Stoke 3 Saints 3 - Post Match Reactions

Entertaining game but after being 1-3 up at such a difficult ground and them being a player down it is a loss of 2 points rather than what would usually be a point won at the Britannia.

I'm afraid that the substitutions cost us again, a frustrating mistake for Nigel after such a great work with the initial tactics and team selection. Not because of who came in, but the timing and what they meant. While Fox for Shaw was fairly routine, bringing Richardson in effectively meant we were a man down upfront for a poisonous counter-attack. Stoke defend as a unit so unless they're given players to worry about they will send more players forward and giving them yards to attack is poison.

Great play from Guly but I just hope we don't remember that miss later on. Two bittersweet away days if you ask me.

Very frustrating game. To get 3-1 up against 10 men, we let ourselves be bullied by a 10 man Stoke team that had shown very little quality. We lacked a leader out there, no-one stepped up and took control.

Furthermore, after all the fuss about our passing football, how many passes did we string together against a 10 man Stoke side? Very few.

Most frustrating thing, I thought Stoke were terrible, forget all the comparisons with West Ham etc, I haven't seen a team play that level of basic long ball, percentage, win corners and throw in football since watching Sheff utd or Wimbledon in the early mid 90s, combined with moaning and abusing the ref for anything that went against them, proper poxy small time club and it's very rare for me to comment on another club like that.

Guly made one goal, was excellent defensively (moreso than any other attacking player in recent games), put in more dangerous crosses than anybody else but Puncheon and without knowing hard-facts, I'd say he covered more ground than anybody else too. Without him we wouldn't have gotten a point. He did not cost us the game.

Missed a sitter with an open goal which would have killed the game and secured three points. No one has said he was S**t just he nissed a sitter

Right train back from stoke now and some time to take it in.

On the one hand 2 points dropped in the short term, long term one point wouldn't have other wise seen us get.

Guly, other than the defensive laps for their first, man of the match! The had no answer and drugged with him out wide. We were excellent first half, doing what we do as ell as any team in the league, pressing them in their half. After their 2nd we stopped and tried to hold out for 3-2, which has and never will work. Shame but Adkins has to learn from that now!

They were a lot better after the sending off and playing 5-0-4, mostly because we let them and assumed the still didn know about punch. Adkins should have known to keep the ball from them an pressure for a 4th. Still a point is a point.

Again stars of today, Guly, cork, morg, fonte and yoshida. All really good hard fought games. Stand out problem kelvin! No command of the area came for everything regardless

Of how stupid it was and generally showed why we needed a prem keeper today badly.

6 - 0 - 3 because we withdrew a forward so they withdrew a defender - not rocket science unless you are SFC

You 100% sure it was a sitter? Not had the chance to see a replay yet, but watching it in real time, thought it came to him at an awkward height and pace on his wrong foot. Decent chance yes, not sure yet if it could be classed as a "sitter".

1 point gained. Did brilliantly to forge a lead, but were unlucky to concede to a wonder strike.

The ability to unlock teams is what gives is a great chance in games even if we go behind,

Any point away from home is good and after a poor start to the season we've become a very competitive Premiership outfit.

I think we will stay up, happily.

Yes it was a wonder-strike, but why did he get the chance to strike it? Because we kept backing off, kept giving them opportunities to do exactly what they want.

I agree we'll stay up, but it'll be bloody tight.

people forget that we have only just been promoted, yet we are more than competing at this level now, which we had no divine right to do so. We gave a well established Premiership side the run around for an hour today. Lots of positives if you want to see them. We are so much better organised than the WBA debacle. We need to keep improving. We should expect some defeats in the next few weeks against the better sides, but we might just surprise one or two too.

We certainly look better organised and stronger in spirit and body.

Not sure what that means? No-one is saying we have a divine right to do so. And pretty much every team that has ever been promoted to the Premier League have at least competed at this level apart from a couple of obvious exceptions.

You're absolutely spot on fella. Have been saying the same.

We now compete in every single game. We're in a much better place than we ever were.

Before the game I thought we would get trounced 5-1.

But we were brilliant, we battled hard and proved to be more than good enough to deal with their aerial bombardment. They're a team of beasts, only two of their players are below 6 foot, and we really gave them the run around in the first half.

Morgan looked excellent, Guly was superb - apart from the sitter he did not put a foot wrong. Luke Shaw again had a great game and Jay Rod and Lambert linked up well. Also YOSHIDA, won everything in the first half.

Yes, it's two points dropped - BUT did anyone even see us getting a point, against Stoke away? I doubt it, they are a seriously tough outfit.

What this will do is give the team confidence to go away to places and attack, and get points. On other days we will hold onto leads, and get three points, whether it is away to Man Utd, Chelsea, Spurs, we are going to beat one of the big teams at some point and get three points that we won't expect. While we can have confidence that now we can get points away to any side if we play like that.

Yes, this season will be touch and go, every fixture is tough, none have "3 points" written all over them. So we will battle for each point and whether we go down, or go up. Lets enjoy the ride, we are competing and are in the mix with 7/8 other teams trying to stay up.

The constant negativity on this board is annoying, we were always battling to stay up the majority of the time when we were in the Premiership, it was mostly individual brilliance by Le Tissier and later Pahars that kept us up. We have spent money, and we are getting better as the season goes on. We are picking up points away from home.

It's a shame we lost to Sunderland, and didn't beat Norwich, in some games we have looked flat, but now Adkins will use the likes of Richardson, Guly, Chaplow, Mayuka, Jay Rod, Fox, Shaw and perhaps Ben Reeves to keep the squad fresh and hungary.

Positives:

Yoshida, superb throughout -

Guly, shows he can do it on a cold day at Stoke, that proves he can do it anywhere when he on his game.

Spiderman/Cork - Both had great games against a tough physical outfit.

Jay Rod: Didn't score but was pulling their defence about and starting to look like he will step up to his price tag.

Shaw: Looks mature beyond his years.

I honestly think we are a better side than Villa, Reading, QPR, Wigan and possibly on the same level as Fulham/Newcastle. We are picking up the points and looking steady. We will lose more games throughout the season, but I think now, lets all have some faith in the team and Adkins. Even if we go down I want him to stay.

Having seen Gulys chance it really wasn't a sitter. In fact I'd say the chance for Rodriguez leading up to it was easier, only had to put it either side of the keeper on his favoured foot 15 yards out.

Agree I think a big thing is being made of that.ken Jones missed more of a sitter and fonte was lucky to get away with a clear handball .

great game of football, and happy with a [point

i think we finally got the good side of some fairly dubious decisions

slightly disappointed nigel didnt bring on gaston on 90 minutes for lambert or j rod and just let him play in the hole as the extra man for the last 7 mins

Crouch hand ball in laying it off for their stunning winner, not mentioned.

Yeah, bit annoyed about that.

Have to say though that all it required was Richardson to run it into the corner in injury time rather than hit it over Gulys head and we'd probably have held out.

Think it's best if we stop worrying about it after tonight though, there's a LOT to get frustrated about from today and if we dwell on it it'll probably lead to ulcers.

Davis should have done better with Upson's goal. He looked slow and cumbersome with his parry from Crouch at the end. Lucky it didn't fall to them. He is not a premier league keeper.

What that bit of pinball with 2 handballs, bouncing all over the place and then through a crowd of players. Some would be saved and some are seen late. Believe me I used to play in goal.

Good save at the end.

I do have to say all in all, a draw was probably about right.

Also looked like Crouch may have handballed it before the equaliser. Didn't hear Pulis mention that. Typical Skate always moaning about decisions going against them. If the guy had connected with Corks leg it could have been badly broken. Referee was right on the spot and that's why he gave a red. The intent was there despite missing the target. Also think that KD looked suspect. We still need a top class goalie I think.

Glad someone else noticed it. I'm not 100% convinced, very difficult to tell, but the more I see it the more I think he controlled it with his right arm. Still what goes around comes around, Fonte's handball was nailed on, and he would have been red carded. Yoshi's was so straight forward, not deliberate imo. Davis is awful, flapping again, lets hope his little injury is not too insignificant and NA has to choose Artur.

What an advert for premier league football! Great game. Saints took it to them and whilst 3-1 was a bit flattering at half time they were well worth the draw. Normally I would be ****ed off with a late equaliser but given the quality of the strike, I am not. Good points from today? The performances of j rod and Guly were much better than I expected. Nice cameos from fox and Richardson too. Puncheon is starting to be our most consistent high performer. Another MOTM performance from him. Happy with a point. Looking forward to the arsenal now.

He's a classless idiot.

Cannot stand a manager who wears a tracksuit for the game (and that cap) then changes into a suit for the interviews. Then gives a stupid interview all about how the ref should have given them more...

Sums up the City of Stoke, in a way...

(no offence VFTT, though I know you don't live there anyway!)

I was a keeper as well. He was too slow getting down. Good save at the end? My nan would have stopped it, and she wouldn't have parried it back into the danger area.

Well interestingly I had the distinct impression that Crouch's lay off back to Jerome had more than a suspicion of hand ball about it (as in upper arm). I would like to see that again in slow mo. We didn't get it - they didn't get theirs - that's life.

It's all physiological. Adkins wears a track suit during the week and a suit during the game so that the players have a 'big occasion' mentality on a match day and see him as the man who's in charge. Pulis wears a track suit on a match day to remind his players that he expects them to play as if they're in a mass brawl in Iceland car park on dole day.

Nicest people in Stoke, the woman who worked in McDonnalds (she was over 18, I hope/pray) and the bouncers out side of a pub who got us to a quiet one that didn't care about away fans (and had a nice bouncer in there who was polite and friendly)

Crouch hand ball in laying it off for their stunning leveller not mentioned.

I too was wondering how Crouchie laid the ball down. Briefly saw it on MOTD and it looked liked he controlled it with both arms. Could be completely wrong after all the beers I had.

Worried about Adkins saying it was a "fantastic point" at Stoke. Several on here have said that to be 3-1 up against 10 men should have meant a certain 3 points. If Adkins doesn't think so, he must be in a very small minority. Is he saying that just to bolster his own position, which just makes you wonder if he feels insecure.
