Davide Astori Southampton target?

Poor old Forren has got no chance of playing has he? He should have gone on trial at Liverpool and never believed nasty Nic.

Or as he said in his interview recently he is waiting to get 100% fot over the summer and then push for a place on pre season.

His adjusting period probably has helped him a lot in the long run. Too often we throw people in underprepared and expect them ro be worldbeaters.

Back in the day when Liverpool were successful, their new signings were sent to th Reserves for up to a Season to learn to play "The Liverpool Way". was very rare anyone went "straight" into the team.

Maybe it will work.

That's what I am saying chang, as soon as he gets fully fit a £12m Italian left footed CB is signed and he is back to the bench.

Astori would be a great signing.

I thought Fonte would not make the step up this year but he has proved me wrong and still getting better each game. Yoshida is very solid and can (to varying degrees of success!!) play right acrosss the four defensive positions. Jos is OK - bit unlucky with the og's.

Despite all that, we do not have anyone that makes you go wow! I still hold my breath a bit when the centre backs are exposed (less so recently I admit). Forren still needs time to get up to speed. Probably not see the best of him till next year.

So on that basis I still think this is the area most likely to need strengthening - primarily to take us to that 'next level'.

I hope we sign him for the simple reason that we can sing.....

Needed a little time to sign up, needed a little time to sign up, sign up

What's the story, Davide Astori, weeeeeelllllllllllllllllll

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

All over that!

Although the first line will be forgotten/ hummed/ sped up the rest makes up for it.. "Welllllll" could be our "Milllllll" Fact!

have checked sky italia and cant see that anywhere though?

let's face it if you surf enough you can find a link between most footballers/managers and most clubs.

Saw one yesterday that said Liverpool were going to sack Rogers and appoint Martinez just to p*ss off Everton.

Astori would be good though, number 13 shirt must be vacant as well.

Fox currently has it. :D

Worth pointing out both that as we are changing all kits there's no reason to keep any of the current numbers, and also that I have assumed our anally retentive numbering scheme of previous seasons was an Adkins thing, and I think the numbers generally will be a little less methodical this season.

What does this mean? Our numbers last season seemed perfectly logical to a large degree, with the exceptions of Lallana and Puncheon who chose to keep the numbers they had. The only other slight oddity was giving Yoshi the number 3 but better he had it than Fox.

Our numbers were incredibly logical last year, to MLG levels. I don't think it'll matter as much to Pochettino - the cause of this would also be evident if Reading's numbers show signs of over-indulgent logic this season.

I believe Yoshida signed after the numbers were announced and took whatever was available and vaguely relevant (i.e. a defender's number), and actually for me, Gazzaniga's 12 was the number which really stood out as Butterfield had it the year before, although that's a "normal" number for a keeper in a 23 man tournament squad, the previous season the keepers had 1,21,31 and 41. Mayuka's 24 was a tad off-base too, but mostly the numbers stuck to a formula and you could more or less predict signings (and failed signings like #5 Jemal in 2011) based on the number gaps.

The basic premise of 1s for GKs, 2s and 3s for full backs, 5s and 6s for CBs, 7s and 9s for strikers, and the rest midfielders makes sense and actually I like it. Whether it's really necessary is another matter.

Lots of competition to fend off if you believe this or just normal Italian club/agent talking up the price!

This is the big problem, any half decent player linked with a move is going to be on the radar of much bigger clubs than ours or those mid tier prem clubs willing to pay silly wages (Sunderland etc)

I like the numbers like that in the more 'traditional' way. 7 isn't a strikers number though, usually the right winger. The role Lambert plays he should have number 10.

Yes but 7 has become a bit of a 'legends' number at Southampton. Paine, Keegan, Le Tiss, Lambert... ( ....Skacel???)

I know, lol @ skacel BTW.

The format also really only fits these days with a standard 4-4-2 which we and many clubs don't play.

Don't forget Andrei Kanchelskis who sadly was the first player deemed 'worthy' of the coveted 7 after MLT.

I've had a brief look at the Italian sites and now it would appear Rubin Kazan are also interested in Astori, but the mention of Saint's interest has at least been consistent for some time.

Who knows, it'll all come out in the wash, and it's not worth fretting about it too much. I see we've been linked with Hooper again. Think I'll come back in a month and see what's happened..

Not at Saints it isn't.

On the subject of Centre Backs - Yoshida played very well for Japan v Australia in a World Cup qualifier overnight. He was quick, tackled and blocked well and was calm and composed all night. Whether Astori or someone else arrives in the summer, I think M. Yoshida has a big part to play for Saints.

Even I think I would look good against that Aussie team. Saying that Yoshida has had his 'year' bedding so I think we have more to come from him next season.

Probably right Skint - Japan did play Aust. off the park to be blunt; just the same, he did very well. Wouldn't the midfielder Honda look good in Saints colours? On his way to AC Milan apparently.

Wonder if some of the numbers will get moved around again next season. Yoshi or Astori as number 16 maybe. Shaw #3 would seem obvious.

Too obvious, he might like being Michael Jordan (he's too young) / David Beckham for LA.

Yeah looked good and seen his name mentioned a few times as a 'good' player...would do a great job for us I would imagine.

*waits for the obvious - has a good engine on him - joke*

Do you think this deal is no more after signing Lovren?

5centre backs so guessing we will be looking to move one on now..

Would love to see him sign as well. Would make our back line fecking awesome.

Personally I would not be surprised to see both Fonte and Jos leave. Astori, lovren, Forren and Yoshida as the defence and back up is bloody good.

I would be surprised if we sign Astori as well if in fact the claims of Forren's agent that he was signed for next season are true, although if he was that good surely he would have had some game time at the end of last season. With Fonte & Jos as well as Yoshida I think we'd have to sell one if not both Fonte & Jos to allow space for Astori.

I would be delighted if we went into next season with choices at CB being Lovren, Astori, Yoshida & Forren a vast improvement on the start of last season

Think we'll let the Astori thing go now, unless we have plans to play Lovren elsewhere than at CB. We probably just pumped that up a bit this week (or last) to get Aulas to agree to our 8+2 offer and not pay 10 outright.

Cagliari will not be selling centre-back Davide Astori this summer according to club director Francesco Marroccu.

Astori, who has four caps for Italy, had previously been linked with Southampton, Tottenham and Rubin Kazan.

But, according to reports from Italy over the weekend, the player's former club, AC Milan, were set to make a move.

Speaking to L'Unione Sarda, Marroccu was adamant though that the player would not be leaving.

Marroccu said: "Davide Astori is a point of reference for the future. He is a player that we would not consider selling. Cagliari will start again from him. He represents us on the world stage and he is a certainty for us.

"And we have not forgotten when he rejected a move to Spartak Moscow last year in order to remain here. That gesture made us proud."

Astori made over 30 appearances for Cagliari last season and is currently with the Italian national side in Brazil taking part in the Confederations Cup.

Such a shame IMO. World class defender and a cut above anything we've currently got. To think we could of got him for an extra £2m to that Lovren bloke. :(

Looked odds on we would sign him just a few weeks ago. Also was really looking forward to singing this at SMS next season: (starting from 3:01)
