Davide Astori Southampton target?

Milan probably don't even want him, they're after a bloke from Udinese but they're probably just in cohorts with Cagliari and the agent. We showed ourself vunerable over the Ramirez affair, leaked, done deal, not so much and more money this way if you please Signor cos your fans are getting arsey. The Modus Operandii looks very similar.

Well I can't see this one being sorted any time soon but if I attempted to summarise the last few weeks of activity with Saints glasses on I would say:

1. Cagliari are in financial trouble and seem forced to sell their most valuable asset (Astori)

2. Saints, Liverpool, Napoli, and AC Milan are credited with serious interest

3. Napoli's interest was born out of having two defenders suspended for 6 months - although in the meantime they have signed a winger on loan from Udinese.

3. Liverpool's interest appeared to be at a value far lower than Cagliari wish to sell for regardless of their financial state

4. AC Milan would like the player but they have financial problems themselves - much of their activity will depend on selling Robinho (deal fell through) and Abate (in talks with Zenit)

5. Saints are credited with having made a bid that Cagliari haven't rejected out of hand and also that Astori has agreed personal terms.

So from a Saints perspective we must feel confident that neither Napoli or AC Milan will be in a position to bid more than our initial bid, hopefully leaving us in a position in a few weeks to be the only serious bidder about and chance to get the player for less than Cagliari are demanding right now?

The risk is of course that Napoli and / or AC Milan do make a bid better than ours and that in the meantime we do not pick up points in the league that Astori may otherwise help us if we stumped up the extra cash.

I am all for playing the long game but would be interesting to see how long Saints are going to hold out for on this one. Although perhaps if I was being negative after Villa we've got Chelsea, Everton, and then Man Utd before the transfer window closes and whether Astori would make a real difference in those fixtures could be debatable.

Fair enough I didn't know when he had gone there. I can read perfectly well. We aren't all glued to this thread like you.

You have 30 posts in this thread, this is my second. Gain a greater sense of the context to which your post applies before posting, your contributions will likely be far more useful.

Seems a fair summary. IMO the fee/haggling is the issue not the supposed interest from others. As Dan said Napoli have signed another CB and Milan know all about Astori and could have set a deal up before.

Nixon tonight saying we are in for another foreign CB. Older type apparantly. Would imagine we are after two tbh.

@reluctantnicko @Zoggers87 Is this new CB target an improvement on what we have?

Why are you concerned about him not seeing him play?

For the money we are reported to be bidding for Astori I think we could probably sign Douglas and have a few million left to put towards a GK or other position.

I read somewhere that Douglas is out of contract in the summer. I'd assume we could get him for peanuts plus bring in Astori.

Out of interest where would we stand on Martin viz a viz the EPL 25 man squad rule ? He's not in the original one, could we add him now as we're in a TW. Not suggesting playing him but we might need him on the bench.

He might be under the age needed to register someone so could be included that way.

Transfer window is open so registration window is open and we can put him back in the squad (and take him out again if he's loaned out again though if he plays for us it gets a bit murky with the 2 clubs per-season rule).

Also only players over 21 (on the start of the season I think) have to be registered, Martin is 23 so needs to be registered though.

Thursday afternoon. Perhaps we'll play Cork as centre back v Villa...

Hope not. We need to avoid ****ing around too much.

I'd rather have Jos, with Cork in midfield. That'll help us massively in ball retention, and protecting the back 4.

Jos played okay the other week anyway when we have Yoshi at RB.

Depends if Clyne and Gaston are fit really though doesn't it. If the news on those 2 isn't good we could go to Villa with a really makeshift side. Still we'll see later when the prematch is up on Player.

According to tuttocalciomercato Claudio Vigorelli which is astori agent i think is in england,to discuss a important offer from southampton, but says he would prefer a move to milan but there is offer on the table of milan yet.

Need the Don to do a cracking sales job, and Gaston to phone him and and tell him (again) about the English vag.

Sell the dream boys, sell the dream.....
