I think it means that Napoli have made a €7.5m bid but that we've bid 10..? not sure though

why...just a throw away comment..a very real possibility and has no bearing on it actually happening

I've seen you post the same thing constantly - 'we're spending QPR money' etc.

Have you thought about the fact that 1) we can afford to spend this money 2) we have what is effectively a league 1 side 3) it's not easy to make the step up from the championship and to be competitive we need to spend money.. everyone knows that our summer transfer window wasn't brilliant, therefore we do need to spend money this month to make up for it.

i know..just pointing out that the money we have spent and looks like adding to is monumental for a newly promoted team...going down with that money spent would be a disaster...it really would

adds to the melting pot and intensity to the end of the season...should be fun

Spock on.

Plus we can easily raise lots by selling players if we did end up going down. We could raise 30m very quickly - no dispuking that.

i don't disagree, just gets a bit repetitive when your constantly pointing this out. with a couple of well thought out signings (i.e. not rushed/panic buys) we should be good enough to finish mid-table.

Entirely depends if we can afford it or not will determine it it's a gamble.

No way of knowing that now so might as well enjoy the ride.

Other clubs fans will damn us either way, spend too much and were doing a 'QPR' or 'Leeds', not spend much and we 'have no money' 'no rich owners' etc.

I reckon we are more or less there already TBH a keeper we definately need and another wide man, CB deffo too but this could always be cover as Fonte and Yoshi are starting to look good.

I have more concerns that we dont ever seem to carve out many chances.

Agree - Keeper, wide man and CB of decent quality would be a good window.

Despite the fact we carved out shedloads against the team with the best away defensive record in the Premier League... FFS.

Completely depends on resale values. Burley spent a lot for the championship, spunked it all on players whose values weren't going to go up, utter disaster. Likewise QPR, huge wages, reasonable amount on fees and mostly players who won't be going up in value, more likely down.

Saints have been sensible. Ramirez is a good player, a costly one but he's young and that value can easily go up but isn't likely to go down much. Even a poor season and relegation and he'd fetch 10m you'd imagine. Jrod, a few premier league goals and values get silly for young english players. Yoshida is probably worth more already, as clearly is Clyne. Puncheon, Lallana, Morgan, Cork and Shaw are worth more than ever before as well.

So yes, spending a lot, but not in a daft way. Relegation would just mean a depressing sale of talent that no doubt goes on to excel elsewhere and rise further in value.

True, and sums up the difference between our policy and that of QPR who would struggle to shift average, past it players on huge wages. (Puncheon would be able to leave for free though).

If we went down we could sell Ramirez, Lallana, Schneiderlin, Cork, Shaw, Clyne etc the day after.

But we won't go down - especially not if we add 3 more players, CB, GK and wide man.

We would be good enough to stay up.. whether we will is a different question.. we need to cut out these individual errors, we should have won yesterday and against stoke.

for the record I think we will stay up but we should be a lot more comfortable than we are right now

5 chances, mainly from range if I remember rightly, we played very well against the Arse but in general I think we play around with it too much, Stoke was better as we got it into the box more

I do actually share your opinion slightly. We keep the ball well, move it around well, but at times struggle with that final third push to create enough meaningful openings. I think we've got the strikers to put it away, but just a little bit more quality in the final third (i.e wide area's) then we'd be laughing. I know that sounds a bit silly given that the attack has been our best performing area' this year, and we always look like scoring goals, but I think we need to have a little more variation up there. (i.e an explosive burst of pace)

it does seem that we've created less chances since AL's injury, haven't seen any stats or anything so have no way of backing this up but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the case

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, he's a massive part of our attack. We don't really have a replacement for him.....

The fact that SDR is getting game time says it all for me.

agreed, he's a huge player for us and we've missed him badly

I think SDR playing may be a case of putting him in the shop window in the hope that a championship club comes along this month

It also strikes me that many of our players have a reluctance to shoot from distance; even from nearly the edge of the box we prefer to play our way through. This was expecially noticable against Fulham, when it was p*ssing down and a really slippy surface, we just didn't ever want to try our luck with a shot that bounced in front of the keeper. Given we see so few shots I'm inclined to believe its being coached into the players.

In the lower leagues Lambert and others were more than willing to chance their arm from distance. I don't think they're anywhere near as keen in the PL.

Basically this really, Lambert has been playing deep too, you can see how effective he is when you get the ball to him in the box by looking at last year and against Stoke, we seem to try so hard in the build up though, giving the oppo time to regroup but also sometimes I just think get it in there !!

When J Rod came on he certainly gave us more movement up front, and Im not saying Lambert cant find those positions, he just doesnt seem to be this year.

From what I can gather about the situation is that in the next 2/3 days, we will be going in with an offer of €10m which will be too much for Napoli to bid against.

Be interesting to see how this one develops. Seems a bit pricey for my liking if I'm honest with you but if it gets us £90m+ next season of PL TV money then go for it.

Why up the bid from €7.5m to €10m ? Sounds strange......

So that we can get the player. By blowing other deals out the water the player effective has no choice of where to move to.

Wrong. If the player refuses to accept our terms - as he wants to go elsewhere - then our bid is irrelevant, and his current club have to consider the bid from Napoli or whoever. They could of course tell him its Southampton at 10m or you're staying here, but given what we're reading about the financial situation at his current club that seems unlikely.

Didn't we experience this a couple of windows ago with someone else ?

Inclined to agree, but with the £90m at stake ?
