Uh-oh...

@tancredipalmeri: Re Southampton-Astori: the player has reached an agreement with the club, that now is working to pay less than the 10m € asked by Cagliari

It's just a part of the game playing. I dare say it happens all the time - talk a figure to get a club interested enough to allow you to discuss terms, then agree terms, then try to negotiate the fee with the advantage that the player wants to come so it puts the buying club in a slightly stronger position. At the end of the day Cagliari only appear to be selling due to their financial problems (same reason we got Ramirez) so it makes sense for his to try and nip and get him but still some room for gamesmanship at the end. Less than 6 months ago Caglari accepted a 15m Euro offer from Spartak Moscow for him so if they now will take 10m Euro and maybe even less it appears we're potentially getting a player for a good price on the face of it.

Never seen him play and no idea how good he is but does appear to be the right sort of signing for us - perhaps our Premier League pound goes further abroad and whilst there is the added risk of no Premier League experience the club clearly trusts its scouting network. At that price though there will be pressure for him to perform straight away though.

You need 3 decent centre halves anyway. THey will all play their part even if the Itie does join.

Agreed. We'd look pretty good in CB if this guy comes.

2 Internationals in Astori and Yoshida, and 2 solid pro's in Fonte and Jos. Not really going to get a better 4 CB's for a club in our position.

How about the option of playing 3 centre backs + two wing backs?

Why when the current system is working well? In any case that would then just mean a midfielder/attacker being dropped instead.

Astori will come into the team with us playing the same system, in place of Fonte or Yoshida.

Another bit from Tancredi Palmeri's twitter;

@SaintsRumours@tancredipalmeri how close do you reckon the deal is?

To be honest, this is following exactly the same lines as the Ramirez deal. There's only 1 winner here, and it's us. They need the money, we're the only club offering the money, and the players wants to join.

They can try and haggle but at the end of the day, they'll accept what we offer at the end of the day. It's all playing the game as well, happens all over the world during every transfer window. Quite fun really.

Wonder if we've given them a deadline?

It's funny hearing/reading WH fans convince themselves that Cole on 40k a week and Chamakh are good signings.

Cole probably won't be too bad if he gets some games under his belt, one of Englands better players when he was fit and confident.

But Chamakh, I agree. What does he do? Awful player in my eyes. Not sure if he's a loan signing or not for them.

Does anyone know if Adkins has even heard of this bloke?

Probably. I'd heard of him before we were linked.

But in this day and age, managers don't know every single target. The scouts are paid to do that work, they bring back the reports and videos and then the management decide if it's a good option. It's not something done on a snap judgement either, I'd imagine this has been a good years worth of scouting.

Why?

Well the need for a loan from the BVI (which I suspect was due to the need to pay ramierez up front) suggest swe aint cash rich. Fag packet maths, suggests turnover this year will approach 60mil - of which 30 ish or more will be wages (30 x 20k per week is approx 30 mil). operating costs/cost of sales willl swallow another 15 -20 mil or so, does not leave 38 mil - so this is usually split over the term of the contracts so with asset depreciation following on the books, but even so, its a lot for a club to comit to in its first season back up...
