See my earlier post about the meeting at La Lupa's and Luca Brasi on the door.Knew it.

What's Italian for "In the know" ?

Difference between Saints and Cagliari is €2m (£1.6m approx). Clubs still working on agreement, especially since Astori has already agreed personal terms with Cortese.

From what I am reading into the Italian reports, provisionally Cagliari agreed €10m, but now say they want €12m.

From a Serie A analyst on Twitter. Seems this could be an extremely good signing (if it happens) going by all the reports!

@jackrathborn: Southampton in for Cagliari's Davide Astori, some smart scouts at that club, big upgrade on what they have #Saints

@jackrathborn: @KristianSFCoake he's excellent, former Milan youth product, and should've returned to them last summer. Would walk into their XI now.

Not going to complain about having 3 quality CBs, but it's a weird position to cover, bit like a back up keeper, you might be a decent player, but you can go a whole season with hardly any game time, as opposed to a back up forward who will get chucked on most weeks for 15/20mins or a midfielder that'll often get brought on to help close a game off.

Agree with this 100 percent.

Despite the club showing that they are prepared to bench our big money signings when appropriate, what concerns me is that we may feel obliged to find a €10 million defender a regular slot, sooner rather than later. But the Fonte / Yoshida partnership is getting better with every game and I think it would be detrimental to break it up for any reason other than injury or a dramatic loss of form. Would someone like Astori be prepared to sit on the bench long term?

Another post from the fella itchen_dan mentioned above:-

@jackrathborn: I've watched every minute he's played since start of last season. Quality centre back, has ability on the ball, very classy.

this is the guy that is a Serie A analyist i think, so knows his stuff.

According to this there is no suspension and it must be pretty up-to-date due to the discussion on the right hand side regarding his potential move here. Who knows? Might hear more after their game tomorrow.

Further down the page it does say he's suspended from 22.12.2012 until 06.01.2013. One game suspension for two yellows against Juventus in their last match.

Wonder who he would eventually displace? Sounds like a better version of Jos.

Lol, incomparible to Jos! He is way better than either Jose or Yoshida, will walk into most top 6 sides from what I've seen. Huge signing. Personally I'd play him with Yoshida but it's up to Nige and what he sees in training. Mental us signing a player of this class!
