Davide Astori Southampton target?

Didn´t Bolognas chairman say last year that he wouldn´t sell Ramirez....

don't think so

Closest he came was this when we couldn't agree a payment plan (which is also presumably responsible for that loan we had) :

"’Bologna have reacted angrily to the player and agent’s outspoken comments, with chairman Albano Guaraldi saying: ‘Ramirez is contracted to Bologna – and the club will decide upon his future, not the player himself.’Ramirez’s behaviour is totally unacceptable, giving open interviews like that without consulting us. Gaston cannot force my hand with two interviews. I am a serious person and I’ve already said it will take €20m to sell him. And I also told his agent.’"

Already posted in the HCDAJFU? thread.... but just for the record as far as this thread is concerned...

Money talks, and Cagliari have none. If we don't sign him, it won't be because they've decided they aren't selling him. All that chat is for the same two reasons as always; to bump the asking price up, and to appease the fans.

Or because he doesnt want to leave.

Thought I might dredge this old thread up again.

Looks like someone in the Italian press thinks Astori won't be in the Cagliari first 11 this season:

Is he off somewhere? Would love to see an Astori - Lovren partnership with Yoshida as back-up.

(As an aside, they have Osvaldo listed in the expected Roma first 11)

You have to love how Citeh may or may not have an injury to one of their 4 international CBs so will now go and spend 15m on another one just in case

Plus I think they really don't rate Lescott.

Was either him of Lovren, get the feeling that Lovren's availability came out of no where and quickly become our first choice.

Aye. I fear so. If we did have another £10m to spend though, Astori would be amazing.

Think he is also very competent at left back? So any fears about cover for that position might be assuaged too.

Nothing to fear! I think we've got the better CB in the end.

A 2nd top class CB will probably come next year, we're steadily building something.

I reckon next years transfer targets will revolve around upgrading the GK (can see a big bid for a GK on the horizon), a top class 2nd CB and a top class attacking winger.

After that, I don't think we'll spend a great deal over the following years, as that squad should see us through a fair few seasons.

Our biggest issue might be about keeping players as opposed to buying them. Shaw, Wanyama, Morgan, JRod, Clyne - all could wanted by bigger clubs in the next 12-18 months

But we wouldn't need to sell them, and we've been quite clever in tying them all down to very long-term deals.

So if someone did want them, they'd have to break the bank. We're in a strong position either way. Great squad management.

I do hope not. Vastly overrated and overpriced. He really isn't worth all the hype. Anybody who has watched him regularly over the past 2 seasons will tell you that.

Yeah but people said Fonte was sh:t last season. We have the bestest coaches in the Premier League remember? They'll make him look like Franco Baresi.

Don't we already have the best centre back pairing in the prem?

We have but they've started getting complacent. I mean, they actually went and let a goal in at OT last weekend. That's 3 already this season! They need some pressure to keep them on their toes. ;)

The Daily Mirror are hell bent on seeing Saints fail. Clearly.

I can't wait to see one of our comedians and their made up conversations between the lazy lying scumbag journo and the lazy lying scumbag editor about how they can destabilise us. We haven't had one of them for a while which is a shame as not only are they side splittingly hilarious they are not doubt 100% accurate too.

If he turns out like Lovren who was claimed by some to be a liability at Lyon then I think I'd take that.

Lyon were playing in the CL/EL when Lovren was there. Cagliari are a mid table Serie A side who's aim is to survive every season. Lovren would be one of the best centre backs in Italy if he were there.

This is a fair piece on Astori, agree with all of it. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1727555-why-manchester-city-transfer-target-davide-astori-is-the-italian-titus-bramble

The boy sure grew up with a lot expectations and potential (as many of the youth products that come out of Milanello do), but for most regular Serie A watchers like me he's failed to live up to that. He's 27 in January, at that age he should be coming into the prime of his career but he's far from that.

Of course if we were to sign him he'd get my full support and I'd hope he could live up to potential he showed when he was younger. But for the money Cagliari want I think we could do a lot better looking elsewhere.

Do we really need to spend 10m on a CB when Fonte has been excellent alongside Lovren so far this season? Obviously there's no room for sentiment etc etc, but why break up a strong pairing like Lovren/Fonte mid-season?

No sentiment in football. If it improves the team and we become even more solid and remember you do need a big squad if you are going to succeed in both the league and europe.

Astori and Benega would be effing fantastic.

Have any of the Serie A watchers got an update on Astoori formbook.

I watch quite a bit of Italian football, have kept an eye out for Astori since our link last year.

He's played in 15 of Cagliari's 17 games so far, no goals and 1 assist. Not been a stand out in any game ive seen so far, id use the word "steady" to describe him.

Surprised he didnt move on in the summer as Cagliari were always going to be a lower/mid table side this season and this may cost him his place with Italy in the WC
