New years honours

After they made made Kelly Holmes a Dame, the honours board have certainly made a rod for their own back!

Both Wiggo and Sarah Storey already had CBE's so the only remaining options were not to give them awards or make them Sir/Dame. I think its good that every gold medal winner got an award, especially as it covered the paralympics as well.

Why ? They were doing their ( generally publicly funded ) 'jobs' and got their reward with the gold medals and publicity. Why not reward the silver medal winners, they are still the 2nd best in the World, and may have missed out by a fraction to a phenominally talented opponent, or is 2nd a failure ?

It's good because its clear why some people got awards and others did not, far better than some gold medal winners getting awards and some not. They had to greatly extend the number they usually give to sports people to cover the gold medal winners so its unlikely they would have been able to extend it to those who got silver.

yes...when 1st is the winner, 2nd is a failure..and most serious sports people see that..

Giving an award to Tracey Emin is the biggest joke ever. This is the so called "Artist" who put an unmade bed in an exhibition and called it art.If that all its takes,my kids should be worth millions.

but the intelligensia think she is great. I viewed a Christies modern art auction and could not believe the utter trash that comes under the 'modern art' banner. it is an old cliche but you would not be surprised of a lot were from kindergarden or junior school artrooms. The majority of modern art is a case of the emperors new clothes.

But we are not giving the awards for being 'serious sports people', we are giving them, I assume, for being inspirational and setting an example of how dedication and commitment generate their own rewards. For some of the paralympians, simply competing is in itself a triumph over adversity, any medal is simply a bonus.

It seems Kelly got her damehood BEFORE her retirement, Jamie! According to Wiki, she got her DBE in March 2005 but her final race before retirement was in August 2005.

i bet it was known she was retiring...ffs, it was a matter of months..Mo has years to go yet...and definitely another olympics

stop trying to make out it is something it is not...

i bet you keep checking the guardian to see what they have to say about it (if anything)

She's Professor of Drawing at the RA.....I never got conceptual art either to be honest. Her drawings are excellent and havibg seen a program on her I look on her with some respect now. Some students trashed her "bed" and she has declined an offer of a million quid to remake it.

Oh dear, you do get very defensive don't you? You said she'd retired when she got her DBE - she hadn't. I'm not trying to make out anything, just querying why Mo Farah didn't get a KBE for a similar performance. The only reference I've read in the Guardian to the whole honours thing is their questioning of the disparate number of gongs awarded to olympic athletes compared to paralympic athletes.

OK?

I don't care, actually. I think it's a load of old ******** and I speak as one whose ex-husband got an MBE. I was simply raising an eyebrow or two at apparent inequality.
