubt) then the processus must be advanced. Thought he was on the video footage in the build up interview though, could be wrong and that's done when? Thursday ?

edit; Didn't realise that there are 3 flights a day Soton-Toon, do they fill up ?

He'll be gone in the summer.

Probably not far from the truth, there's no smoke without fire and all that. Too many of these rumours for it to just be made up, obviously there's some sort of idea within the club that we've surpassed his ability and Rodriguez is being pushed to replace him.

I've not a single doubt that he'll be gone. Heard to much, from separate sources, some of whom are involved in NPC clubs & some at Saints, to believe otherwise.

I can understand what he wants & why the club says no but I'd keep him regardless but what would a mere fan know?

Sounds a bit like a Grant Holt situation developing here.

A 'rumour' combined with a story from a taxi driver. I'm sold based on that conclusive evidence.

That is a fair point - I will chase this but I remain sure the guy is telling it straight.

the response is pretty obvious, Pardew doesn't do the hiring and firing and he who does probably didn't travel with the Toon side.

Perhaps there were facilities to be looked at or houses or something. There are tons of reasons why he wouldn't want to go to Brighton to see Pardew.

Players trained on Thursday. Anyone taking a flight so close to a game without authorisation would be in huge breach of club discipline rules.

If the club knew I would be equally surprised, Adkins said we would not be interesting in selling Lambert and there is certainly no logical reason to let him go in January.

Here's a thought, perhaps he was just going home to Liverpool and thought he'd be a wag and spread a bit of BS. Scousers do that sometimes, it amuses them. Thursday after training, week-end off, sort of belated New Year with his family like. Then again he was on the bench yesterday so scrub the week-end off.

I can see him being sold but what doesn't sit right with me is the fact that we be would selling him to what is effectively a rival relegation candidate.....what's the point in selling one of your best players to a team you are trying to finish above?

Perhaps the management feel that selling them Lambert would help us to achieve that. A very Machiavellian approach I admit but I'm not sure that Machiavelli doesn't have his adepts on our "board". If they buy Lambert they might not buy someone better if you catch my drift..

I'm quite sure that he won't be sold in Jan' & he certainly wouldn't be sold to relegation rivals.
