Dig Dig Posted 29 December, 2012 Share Posted 29 December, 2012 I thought the subs were the right ones. If we'd brought attackers on instead if extra defenders I can't see how the pattern of the game would have changed, they would probably have scored still and Adkins would have been slated for not bringing on defenders People saying we should have brought pace on instead don't seem to understand that pace is useless when you don't have the ball. niceandfriendly Posted 29 December, 2012 Share Posted 29 December, 2012 before the game a point would have been a good result, but considering the circumstances it's a horrible result. first half we were fantastic, second half we sit back, invite the pressure and inevitably we concede two goals and could have been more. can't understand those tactics. love adkins but second half tactics cost us. players who stood out in my opinion were morgan, rodriguez, guly and puncheon - but only in the first half. feels like a defeat, no doubt. Cabrone Posted 29 December, 2012 Share Posted 29 December, 2012 Gutted not to have gotten the 3 points but can't complain really, we managed to get a point scoring one less than the combined tally of last 9 teams that have visited the Britannia. Performances like this are exactly what we need if we are to survive. All in all it was a good day at the office.

lambertsrightleg Posted 29 December, 2012 Share Posted 29 December, 2012 Wow. Streamed the game and was a quivering wreck for the best part of two hours. Absolutely great for 60 minutes and very good for the final 30. I'd love to know how many balls got smashed into our box today, for the defence to stand up to that is a real testament to how far we've come because we would have crumbled early on in the season. Despite what people say I thought the substitutions were spot on, Maya needed help as Stoke kept angling balls towards Crouchie and Jerome who were doubled up on him. Stoke going down to ten men didn't effect them becuase they were only really using defenders and strikers, N'zonzi and Whitehead were just making up the numbers. Maybe it was the save at the end but I'm pretty happy with that point.

IOWSaintDaz Posted 29 December, 2012 Share Posted 29 December, 2012 Sooner we get relegated the better, We went up too soon in my opinion and are ill prepared for the Premier League. we are a laughing stock in this league FACT. Our new signings are completely out of there depth, with that Jap Yoshida probably the worst defender i've seen in a Saints shirt (yes even worse than Jermaine Wright). Can anyone think of a decent Jap player ever?????? We should of won this game when 3-1 up and a clear opening to make it 4-1 was wasted by our comedy Brazilian. Lets not kid ourselves apart from the first goal from Rickie the other 2 goals were very lucky for us, but the combination of comedy defending for their 1st and 2nd goals the open goal miss and a wonder strike for their 3rd cost us the points today. I thinks Arsenal will wipe the floor with us on new years day too It doesn't matter if we buy anyone in the transfer window because the damage is already done. I am of the opinion that the club were so shocked to get promoted last season that we did not have the tactical nous or budget to support the amount of players required in the right areas to strengthen the squad enough to cope with the rigors of the premier league much the same as Reading are seeing and it has cost us dearly. Roll on next season in the Championship when we can build the squad properly as it should be done or if by some quirk of fate we do stay up get rid of the players who we know cannot cut it sooner rather than later. OldNick Posted 29 December, 2012 Share Posted 29 December, 2012 It is disappointing to drop points from a winning position, but I doubt many of us realistically thought we,d get anything from today's game. He flapped at a few, but equally came and got others. The tactics - 4-4-2, centre back at right back, Guly instead of Ramirez, Rodriguez instead of Ramirez, playing it long and down the channels were the reasons we were 3-1 up in the first place. Adkins tactics worked pretty well.

mitch01 Posted 29 December, 2012 Share Posted 29 December, 2012 No Pompey fans on here mate. Just realist, well some of us. If you truly and honestly think you are a realist then you have a very warped view of the world indeed. After a couple of hours of reflection and cooling off, I feel I am ready to comment. Great to get a point from Stoke. Excellent tactics from Nigel and very well carried out by the players. Stoke were always going to come at us at some point, and I felt we resisted very well apart from Kelvin who really struggled to deal with Jones' threat and that affected the rest of his game I think. Defence were all excellent, although Fonte was lucky to get away with a blatant handball. Guly was good at left midfield, but made two crucial errors at crucial times when he failed to help out Shaw for the first goal and then missed a great chance in the second. Harsh to criticise him too much, he put in a very good shift. Lambert's use of the ball in the first half was very clever, but I thought he gave it up too easily once or twice in the second. Still, his goal and assists demonstrate his continuing value to us. Rodriguez did well but should have done better when crossing to Lambert in the second half, his miss was as much down to good goalkeeping as anything. Nigel's subs were spot on I thought. Richardson is a great option to have as he is defensive-minded but still got up and down the wing and sent in one particularly good cross. A late goal is very tough to take, but it was an incredible strike. My worry is for how the players will react to the blow, as they were so close to a huge result, but if anyone can keep them buoyant its Nigel. Jonnyboy Posted 29 December, 2012 Share Posted 29 December, 2012 What a sensational game, that is what the Premier League is all about. Stoke were absolutely sensational in that 2nd half, the sheer drive and determination that they feed off Pulis and their fans is absolutely awe inspiring. Any team would have found holding on to a two goal lead tough today. It hurts though, Guly had a strong game but that miss was horrible. J-Rod should have tucked away his effort just before, so he isn't solely to blame. If it was 4-1, I think the fight would have evaporated from Stoke's game and we would have won comfortably. The effort on display from most of the lads today was fantastic and that sort of spirit will have to continue if we are to stay up. It's going to be damn difficult. While we all feel a little deflated at the point, it is more than we expected to get AND we have to remember that we rode our luck. Stoke won't defend as bad as they did in that first half again for a while, plus Clattenburg missed a blatant penalty when Fonte handled the ball. Fonte would have also received a 2nd yellow and we'd have been looking at a defeat. Davis - 5 - Poor today, never dealt with the threat of the long throw effectively and could have saved the 2nd. Distribution was average. Yoshida - 8 - Absolutely fantastic performance, gutsy, great tackling, real stand out for me Fonte - 7 - Solid, blocked several shots/headers Hooiveld - 6 - Never looked as assured with the ball at his feet but he never f**ked up! Yay! Shaw - 6 - Struggled today but his pace and his effort made up for it often Schneiderlin - 7 - Solid, played his part Cork - 8 - Seemed to be everywhere in the middle of the park Puncheon - 7 - Sometimes he's magical, sometimes he keeps the ball a bit too long. Seemed to overhit a lot. Good effort though. Guly - 7 - Great assist for the first, worked really hard. Shame about that miss, it was awful! Rodriguez - 7 - Impressive, could have made it 4-1. Worked hard. Lambert - 8 - MOTM - Superb when he got the opportunity. 1 goal, 2 assists. Top class. Won't grade the subs, they came on too late! Great summary. pingwing Posted 29 December, 2012 Share Posted 29 December, 2012 Right train back from stoke now and some time to take it in. On the one hand 2 points dropped in the short term, long term one point wouldn't have other wise seen us get. Guly, other than the defensive laps for their first, man of the match! The had no answer and drugged with him out wide. We were excellent first half, doing what we do as ell as any team in the league, pressing them in their half. After their 2nd we stopped and tried to hold out for 3-2, which has and never will work. Shame but Adkins has to learn from that now! They were a lot better after the sending off and playing 5-0-4, mostly because we let them and assumed the still didn know about punch. Adkins should have known to keep the ball from them an pressure for a 4th. Still a point is a point. Again stars of today, Guly, cork, morg, fonte and yoshida. All really good hard fought games. Stand out problem kelvin! No command of the area came for everything regardless Of how stupid it was and generally showed why we needed a prem keeper today badly. Colinjb Posted 29 December, 2012 Share Posted 29 December, 2012 After that first half, i'm not surprised that we were hanging on at the end. We out-fought, outgunned and utterly outdid one of the most physical sides in the league. We were knackered, holding on... and got the point we deserved. That was a truly stunning game of football.
