Hardly on here anymore so I don't keep track of things like this. Last I heard the Italian press were saying he'd signed a contract with us.

Medical i guess?

Maybe, but this was about 3 or 4 days ago now I think. They were probably just getting ahead of themselves - doubt we've even agreed upon a fee with his club.

Who are they??

Certainly no words from the club out so who are they??

we certainly have not, there are 3 known (in theory) bidders and they're all way off the ante if you believe the Italian Press.

Because Cagliari have always set Serie A alight!!

Weer Ok in the mid 70s - lived in Cagliari for a couple of years as a kid and went a couple of times with the old man - They had Cousio (?) Italian international then... but memory is hazy as was only 7/8 at the time....

I saw a few quotes on this thread from Italian journalists or some such saying that the deal was as good as done.

They are just smarting because their prize asset is not going somewhere perceived as a 'massive step up' from them. Makes it easier to swallow when players go to bigger and better things.

It would be like if we sold lallana to Wigan

Saints have an agreement with Astori. 3yr deal worth €2m net per season. Likely to be a contract termination clause in the event of relegation included (similar to that in Ramirez's contract). Now we have to find an agreement with Cagliari. We offer £8m (or €10m).

Not much we don't know, other than there is now a contract term and wages per season.

You said exactly the same about the Ramirez deal, almost word for word.
At least I'm consistent! Hopefully the same outcome too! Think this is more crucial than the Ramirez deal, though.

Contract termination?!

I'd understand letting them go at a cut price if we went down but releasing them?!

I don't know much about this fella. I'd just like us to sign him: so I can taunt some Liverpool fans that they couldn't compete with us in the transfer market for Ramirez or Astori.

I am not 100% on it but it says something like Saints have guaranteed a relegation clause in the contract which entitles it to be terminated for the same amount as the cost of acquisition. Who has to pay, Astori or Saints I am unsure! Checking with an Italian friend now.

The contract termination clause is a new one for me. I did not know for certain that it existed for ramirez but apparently the same deal is being offered for astori.

It sounds to me that there is a relegation clause which allows us to cancel the contract and sell him for what we paid if we get relegated, but is it? And why is that so good? The Italian paper regards that as an "ingenious" clause but i don't really understand whats so ingenious about it. If we go down Astori and Ramirez are unlikely to want to play ccc football, so i am assuming that this ingenious clause is nothing more or less than the same thing that Demba Ba had- ie if we get a bid equal to what we paid for those players then that triggers an access clause so they are allowed to talk to the other club. Is that anybody else's translation / understanding of the last part?

So basically Ramirez and Astori have/would have a release clause in the event of relegation meaning we would let them go if we get our money back. Sounds fair enough.

Imagine thats standard, but a good idea and helps to entice the player.

Posted
Interesting. Think that's the same kind of clause Demba Ba had at West Ham, hence him leaving WHU for free.

Apart from he left for free. This would be a min fee clause that says if someone offers what we paid then we will sell.

The wages obviously help but we seem to be able to attract good players!

Not to sound pedantic but it's slightly less than 40k a week in euros. Not sure of exchange rate but probably closer to 30k. It's a lot, if true, but not in comparison to some.

I was working it out before tax. Meant its actually about €48k a week

Especially when you consider Beatts was on that back in 2003 with all the add ons and bonuses...

Incidentally this would double or possibly treble his current wage, he is on $1m per year at Cagliari - not sure if that is net or gross though, if its gross our $2m net deal would be a 300% increase. For three years. What's not to like? If someone came up to you and said - go play football in England for 3 years and we will treble your money, guaranteed, would you say- but are you Liverpool? You'd say, where do i sign. Nobody is going to pay him that in Italy right now, but if Liverpool match our offer its a different matter. Wages surely not a problem and surely £9.5m isnt a problem either given what they spent on Sturridge...all to play for, and of course there's the ruskies.....its not over by a long way, but if we get him, like Ramirez, he ain't a benchwarmer, has to start, along with Coutinho of course :-)

Perhaps he might be keen to play for one of the world's most famous clubs? (Or failing that, Liverpool) arf

Should not underestimate the value to the player of a regular starting place - even if the long term its only as a shop window for bigger clubs and better deals - as long as we get good value from the player and a decent sellling price, its not a bad thing, although would like to think eventually that we have the chance to hold out longer as we flirt with sucess ;)

Live Exchange rate is 0.81 Pounds to the Euro or 1.22 the other way round.

We use this at work to check

Southampton are expected to announce the signing of Cagliari centre-back Davide Astori imminently, Goal.com understands.

Wouldn't expect they know anything, they just copy what everyone else says then put their own twist on it. Don't have any of their own sources.

I would imagine the relegation clause would allow us to re-coup our money laid out,but the players wage would probably half as no doubt they have a clause to take a 50% cut if relegated ,if nobody took the bait and came in for them that would leave us with a ridiculous team for the championship, and with receiving parachute payments that may subsidise the wages?

Sounds like a good bit of news, but I'd wait for somewhere more credible than goal.com to report it before getting too excited.

Goal have a lot of ex-BBC journos on their books. The BBC never break news unless they're certain, so hopefully they've taken that tradition with them...
