pressingon Posted 28 December, 2012 Share Posted 28 December, 2012 Premiership Goalkeepers Given the amount of criticism leveled at Kelvin on here I wonder if anyone else watched MOTD on Boxing Day ; 1. David de Gea palmed the ball straight to Perch for first Newcastle goal (cost around 17 million, captain of Spain U21, in and out of side due to a number of gaffs) 2. Joe Hart not for the first time beaten near post by weak shot from outside the box (undisputed No 1 keeper for England and Premiership Champions) 3. Robert Green not sure how to adequately describe his comical own goal for QPR (established premiership and former England Keeper) I think the forum would have been in meltdown if any of ours had done any of the above. Appy Posted 28 December, 2012 Share Posted 28 December, 2012 I wouldn't want Joe Hart.
sadoldgit Posted 28 December, 2012 Share Posted 28 December, 2012 It is easy to focus on our mistakes but look at the goals United concede andthe poor way they defend. We are not alone. I agree, I don't think Joe Hart is that good either.
SB Posted 28 December, 2012 Share Posted 28 December, 2012 Therefore just showing how the keeper situation is at Southampton as I'd take all of the names above over Kelvin.

So would any sane person those 3 are all international keepers. The point was I think the general standard of keeping seems quite poor these days. Hardly anyone catches the ball preferring to punch or palm away. Maybe it's the coaching, maybe the ball which they all claim moves all over the place... I do agree the balls are lighter but IMHO some of the mistakes our keepers make are not a result of a lighter swerving ball.
buctootim Posted 28 December, 2012 Share Posted 28 December, 2012 All keepers make mistakes and all make fantastic saves. Our problem is the ratio between the two. Much as i like KD I dont think he is PL quality.
Brussels Saint Posted 28 December, 2012 Share Posted 28 December, 2012 Gazza actually reminds me of David de Gea a lot. They seem similar in their goalkeeping style and both have the same weaknesses. de Gea obviously plays more and has a better defence in front of him, but I'm not sure actually how much better he is than Gazza. studentsaint Posted 28 December, 2012 Share Posted 28 December, 2012 I don't take any heart in the fact that other goalkeepers are making blunders. Ours need to stop. Keepers aren't helping us out and gifting us goals but we've given away too many this year.

It was introduced just before a World Cup....but the Germans had been using it in Bundesliga during the previous season ? ..(which sounded quite unfair).....talk about moving the goal posts !!! I never was a genius at Physics, but apart from players' kicking the ball in a particular manner (ala Beckham)....would the trajectory of the ball also be erratic in different climatic conditions?......harder pitches...in freezing winter weather....torrential rain....etc ....or.. ? If it makes a difference in cricket ... what about football matches? Anyone got a " layman's answer " that we can easily understand ?... ! How is Boruc more experienced than KD? 295 apps cf 560 for KD, and half of Boruc's apps were for Celtic in the Noddy League. That said I would rather he played than KD who makes me nervous every time the ball gets near him, and whose kicking is woeful.

Although SPL isn't be comparable with PL, there were a few good teams there and Boruc did well, when it was needed, against the best sides. Boruc has quite a few caps for Poland (but is out of favour with their present coach). His performances in Italy were well received and he had a lot of clean sheets, too I think KD still has a few games in him, but longer term there is no way (at present) that I'd choose Gazzaniga before Boruc ! ''RE: Kicking .....it certainly wasn't on Boxing day. The TV commentators also commented that several of his kick-outs went direct to a Saints player in space. Quite impressive. OldNick Posted 29 December, 2012 Share Posted 29 December, 2012 You aren't really comparing KD to Hart/de Gea, are you? *facepalm* Not to hart, who is the best keeper in the world at present. No doubt there are fans who are asking for City to get someone in instead of him, as for De gea he hardly inspires. Saturday Swartzer was given the plaudits but he nearly made a massive mistake, but of course only our keeper makes the mistakes in the PL.
