Crab Lungs Posted 31 December, 2012 Share Posted 31 December, 2012 I'd recommend, if you get the chance, to have a look at Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik. If he was on our radar, he's the type of domineering centre-half that we might need. That said, Astori is quality too, different type of CB though. Saint Charlie Posted 2 January, 2013 Share Posted 2 January, 2013 Completely depends on resale values. Burley spent a lot for the championship, spunked it all on players whose values weren't going to go up, utter disaster. Likewise QPR, huge wages, reasonable amount on fees and mostly players who won't be going up in value, more likely down. Saints have been sensible. Ramirez is a good player, a costly one but he's young and that value can easily go up but isn't likely to go down much. Even a poor season and relegation and he'd fetch 10m you'd imagine. Jrod, a few premier league goals and values get silly for young english players. Yoshida is probably worth more already, as clearly is Clyne. Puncheon, Lallana, Morgan, Cork and Shaw are worth more than ever before as well. So yes, spending a lot, but not in a daft way. Relegation would just mean a depressing sale of talent that no doubt goes on to excel elsewhere and rise further in value. True, and sums up the difference between our policy and that of QPR who would struggle to shift average, past it players on huge wages. (Puncheon would be able to leave for free though). If we went down we could sell Ramirez, Lallana, Schneiderlin, Cork, Shaw, Clyne etc the day after. But we won't go down - especially not if we add 3 more players, CB, GK and wide man. We keep the ball well, move it around well, but at times struggle with that final third push to create enough meaningful openings. I think we've got the strikers to put it away, but just a little bit more quality in the final third (i.e wide area's) then we'd be laughing. I know that sounds a bit silly given that the attack has been our best performing area' this year, and we always look like scoring goals, but I think we need to have a little more variation up there. (i.e an explosive burst of pace) It also strikes me that many of our players have a reluctance to shoot from distance; even from nearly the edge of the box we prefer to play our way through. This was expecially noticable against Fulham, when it was p*ssing down and a really slippy surface, we just didn't ever want to try our luck with a shot that bounced in front of the keeper. Given we see so few shots I'm inclined to believe its being coached into the players. In the lower leagues Lambert and others were more than willing to chance their arm from distance. I don't think they're anywhere near as keen in the PL.

When J Rod came on he certainly gave us more movement up front, and Im not saying Lambert cant find those positions, he just doesnt seem to be this year. itchen_dan Posted 2 January, 2013 Share Posted 2 January, 2013 From what I can gather about the situation is that in the next 2/3 days, we will be going in with an offer of €10m which will be too much for Napoli to bid against. Be interesting to see how this one develops. Seems a bit pricey for my liking if I'm honest with you but if it gets us £90m+ next season of PL TV money then go for it. Badger Posted 2 January, 2013 Share Posted 2 January, 2013 Why up the bid from €7.5m to €10m ? Sounds strange...... So that we can get the player. By blowing other deals out the water the player effective has no choice of where to move to. Wrong. If the player refuses to accept our terms - as he wants to go elsewhere - then our bid is irrelevant, and his current club have to consider the bid from Napoli or whoever. They could of course tell him its Southampton at 10m or you're staying here, but given what we're reading about the financial situation at his current club that seems unlikely. Didn't we experience this a couple of windows ago with someone else ? suewhistle Posted 2 January, 2013 Share Posted 2 January, 2013 From the Italian quote it says that the main interest in Italy is from Napoli, but that the counteroffer from Saints is to have the player in January. I suspect the generosity of our offer is conditional on that happening.
