aintforever Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Clyne injured? Remirez saved for Arsenal? Not sure it's worth saving players for a game where we are most likely going to get stuffed.
MOSaint Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Perhaps Ramirez suffered a knock and hasn't recovered to an extent where he can play 90 minutes.
SB Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Not sure it's worth saving players for a game where we are most likely going to get stuffed. I'd say we're most compared as a poor mans Arsenal therefore on our day we'd more likely beat Arsenal at home to Stoke away. Regardless of this weird selection
VectisSaint Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Why shouldn't we expect anything today. They're Stoke, not Barcelona. Might be something to do with the 4 goals conceded all season at home. I guess we could expect a 0-0, but then we don't keep a clean sheet too often.
Wade Garrett Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Maybe Gaston was one of the players that got a knock on Boxing Day. That line-up surely has to be a 3-5-2. Shaw and Cork wing backs, Morgan anchoring and Jay and Rickie up front. If the lineup has been dictated by injuries and knocks, then, on reflection, that wouldn't be a bad idea. If we go 4-4-2 with those players then it could well be a disaster. F*cked if I know.
madruss Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Perhaps Ramirez suffered a knock and hasn't recovered to an extent where he can play 90 minutes. This seems most likely. Adkins did say a couple had taken knocks on Wednesday. I expect they were Clyne and Gaston, with the former not fit for the bench. Still doesn't explain why FR is not playing at right back today

To write this game off though is ridiculous.
obelisk Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 I'd hope the players put up more of a fight than some on here. Stoke away will be tough but surely not completely beyond us.
Weston Saint Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Would have preferred Richardson to Yoshida at Right Back but let us not forget Richardson is not match fit. On that basis I think it is a good call by Adkins. This is not the sort of game for Ramirez. I am sure he will feature at some stage. Perhaps he has a injury niggle! Awful lot of negativity on here before the game has even started!!!!
monosaint Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 For me there is logic in his team selection. He has to deal with the big hoof up front by Stoke. Playing 3 CBs makes sense and we know that Yoshida can play full back if needed. Guly gives us workrate in midfield and we need 2 up front to occupy their defence. I can see what NA is doing. He will of course be slated if it doesn't work. We shall see.
egg Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 With the exception of no obvious right back that's a decent line up. They'll be a handful at set pieces and we need height and power to compete. The two up top will give them something to think about. I think we'll line up in a proper 442 and be more competitive than most on here think.
Bad Wolf Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 If he wanted height and power wouldn't it have made sense to play Fox instead of Shaw? Shaw's quite small isn't he? Could also do with Fox's set pieces here but then again, Shaw is awesome!
Roger Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Ramirez got kicked from pillar to post vs Fulham by riise so think its more that he has niggle.

I hope you're right, but I think we do have a chance of getting at the middle of their back row with that line-up.
saints-cris Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Have no problem with rotating the team over the Christmas period. I do however have a problem with playing square pegs in round holes when we have perfectly good players who can step in. Richardson was great last season and seems a far more logical choice at Right back for me. If Yoshida (who has been great IMO) has a stinker at Right Back, I'll be annoyed.

Agreed, I think people should be given an IQ test before being allowed to post on here.. some of these posts are moronic to say the least. Ramirez actually limped off when replaced at Fulham so suspect its better to only play him if we are desparate second half.
trousers Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 @officialsaints: Saints are without @Nathaniel_Clyne today after the defender picked up a knock on Boxing Day. #saintsfc

Could be that Richardson is on the bench to give us the option of switching to a flat back 4.

Could also do with Fox's set pieces here but then again, Shaw is awesome! Apart from being quicker and technically better than Fox, Shaw is quite stocky, strong and pretty good in the air for his size.
Huffton Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Theres a lot of pace on the bench. Maybe his thinking is keep it tight for 70 or so mins then bring the fast players on to have a pop at their tiring defence? I don't know, Nigel is certainly brave, if this goes tits up it could be his job
S-Clarke Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 if this goes tits up it could be his job I wouldn't have thought so.
Faz Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Let's all just calm down a bit.....let's see how the game pans out before throwing our toys out. I'm with you. Bed-wetters.
Crab Lungs Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 I think Adkins want to save Ramirez from being kicked off the park today...
dubai_phil Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 We all asked questions about how to line up for this game. NA makes changes everyone moans. Jeez has Alps had a pop yet? Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
L1Minus10 Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Yoshida at right back then... I would imagine Cork and Schneiderlin as usual in the midfield with a three of J-Rod left , Guly and Punch, SRL up front on his own...
CanadaSaint Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 I think Adkins want to save Ramirez from being kicked off the park today... Yep, this is not a Ramirez type of game and he's the sort of player they'd clatter hard and early.
CanadaSaint Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 One thing's for sure. Stoke's match preparation did not contemplate playing against anything like this kind of line up.
patred44 Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 One thing's for sure. Stoke's match preparation did not contemplate playing against anything like this kind of line up. I can only think he is putting Cork at right back and playing 3 centre backs.. bloody risky
SNSUN Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 I'm a glass half full fella, but on seeing our team, this is virtually a dead cert loss. Any result that isn't a Stoke win would be a massive result for us. Stoke looked fantastic against Liverpool, they'll be well up for this.
OldNick Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Playing 3 centre backs is all about countering the bombardment we will get today. A draw is the best i am hoping for
Matthew Le God Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 I can only think he is putting Cork at right back and playing 3 centre backs.. bloody risky Have you considered it is the same 4-2-3-1 formation as normal with Yoshida at right back?
Wade Garrett Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Playing 3 centre backs is all about countering the bombardment we will get today. A draw is the best i am hoping for I just hope they're playing as 3 centre-backs, and we aren't asking 1 of them to play RB.
Wade Garrett Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Have you considered it is the same 4-2-3-1 formation as normal with Yoshida at right back? Did you watch Yoshida in the home game v Fulham?
patred44 Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Have you considered it is the same 4-2-3-1 formation as normal with Yoshida at right back? in that case why Hooivelt ??? Richardson would be a better choice at right back leaving Yoshida to play in his normal position Yoshida has only played right back once, and it was a disaster
Suhari Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Glad J-Rod gets a start, but will not be happy if he is on the left. Seems mental to leave out Ramirez when J-Rod is there to offer more mobility in front of him. Think NA is trying to be too clever.
Matthew Le God Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 in that case why Hooivelt ??? Richardson would be a better choice at right back leaving Yoshida to play in his normal position If you mean Hooiveld and not Hooivelt, then it could be because at 6 foot 4 Adkins thinks he offers a counter to Stoke's aerial threat. Today's team has a lot of 6 foot plus players, which we might just need.
studentsaint Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Davis Yoshi fonte jos Shaw Punch Cork Schneiderlin guly J rod lambo Or same back 4 Guly cork Schneiderlin Punch lambo j rod Jos adds height vs crouch/Jones Attacking players to force the issue against a patched up stoke defence.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Glad J-Rod gets a start, but will not be happy if he is on the left. Seems mental to leave out Ramirez when J-Rod is there to offer more mobility in front of him. Think NA is trying to be too clever. Rodriguez will be leading the line.
JackFrost Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 I'd have Richardson playing at RB over Yoshida any day of the week, providing he's fit to play. Whenever I've seen Yoshida playing at RB he looks like a player playing out of position. I can understand the logic of hooiveld as Stoke are bound to hoof it into the box a lot but even with Clyne out and Ramirez apparently with a niggle, it's a strange team selection in places. I hope for Nigel's sake we get a decent performance today. . .
Wade Garrett Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Davis Fonte Jos. Yoshida Cork. Puncheon Morgan Guly Shaw Jay. Rickie
DT Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 KD in goal. Say no more. Surprised they didn't pick Crouch to start as he would definitely score.
CanadaSaint Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 Hey, even though I'm an optimistic kind of guy, I wasn't expecting any points from this fixture because our rather lightweight kind of game wouldn't count for much up there, so nothing has really changed. I just hope that, if we don't get anything, there's not a lot of Adkins-out criticism about the line-up, because some of it was forced and there's a good chance we would have done worse with the Fulham starters.
david in sweden Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 this is not the game to experiment..... ??..it's hardly experimenting...is it ? If both Clyne and Ramirez aren't fit enough to play.. .who would you put in ?
RobM Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 ??..it's hardly experimenting...is it ? If both Clyne and Ramirez aren't fit enough to play.. .who would you put in ? Richardson (RB for RB) and JRod up-front with Rickie. Guly left, Punch right, both swapping occasionally.
Wade Garrett Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 We can win this. HTH. You sound like Mike Summerbee in Escape To Victory. Stirring words.
Saint_clark Posted 29 December, 2012 Posted 29 December, 2012 If he wanted height and power wouldn't it have made sense to play Fox instead of Shaw? Shaw's quite small isn't he? Could also do with Fox's set pieces here but then again, Shaw is awesome! Shaw has got a great leap on him, wins his fair share of headers.
