Depends on how much you want to spend, for a 42" 3D TV with freeview HD you cant go wrong with the LG 3D TV from Richer Sounds for £499 with an extra £50 for a five year guarantee. If you do not want Freeview HD if you have sky its £399 + £40 for the guarantee.

I've just been in PC World. They had Samsung 43 inch plasma ( not 3D ) for £300 and 32 LEDs going for the same price. I have the 32 inch version. Excellent "little" telly. We've got a plasma in the living room. Nice main TVs, but they can be pricier to run.

Have the Samsung, 46" 8000 series - brilliant telly. Previously had a 37" Panasonic plasma, and there is simply no comparison. Also there is almost no difference in size between the two. If you havent got a surround system ( or, if like me, the missus won't have "all those speakers cluttering up the room") get a sound bar, (Yamaha in my case)

Richer sounds had some good deals, they gave us a 5 yr warranty, a free blue ray player and samsung threw in a galaxy tab 2.0.

cheers, any opinions on these samsung smart tellies?

Don't know about the smart tellies specifically, but couldn't be happier with the Samsung LED I picked up last year.

Took the bugger on holiday with me ( log cabin telly was minuscule ). Biggest surprise is how much modern tellies can do. After faffing about with loads of different media player options in the past, I can just plug a USB hard drive into the telly. Plays everything I've thrown at it ( divx, avi, mp4, mkv ).
