Davide Astori Southampton target?

Just left a meeting in Milan according to Twitter

A little vague. Who was it? Twitter can be a valuable source for information, but only if it is someone that might actually know, rather than a random.

In any case, as Saint Garrett says above, looks like we've moved onto Forren for the left sided centre back.

@iFootballPlanet: The agent representing Davide Santon, Mattia Destro and Davide Astori has just left a meeting with Milan.

To be fair he has been there at least 3 times since we were linked with Astori. he also represents a couple of Milan players.

Seems that Forren is instead of him though.

A twitter called @iFootballPlanet reported it.

The exact tweet said that his Agent has met with Milan though it should be noted that this agent also represents Davide Santon who has also been strongly linked with a move to Milan

Yesterday the same page also stated that..

Milan have intimated an interest in Ricardo Centurion, while they have dismissed links with Cagliari’s Davide Astori. -SW

The deal is probably dead with Forren coming in I would imagine unless Adkins wants to go with an entirely different CB pairing for the rest of the season.

Who knows how reliable this is' date=' but if we get Astori and Coutinho out squad should be good enough to stay up regardless of manager.[/quote']

The Mirror broke the story about Adkins last night, so it seems they know their stuff.

@alex_crook: Looms like Astori is a red herring for #saintsfc only being mentioned to spark bidding war between Italian clubs

Yet equally, John Cross who has got it right with us all along, says he will sign as expected.

"Cagliari’s Italy international defender Davide Astori, 26, has been their main target , the deal is still on and is likely to go through before the winter window closes."

not sure why we are so obsessed with this left/right footed thing...Utd for example have Smalling, Evans, Vidic, Ferdinand all right footers...I'm sure a few teams in the league are the same....Chelsea as well.

Exactly; so why should we not play with two left footers in the centre of the defence?

@tancredipalmeri

Southampton's target Astori to Rai: "I would like to play a foreign league. My situation is in the hands of president and sports director"

@tancredipalmeri @SouthCoastClub he wants to move, but president not keen cause involved in relegation battle

Was expecting this to be dead but.....

Oh Charlie, dont get our hopes up ;)

Well that would be a dream player for me to get in. First choice CB for 3-4 years ahead. Hooiveld leaving in the summer, Fonte leaving in a year or two.

Would be purrfect!

Tancredi Palmeri ‏@tancredipalmeri 14m

According to Sky, Napoli could bid some 12m € for Astori, but the player said that his priority would be Southampton if they resume their bid

Outstanding player that would walk into any non top 4 side in the Prem. Big signing if it comes off, and possibly at a "reduced" price (10m as opposed to Napoli's 12m due to pre agreement with Astori that he helps keep Cagliari in Serie A).

God it would be nice to sign someone early this summer (esp a CB), if/ when we ensure we are safe from relegation of course.

Let's just concentrate on staying up first

Not really sure that transfer committee's attention being temporarily focused upon sorting out a transfer contingent upon staying up will affect the team's preparations for upcoming matches in any way. As such, you wouldn't want to miss out on good-value talent. I see no problem with going for this now. For me, we're a top centre-back, full-back cover and possibly two versatile attackers away from a complete squad.

Yes, but early planning is never a bad thing, and a lack of it often gets slated so if we are trying to line up some early deals then good.

If we had Yoshida, Ramirez, Boruc in by July we would probably have another 4 or 5 points now.

Good to see we are maybe learning from mistakes.

It´s always possible to make a deal and IF it´s true that the agent contacted us we´re in a pretty good position to make a good deal I think.

And you can always include a relegation clause if that´s the issue and still make the deal soon....

I think that type of clause is in Norwich´s deal with Ricky van Wolfswinkle.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2300181/Davide-Astori-Italy-10m-summer-transfer-target-Southampton.html

Southampton have revived interest in Italy defender Davide Astori and hope to complete a £10million summer deal.

Chairman Nicola Cortese is ready to back manager Mauricio Pochettino with a substantial summer budget once Premier League survival is assured.

Cortese was keen on 26-year-old Cagliari centre-back Astori joining in January and will face competition again from Napoli and Spartak Moscow. However, the player wants to come to England and Southampton's ambition appeals.

Southampton will also look to resist offers from Chelsea and Arsenal for left-back Luke Shaw.

My main question' date=' if we do sign him, would be 'how much say did Pochettino have in this transfer?". I know we have our committee but we still need players that the manager wants.[/quote']

It hasn't stopped us before.

When it´s players of that quality I wouldn´t bother too much. It´s different though when players are not of that type of quality.
