Davide Astori Southampton target?

From the Italian quote it says that the main interest in Italy is from Napoli, but that the counteroffer from Saints is to have the player in January. I suspect the generosity of our offer is conditional on that happening.

so Napoli want to sign him in the summer but we want him now..?

I can see this rumbling on till the end of the window.

I hope not, there is no thrid party involved and I think if we have made a bid it's up to the other clubs to match it, of the ones mentioned Everton have no money, Juventus would only sign him as back up and don't seem that interested, so it looks like it's between us and Napoli. If Napoli bow out cos they can't afford then it's up to the player but I would presume we would have alsready sounded out some interest with him before the bid.

Suppose it depends how long Napoli hold out for.

Possible. But I do get the feeling we now know exactly what/who we want, and will make early generous. 'Its £xxx with a decision in 3 days,or poke it'.

We went early with a generous offer in the summer for j-Rod.

Suppose it depends on Cagliari, if you go the rumours of us offering 10.5 million euros and Napoli offering 7.5 million, they would say stump up the extra 3 mil or get lost. Napoli basically deceide if they want to pay that much (or if they can) and will probably make a bid for the Juve player who might be cheaper.

Cagliari need the cash asap, they won't want to hold out another 3 - 4 weeks paying his wages etc. If Napoli won't match our bid early I can see it getting done quickly. Once again, Astori is a seriously good centre half and completing this signing would be a proper statement of intent from the club.

Will be down to the players probably.

it wont hardly get a mention though....

even now, just popped talksport on in the kitchen whilst tidying up...all they were going on about was the clubs in liverpool, manchester, london

and newcastle regarding transfer window activity...

loads of talk about harry will bring in star players and not even a mention about us or reading etc..

Logically the player will choose Napoli if he can, gets to stay in Italy, playing for a bigger club than us, who finished 5th last year and third before that, he will walk into the team because they have lost two defenders to long term bans and he'll get more money.

However if they aren't an option I reckon he will move to us because we'll pay him more than Cagliari and with their financial troubles they will sell all their best players so will get worse (currently 4th from bottom).

Very true, even when we signed Gaston is was somewhat overlooked. Maybe Nige needs to hang out the window of a Range Rover on the way on or out of Staplewood and tell some journos he's a "triffic, top, top player"

Transfer deadline days we never see a SSN reporter outside SMS or Staplewood.

4th from bottom? At least he'll fit in here.

Very, very true. I hate this obsession of the media to navel gaze at the same handful of clubs. It is one of the reasons why I try to keep clear from Sky and Talksport;

When we bought Gaston, I was in the car and the only comment from the radio station I was listening to (5 Live I think) was to take the p i s s because he was born in Fray Bentos.

We need another Keeganesque signing to make an impression. Walcott would be the sort of name that we would need to attract.

Agreed, we need to round up the hood rats from Council Estates across Southampton and get them to congregate outside the entrance to St Mary's drinking cans of lager and/ or fake red bull energy drinks in 1 ltr plastic bottles and swearing now and again for no reason ala Stoke and Everton.

SSN are only interested in the transfers that happen between two huge prem clubs like Stoke and Liverpool for the transfer of world class players like Charlie Adam, who fans could not believe in their wildest dreams they would ever get to see play for their club.

The summer window deadline day was Charlie Adam day.

Very true, thats why I stay away from TalkSport unless they are actually talking about Football matches. It's always related to Arsenal/Liverpool/Manchester clubs or Chelsea. Boring.

Who would you suggest we buy for that kind of money to improve the first team? Or are you suggesting we need better bench-warmers?

Paul Robinson from Millwall, Dean Leacock from Derby, Zakauini from Peterborough...

Would all be available for not much money and would walk into our team whilst being ready to sign at 00:00 1st Jan.

Very true, they are also two points clear I think unlike us, but maybe the lure of playing in front of 30k instead of 8k might work.

lol, there are plenty about and I'm sure there are plenty near SMS. Failling that we could just get the youth teams out there in disguise.

I don't think anyone at SSN has ever anticipated that mighty Transfer Deadline Day might not be that interesting if no one is buying or selling anyone that good.

Maybe we did but couldn't sign them for a hundred different reasons? It's not as easy as some people seem to think. There is more to offering money...

Other clubs managed to strengthen the areas that desperately needed strengthening OK. We spent a hell of a lot on two or three players (two of which aren't starters) yet failed to further strengthen where we needed to. I mean how vital was Rodriguez when we had the likes of the LM position and CB under strength (thank goodness we haven't had any real injuries to fonte and Yoshida.)

If we had signed a back up left midfielder instead of Jay Rod you would have been the first moaning about our lack of depth up front and the fact we spuked millions on a back up to Lallana who is always a sub.

Fact is - all teams try to strengthen and some do better than others. A lot of teams fared worse than us in the transfer market this summer! QPR, Reading, Villa, Liverpool, Newcastle, Fulham to name a few.

Rodriguez is an important player for us, take him out of the equation and our striker options are not that great.

I still don't get why people assume signing X means we didn't prioritise other positions. As with everyone else, we are successful with some targets, unsuccessful with others but it doesn't mean that we sign players at the expense of other positions. We obviously have a very particular transfer policy and won't sign players unless they are thr right type, age, mentality and improve what we have.

I asked some Danish Serie A fans about Astori - here are a few quickly translated comments:

"Saints are but one of many suitors. Cagliari doesn't want to sell but their economical situation may well change their mind."

"He's too good for the Saints. He really is a class player. Only reason for Cagliari to sell is their economical problems."

"I do think he'll choose an Italian club. Napoli and Milan are presumably on the lookout for a defender.

However, Saints did manage to get Ramirez"

"It's a question of price, wages, place of living, and ambitions towards the national team. The first two parameters could easily bring Saints in pole position whereas the last two (and especially the final) could point towards an Italian club.

With regards to his qualities he is quite a complete player. Good in the air, reasonable with his feet, good positioning and okay in infights. There is still room for improvement but I do not understand why Milan let him go se easily.

I wouldn't mind seeing him at Juventus even though he has had a less than good (read: quite bad) season this year.

A change of scenery would probably do him good."

"IMO Astori is quite good but he has been a victim of national hype after a few lean years for Italy. Like Ogbonna for example. Good defenders but not international top class.

The prices mentioned are €12-15m which is quite close to double of the market price."
