Davide Astori Southampton target?

...what concerns me is that we may feel obliged to find a €10 million defender a regular slot, sooner rather than later. But the Fonte / Yoshida partnership is getting better with every game and I think it would be detrimental to break it up for any reason other than injury or a dramatic loss of form. Would someone like Astori be prepared to sit on the bench long term?

 Oh dear, what a difference a day makes

will he want to join after watching that performance?...

I dunno, you'd hope as a player he'd be motivated and confident in himself to make a huge impact and huge improvement. But to be honest, even If he was out there I doubt the score would have been too much different. Our midfield just couldn't get close to them, and that was down to their class and poise with the ball.

Here's a idea.

If we really want the manager to manage the team and make it a big success, then why don't we ask him who he wants for a change, rather than getting yet another player in from the Italian game who our Chairman happens to have heard of/fancy?

I'll give it a few days for you to broach the subject with Nicola ......... perhaps you'd let us know his response ?

Liverpool have made an offer of £7million for Italy international Davide Astori but are likely to miss out to Southampton.

In demand: Davide Astori is highly rated

The 25-year-old defender is valued at £12m by his club Cagliari and Southampton have offered £9.5m and hope to strike a deal, with the Saints in particular need of defensive reinforcements after conceding 37 goals in the first half of the Premier League season.

Astori has been capped twice at international level, and was among the Italy squad who were beaten by England in the early season friendly in Switzerland.

He was also a late consideration for Cesare Prandelli’s Euro 2012 when there were doubts over the fitness of Andrea Barzagli.

Probs no new info really. Just need to get this over the line ASAP with other teams keen.

Does sound like a real coup if we can do it.

The Buzz seems to be that we are in pole position. Had this speculation been there before the Ramirez thing I wouldn't have had any faith in it, now though..... this odd feeling of belief.

That Liverpool story is either

a) worrying if true because most players would pick Liverpool over Saints, and he could hold out until the end of the window to get the move to the club he wants

or

b) great news because it is could be a retread of all the "Spurs are interested, honest they are" guff that Bologna/Gaston's agent/whoever stirred up in their hamfisted negotiations with The Don, meaning we are the only game in town after all.

What seems true to me is this is "real", ie it is more than just speculation. Could be coming to us, but who knows.

Source?

My source suggests only we have bid.

According to the French football press (who probably got it from the Italian press).

Liverpool have bid 8.5 million €s and have been knocked back, we have bid 12 million €s and have also been knocked back.

Cagliari want 15 million € but as they seem to have engendered the dutch auction that they wanted they'll take whatever they can get in about 10 day because they'll desperately need to spend before long or go down.

Is there an Italian club that isn't in the midst of a financial crisis? Even Milan are struggling, their team isn't a patch on what it was a few years ago.

Whole country is struggling financially, and people are bored of Serie A. Doesn't have the same pull as Prem or La Liga.

So, no, not particularly. They are all certainly a few steps behind the spending power of English & Spanish clubs these days.

Gut feeling is we won't get him. Surely Liverpool will offer more money both in contract and fee? Or is Cortese promising a new manager (half joking)?

L'pool aren't the financial powerhouse they once were. We priced them out of Gaston, they also baulked at paying £6m for Dempsey.

I think that £12m on Sturridge will prevent them from spending that again anytime soon, or at least until they shift some more of King Kenny's deadwood.
